passiflora question

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

I planted two passifloras last summer, I think they were "incarnata" they are in a very protected area, but no sign of life yet. When might they break dormancy???
Thanks,
Becky

Tim would be the one to ask. You left yours outside all winter? I brought mine in the house and they grew through the whole winter months. Hope yours will do something soon for you :o) Good luck

That one is supposed to be hardy here. I never have left any of mine outside, but imagine the ground has to be warm before they will show, just like hardy hibiscus, mine don't peek through until ground is good and warm, usually in May sometime.

Becky, mine hasn't shown yet either. I keep tapping my foot, impatiently waiting LOL....

Hibiscus is right - the ground has to be very warm. In cold springs in NE Ohio, sometimes it doesn't even show until the first of July. Don't worry, it makes up for the late start by growing _very_ quickly.

Thanks everyone, I'll just keep waiting!!!!
Fingers and toes crossed!!!!

I have some incarnata seedlings and never thought of trying to overwinter them outside. I have several, so I will definately try it this year. I have a nice protected and very sunny spot that may help them pull through our New England winters.

My Incarnata came up a lot later than normal here too. In some shadier parts of the garden I'm still waiting on it. Don't give up, it's much too early after such a long and cold winter.

I have passiflora incense growing in my yard. It behaves like incarnata-going dorment for winter, sending out root runners in spring. It is a lovely vine and attracts fritillary butterflies as a host plant. It is hardy to zone 6. I have a few rooted cuttings to trade for other passiflora. The pic below is "Incense".
You might want to try passiflora caerulea(the Blue Passion Flower). If it keeps it's leaves all winter--which mine did--the spring bloom is beautiful! It can take some cold and keep leaves. We had several nights in the mid 20's, a few frosts, and lots of nights below freezing.
