The best meal, mmm. Desire for tasty food (relative term) is common in all of us. We all have come across one such unforgettable meal - a lunch or a dinner, at one point of time or other. Haven't we?
I had one in 1999. In fact, I had won that meal! There is a little story. Our office team had won the final of a cricket tournament. I was instrumental in helping our team win - and what a victory it was! It was a last-ball-win. Actually it was a tie but on account of having lost lesser no. of wickets we were declared winners. 3 runs were required to win from the last ball but we could run ony two. Two unforgettable runs! I was taking strike and was top-scorer in the end with 48. The organizers chose me as the 'man of the match'. They gave me a little trophy. Along with it, a letter was given. IT was from the sponsor, a popular 3-star hotel. It said that a free lunch was on offer as a prize for me and another person whom they allowed. I went about a fortnight later to the hotel with my DW and my kids. They were kind to allow the kids too. I never had dreamt that I was going to have such a magnificient meal. All the items tasted very well and went to my liking. Vegetarian (and teetotaller too), I am, by tradition, custom and nature! Such variety left me with no choice but to taste them all! What salads, what Ice creams and what not. It was the most sumptuous and delecious meal I had ever had till then and even till now. It was an absolute gastronomer's delight. And I was the gastronomer. That one hour of 'feeding' made me full to the brim. It was an unforgettable lunch. My DW too tasted a bit of my 'prize' and the kids were too choosy. They enjoyed seeing me 'eat' more than they themselves tasting those delicacies!! It was the best prize I had won, and what a way to enjoy the prize! (But the newspaper had erroneously reported that it was a prize for two for a night's stay at that hotel!)
Your best meal - remember it?
Oh, that sounds wonderful! What a nice part of your prize for winning the tournament. Meals at restaurants can truly be memorable -- for good or ill -- and I'm glad yours was such a treat!
My mother was a wonderful cook and I can truly say that each meal she prepared was a delight. The best restaurant repast I ever had was a Christmas buffet at a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado -- I, too, am a vegetarian, and was delighted to find so many delicious options that I couldn't even sample them all.
Dinu..............come to Texas my friend, and we will give you a spread like none other you have ever seen!!

Mexican tortilla food is very good...but not sure is it the best one. and my dad made some hot, spicy Chinese food...I loved that. and my grandmas meatballs and other meat food is delicious! I cant choice...
I too have enjoyed some scrumptoius meals over the years but my most unforgetable was nothing fancy or elaborate. I had been struggling to make ends meer and there was no food left in the house or money to buy any. I am sure there were charities about that could have assisted me but I did not know of them. The children, I had two at the time, I had asked a friend to babysit for the day so I could look for a job. I knew they would be fed there so I started out on foot looking for a job going door to door in the business sector and retail stores. I had an interview at 4:30 that afternoon and spent the entire morning looking for other leads and my stomach was growling in hunger. At about 2 that afternoon I passed a hotdog vendor who was getting ready to go home for the day. He had 2 hot sogs left on the cart and a sign saying FREE above them as he was packing things up. I sheepishly took one and quickly mumbled an embarrassed thankyou as I walked away and sat down on a bench to eat my good fortune. That was the best tasting meal I have ever had! My fortunes have changed since then but Hot Dogs still taste like a special treat that remind me how fortunate I am to have food and shelter.
By the way, I got the job :~)
Oh, one of my favorite topics! I'm kind of a 'foodie', one of the new words to me lately. I love to cook and most of all I like nothing better than to eat wonderfully prepared food!! A memorial experience, we arrived at the restaurant and were immediately greeted at the entrance and gently whisked in to confirm our reservation. No waiting. Quietly sat at our table and the candles, atmosphere and soft music were fantastic. Husband and I look at each other and kind of giggle at the extravagance of the place. So we begin to peruse the menu...foie gras? *(yes yes yes), this is something I had wanted to try for so long! I ordered lamb chops, a type of polenta dish, but it was elegant with additions I would hate to refer to it as plain ol' polenta, and haricot verts. .and here comes the wine (oh who is that guy? the guy who only knows wine with the menu for the restaurant??) Sorry... anyway, I'll call him the wine guy for now...he asks us if he could make some suggestions for us? (Kind of a wow for us!) and we say yes, please do. Now, I'm not versed in wine (would like to learn someday), and whatever this guy suggested tasted just right with dinner. The food presentation was overwhelming and outright awesome. The waitstaff was over and beyond. Overall, the service was exceptional, the food was fantastic and we left feeling like a King and Queen.
Not to mention, the valet brought us our car. A great night!
Hmmm...probably my favorite Thai restaruant here in Atlanta. The Tamarind. I had a salad with duck in it, Masaman Curry for my meal, and fried bananas with honey and coconut ice cream for desert. Beautiful restaraunt. Not too expensive ($35 for two on average). And WONDERFUL service. They even put your napkin on your lap for you! :)
I'm getting hungry. My all time favorite meal is paella, second to that was my Grandmother's Spanish Chicken and Rice.
Speaking of good cooks with a terrific culinary skill, my grandma was one of the highest order! And I can still remember those days when she used to prepare food all by herselves and we were about 8 in the family. She used to win prizes for her skills in some competetions as well. Even now, those who have tasted food from her deft hands recall those days. She never used the balance or the spoon for measurements. Her feel of the material was with the palm and depended on judgement of the eye for quantity and I can tell you, the results were nearly flawless. That was an astounding knack. It was always a delight to eat food prepared by her day in and day out.
Zany, your hot dog story is pretty interesting. Sometimes it is nice to look back on such moving incidents.
After almost six years, there may be some more members who can share something here?
Zany's story made me cry and the vendor never knew how he'd saved someone's day that it is remembered today.
I'm glad you're bringing up these old threads, Dinu. Nice to see what some of us have missed.
My most memorable meal was my wedding breakfast. Six of us in a really bad restaurant but my mother was still alive, my brother was sober, I was still in my put-together-for-the-event dress and I had just gotten married to my best friend. We were there for 4 hours and I do NOT remember what I ate. I remember the love.

I just entered that in my blog last night, with some rewritten text. Probably it reads better in the blog than my first post up here on this thread.
If you have time, read my other posts as well there in the link given above.
kwanjin,
Thanks for sharing your little but memorable experience.
