Call me ticked! LOL and maybe stupid :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay I splurged $7 each for two Alocasia macrorrhiza tubers from Lowe's. I bought and planted them on 3/10. Last week the first leaf on one opened and looked like a plain old C. esculenta. I gave it a second chance. Second leaf unrolled, it was esculenta. The label said they were packaged by Jackson and Perkins. They wouldn't help me. I talked to the nursery manager at Lowe's and he said I could bring it back-two feet tall growing in an ice cream bowl. LOL So, I got my money back and rebought my own ear for $2. I knew they would pitch it. It wasn't what I wanted but hey I had about seven weeks invested. I have a leaf about to open (maybe it is, forgot to look) on the second one. What are the chances?? Thank goodness the Doc sent me a malanga-much better chance of it being the right plant. LOL It really bugs me when companies don't make sure plants are the right thing! I'm over it but thought you might like a laugh.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Shame on you!you should know ole Doc will set you up,You need an upright? No prob,I am holding off sending anything till after Iowa, then I have to get some out to the east coast,so hang in there.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Pssst, after Iowa you say? Okay, listen, I think Brugie already sent me one of everything she has but if you find a secret stash, hide them in your plant legs and swing through Ohio on the way home! Do not bend your legs!! LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL,I think I will need a Uhaul!I will be putting this big one in the ground and finding homes for these babies,so if this is the Alo you want,I have them.

Wow Root! It that the one that was in the greenhouse? Great looking babies.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Yep.This is my big girl,do you want your name on a baby?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

If the malanga is a mac, I won't need one. It has a nice big burgundy nub that is growing by the day. I'll have a leaf stalk any time. Looks like at least one baby off the side as well. :) On the other hand, if you have too many...lol. What else do I see there? A brug, ferns, persian shield?? What a shame you don't have plants. Giggle. Interested in any Leonitis? Probably the most 'different' thing I have at the moment.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey do you have a decent pic of the front of one of the little ones? I would like to see the leaf. Please?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I get you one(pic),I sent you(yautia/Malanga)http://davesgarden.com/fp.php?pid=459300,Not the same family,

Strange, when I went to edit,to say NOT the same family, the not was there

Good for you Badseed.......... I am glad you returned it!! I have had J & P send me the wrong amaryllis and they credited my account with a full refund for over $100 and never asked for them back.

Root, that stalk looks so huge for that size pot. You definitely have green thumbs............lol.........green hands.

I am so jealous of you all going to Brugies this weekend. I just know you will have the best time. She is the hostess with the mostest!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I just got done making Salsa,Kell,I'm excited!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Do me a favor Root....give her a hug and a kiss just from me........she has been a dear friend to me!

And send me some of that salsa....ASAP!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well I went and looked at the second one and I am thinking it is strike two. Other than the leaves shooting straight up, I also notice how predominant the veins are on yours. On the first one the leaf was straight up til it opened all the way then it hung down. The second one did the same. No thick veining either. Just looked at the first big leaf on the second tuber is doing the same thing. Woe is me. I'll only pay $1 for this one though! It is smaller. LOL If I wanted little esculentas I could have paid $6 for a bag of 6-8. Now I paid $7 for one single one but got five bucks back. Egads.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Is that one differant from the other baby my name was going to be on? If it is sure I would!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Nope, same ones, just smaller,The ones I have for shipping have set in pots for some time, they will have better root systems,Keep an eye here after round up,so I get a final head count, plant count.
We are all holding or breath for Malanga leaves,I think it is a soil tempature thing,Badseed, you don't have Malanga popping yet do you?I know John had one budding up,

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

No Problem to both of you! Will be good to meet you Kyle,I am leaving tomorrow,Bonnie,I will come to one of your southern RUs,I started getting fired up when I put the tent by the door,LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Kyle did you get storms tonight?I think Shirley shut down early,we had a tornado on the ground out by the airport,it was heading her way.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Root, and you are sleeping in a tent there tomorrow night?

Lufkin, TX

Badseed,
If you still have babies of this plant, I would like to get one. Just let me know what to send you. I have a trade list too but I don't have anything that big.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well I am sure there is a technical name for it, but I don't know it! ROTF Mine does have that itty bitty leaf thing they get right before shooting up a leaf stalk! Woo hoo! I guess it is about three inches out of the soil now.
Go on and laugh. I bought back my esculenta for a buck today. Mercy buy. :) We know they would have tossed it. So, I still don't have any uprights. Sigh
Cine, which is it you are wanting? I probably don't have it, but I will share if I do. Otherwise, maybe someone reading can share. :)

Badseed, Been there done that as they say, every time I look at one of my red gloriosa lily's that were to be yellow !! I get a little red.. finally did get some yellow one's , 7 tubers later!
I think we are running neck and neck on the Malanga.. LOL so that what that tiny little thing is , a preleaf : )
John

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I posted this on my Rootdoc post in Brugs too, but thought I would put it here as well. Here is my preleaf (Thanks Brugmania) along with the beginnings of a leaf stalk!

Here are my uprights. NOT!! LOL Okay, this is what a $1 and $2 C. esculenta look like. giggle. So I could not send them off to the great compost heap in the sky because I grew them for seven weeks. Sigh......I did get back the $14 I paid for uprights.

Badseed I feel so bad for this upright (mac) that got in the way of a new arbor :( it is still homeless!

That is a nice one John. If I didn't already have some, I'd sure jump on it. Much bigger than mine, but they will grow up one day too.

Lufkin, TX

The plant that looks like a huge elephant ear. I'm new to all these plants so I don't know the name. If anyone is willing to share some let me know please.
