Mine are doing well. The "mystery" MG's all germinated and are growing with amazing vigor (a little scary)!! Actually all of mine are doing pretty well. The one I am hoping for the best result from is the Ak. Umi. - I love that "sea" blue color I saw in the pictures, I am hoping to get it winding around a trellis. Love to hear how others are coming along.
Japanese MG Scavenger Hunt #1 How are they coming along?
mines doing well too! I got very many species from ssbar...and almost ll have germinated....and they grow very nicely........I transplanted them few days ago!
yes, some of those have really nice leaves...
Alyssum - I'm going to plant tomorrow and Tuesday night before I leave on vacation with strict instructions to my better natured half on keeping them alive. Ideally they'll be up and ready to transplant when I come home. I certainly don't know where I am going to plant everything, that's for sure. What a delightful dilemma!!
Well, I nicked and soaked overnight, and had 100% germination two days later! I waited until the 1st of May to start them, as there was no room under lights, and this will save hardening them off. More later... John
guess I'd better get mine started ,huh????
I woke up this morning to my first bloom!! It is the one from Lophophora's mystery MG found outside the Imperial Palace!! Anyone want to see it??
I would love to see it and what's the MG scavenger hunt anyway? :)
Alyssum, you have blooms already???!!! Wow! Photos please. When did you actually start them? Wondering how many days from germination until bloom. John
Flow, here is a link for you all about it:

Hopefully you will be able to join in on the next one!
Flowox: in the original "scavenger hunt" last fall, Sbarr visited Japan and with the help of Lophophora who lives there, they hunted down 13 varieties of unique Japanese MG seeds. It actually was quite an adventure -- and Loph. found the mystery MG seeds on a plant growing wild right outside the Imperial Palace - no one knows what it looks like. For that thread go to: http://davesgarden.com/t/363969/
Pardancanda: I planted them the 3rd week in March.
I will try to take pictures tomorrow morning.

Alyssum, that's good news, only about 6 weeks then... Last year I grew some that barely bloomed before the frost, which made saving seeds difficult. We should have fun trading seeds this winter from all our Japanese Moring Glories!
I missed out on this too :o(
but Sbarr was kind enough to send me a couple white moonflower seeds (thank you thank you thank you!!), and two of them germinated right away and are up and growing! The first leaves are gigantic!!, I am so excited and anxious to see how big the vine will get. I'm in for next year, for sure!!
well, I guess I'll have to wait until next year then :(
Thanks for explaining :)
Haven't started mine - and thankful that I didn't. Just returned from vacation tonight and almost everything I started this winter and spring is dead - better natured half isn't very skilled at keeping plants alive. I'll start everything tomorrow. I would have been devastated if I had lost these and on a hunch I didn't start them since they're too special.
Alyssum - can you post a picture of yours?
Oh Sandra, that is heartbreak! But there is still time for sowing beautiful flowers seeds. I'm behind in starting a lot of flower seeds this year, including the MG's! Seems like there is not enough hours in the day........
I'm looking forward to sharing pictures with everyone this summer!
Alyssum....I'm sittin on the edge of my chair! I wanna see the imperial palace mg!!!
I've lost my Imperial Palace ones and the moonflowers! they germanated, grew to about 3" high and the leaves started to get brown around the edges and finally died. The others I planted were from last year, and none look too well. One is about 8" high and its had 2 blossoms. A little miniature plant! Of course its tag came off! I don't know what went wrong. I used Schultz's planting medium. I'll try and germanate a few more and see what happens. Maybe I started the others too early. End of March.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh, Doris, sorry to hear about that. I'm sure the next batch will do well.
ALYSSUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....yoooooooooo hoooooooooooooooo. *nudge, poke, prod*
Hi -- sorry I was out of town. I am new to MG's, so I thought I could just wake up and take a picture the next day. However, it didn't bloom again the next day (I didn't know that the blooms only last a day). Then I left town. I will try to catch the next bloom I see right away.
I can tell you that the bloom was small - 1 1/2 inch and a deep blue with white center.
SORRY GUYS!!!
Sputtering with laughter - OMG - that made my afternoon. I love it. Alyssum - I have my fingers crossed for you. You'll be one of the first to post - I know it.
*sigh* - All of mine were just started last Thur and Fri, so I don't have anything to brag about yet. A few have broken ground.
Now I'm really excited about these Mystery Imperial Palace MG's. I'll post a thread and as we get pictures we can all start posting. I think we can torment MG haters with a LOT of threads!!
i planted mine mid april. im waiting patiently for my last frost date of may 31st to transplant them outside. i lost some but also have some nice hardy plants too. i kept having to pinch them back, or they would have reached the ceiling by now. well maybe not the ceiling......some of the leaves are really neat, almost like a marblized effect. time will tell how they do outside. i hope to keep a few in pots to bring to our northeast round up for those who didn't get in on the trade.
Hi debi - same here. Mine are all indoors in pots. Most of them have broken the soil. I started quite late but that has worked out well. I'm looking forward to being able to put them out and watch them zoom. It'll be fun to start seeing the pictures. Between the two co-ops we have almost 30 kinds to compare. :)
i just put my trays outside yesterday to start hardening them off. from ? seeds, i have 52 plants that have survived and are doing well. some are so so and we'll see if they make it. even with friends and going to the round up i don't know where i'm going to put all these morning glories. got to go buy some new fishing line. :-)
there is one that they are all still short, with no pinching. we'll see what they do outside. but not for another week or so.
debi z
there was two co-ops? Boy I really missed out by joining so late!. If anyone has any extra they would like to trade let me know. I am so green with envy!
Here is my trade list.

Take care,
Polar
Mine are doing great, the Imperial Palace has been blooming for about two weeks. #3, my own code, has had several blooms in the last week. They are the ones with white spokes and rims. Had dark purple and sky blue flowers. Love those marblized leaves some have, some very interesting shapes also. I promise to get digital camera hooked up as soon as school is out to post pictures.
Awesome Pam - we're counting on you for pictures!!! Mine are only on their second set of leaves - this is the tundra up here and I was also away at the beginning of the month.
help please!!!!!
the leaves on my morning glory seedlings are going yellow. these are the real leaves, not the originals, those have already died off a while back.
i have been hardening off the seedlings this 2 weeks. the changes have been:
1. they have not received a very diluted dose of miracle gro type fertilizer.
2. the last moisture they received was, from the bottom, with tap water. the soil becoming quite soggy.
3. the seedlngs are on the screen porch.
4. the weather has been rainy, cloudy and humid.
5. up until today they have not received any direct sunlight. previously they were getting 16 hours of fluorescent light.
i would hate to loose my seedlings now after babying them for 2 months. what do you think the problem is and how do i solve it.
thank you debi z
I'd be most concerned about the soggy soil... recommend letting it dry out some before watering. I wonder also if there was enough sun in one day to 'burn' the leaves. Did you also repot them? Mine are in peat pots, as I think they really resent root disturbance. Good luck! John
they have been outside now for a few days. yesterday was the first full day of sun, with intermittent clouds, that we have had in a loooooong time. the mg's were not in direct sun when they started to yellow.
i planted a few out and so far so good. we most certainly will see. :) for better or worse.
catlady - you and busybee are rays of hope and inspiration for the rest of us. *cough* I'm the laggard. Didn't start mine until I returned from my vacation in May. I WILL post a photo of my first bloom... with hope, it will be this year!
debi - I'm treating mine somewhat poorly intentionally - I doublecheck every few days, make sure they're not bone dry and water occasionally, resisting the urge to water them very often. The ignored ones seem happier than the pampered ones. Maybe you could dry them out and replace some of the wet soil with dry potting soil.
So far - only one definite casualty - I put two outside (one in hanging baskets - which turned out to be a mistake as the water from the eaves squashed them when it rained). Luckily these were a very common variety - the red picotee. The other, my favorite - I wanted to give a head start and enjoy the warm weather, but the past week has been very rainy - not ideal. Oh well - we'll do more of these and also lots of trading.
i have been trying to let them dry out. i now have planted most of them. i was hoping to bring some to the round up but that doesn't look like it will happen now. the extra's are being given away a.s.a.p. to get them in the ground. i wish i had kept some seeds now, rather than planting them all. oh well, live and learn. i'm hoping now that i'll get to see a bloom or two.
we are in the same area and the rain just seems to go on and on. some plants are complaining because they arn't getting enough sun and too much water. such is life in new england.
debi - best of luck. Plus - we can do another co-op, having learned from this batch. :) Mine is start earlier and don't go on vacation leaving plants to the care of people with brown thumbs. That's why I started mine so late, I was worried they'd die. And they would have. Looking forward to more pictures from everyone.
If anyone has any they would like to dump, I would be glad to take them and save seed, if you like. It is certaily hot and dry here ( we are afraid it might start being a drought this year).
I replanted some of mine after the first keeled over and the new ones are about an inch in height. After soaking a few days they came up in 3 days, so I am hoping these will turn out well. Perhaps by the time the weather decides to warm up, they will be a good size to plant. (low 50s all week)
