New Pond in Progress.... Take a look

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

Hi all

We have finally started our new pond. It is going to be 45'x10' and 2' deep. We are building it 1/2 in ground and 1/2 out of ground. It is going to house our new victoria if I am lucky. We are getting our backhoe to do all the digging work for us. Then we will just have to go in and touch it up. All around the pond is a hill that will be planted with our banana's and other tropicals. Will keep them all in huge pots buried in the ground so we can just pull them up and put in greenhouse over winter. We are going to install a massive hoopframe over the pond during the winter to give some plants a headstart in the spring. But anyways, I needed a new pond. My other 4 have really filled up and no room for anything else. Just can't wait until this fall when I have to build a new one to house all the new plants I get this summer. HA HA. Will this illness never end?

goodness, it might have too! you're going to run out of land!! Can't wait to see it when you have it finished and landscaped.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Are the landscape ties the bottom of the pond?

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

Nope, the lanscape timbers are not the bottom of pond. I am digging 1 foot deeper to provide no freezing area to store plants during winter. We have now placed all the landscape timbers up and starting to dig tomorrow. Hopefully will have it finished on Sunday or Monday.

This is the second stage of the new pond. We got our backhoe in and dug out as much dirt as possible. Now it is all work by hand. We left about 1 foot on the sides so we can take a shovel and bevel it down and make sure it is smooth. The bottom was dug as close to 2 foot as possible. We will have to dig and level it some more, but not that much.

Steve, looks great, and it is large. Are you lining it will the pond liner material. Should be beautiful when you get it all finished and planted. Donna

Hi Donna,

Yes we are lining it with 45 mil firestone pondsafe liner. Also installing a biological filter to help with the cleaning of it. We have some butterfly Koi that should look great in it.

Hi. A Victoria is the largest waterlily of them all. IT has leaves up to 10 foot wide and blooms over 1 foot wide. It is also a night bloomer and the blooms smells like crushed pineapple. Very highly scented.

Might have run into a problem with new pond. Old man that lives next door has called the city and anyone else he can to try to stop our progress. I do not understand how somepeople can be just hateful. But that is the type of person he is. He use to work for the city and thinks he can control everyone. Will have to wait and see what the city say's.

I called the city before starting the project. Spoke with some man and he said it was fine to install a pond this size. No fence needed or anything. But he didn't mention permits or any other thing. Guess i will have to call them tomorrow again and question all that. Sure will hate to have to fill it in.

Oh wow..... leaves 10' wide? That is fantastic, and what a great place to sit in summer evenings with the fragrance.......

I'm rooting for you about the neighbor problem! I never understood why anyone cares what someone does on their own side of the fence....sigh.........keep us posted!

Off to google to find photos of a Victoria!

oh man, I sure hope they don't stop you now! keep us uptodate!!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Steve, I hope your troublesome neighbor doesn't cause you to have to fill in your pond. Here you don't have to get a permit if your pond is no deeper than 36" so mine is 30"l Good Luck, Donna

Hi all. So far so good. no word from the city. Going on with progress in the morning. Been in Memphis all day helping my friend that has breast cancer do some yard work. But tomorrow is dedicated to trying to finish the pond.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

It's looking great. Need to get my hands on one of those lilies myself. Hope the busybody next door doesn't hinder all that fine progress. We're all "rooting" for you!

So far everything is now going as planned. Liner will be put in this afternoon. Will take a pic later and post.

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

New update. I am in the process of filling it up with water now. Had a friend come over and help up put that massive heavy liner in. Had the water running all afternoon and it seems like it has not even begun to fill. LOL. Guess this will be a several day process.

Steve what size stock tank did you get for your pond? 150 or 300 gal? I am going to do the same on our pond.
The Victoria seed I think I will try. If full grown they wont fit our ponds LOL.

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

I used the 150 gallon. But probably should have used the 300. I will add another 150 on if that isn't enough. But as much waterflow as I have going through the filter should be ample.

I will post a pic in the next few days of the finished product. The filter was very easy to build. Very powerful also. I have to do some adjusting of some pipes due to leaking before I get it up and running 100 percent. I did test it out and boy it was really nice.
