variegated willow

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

is there anybody who grows this shrub successfully in zone 5b. i'm right on the edge of 5b and 6a. i would like to plant this in my side yard as a natural fence. what are your opinions here on this. so it would get wind, snow, rain, morning sun and mid afternoon and on shade. what do you think? how far apart would you plant them? they are such a beautiful shrub and it would look gorgeous all lined up like that.
i'll await your suggestions and recommendations.

I am in zone 6 and they do fine here. I am presently rooting some cuttings and if you want a couple of them when they root you can email me and we can work it out.

I would assume that they would do well in your zone also. I still don't see any roots but last year it took quite a long time for them to appear.

I finally found the name of the variegated willow that I am sprouting. It is Salix Integra "Hakura Nishiki" and will grow to 6 feet tall by about 8 feet across.

Chaplin, CT(Zone 5b)

deb z, I have a nishiki, just planted it this year, so far so good. There is a nursey in Windham CT on Rte. 32, that has one that is about 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide, it is worth seeing, it just glows. It's on the way to the Casinos, about an hour from Springfield.

Waterloo, ON(Zone 5b)

I live in zone 5b and I don't have a problem growing this shrub. I do find that they get a little "lanky" near this time of year, but I just cut back the branches a bit. This is my second year with this shrub and since it survived last winter, I think it can survive any winter. Good luck!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

debi_z, I live in zone 5 or 6 depending on our winter. I have had Salix integra Hakuro nishiki since 95. I want it to be a small tree, it is planted at the edge of my bog garden, it wants to be a low branched shrub. I think now I have it trained to a tree form, but still sends up suckers from the cut-off base, other than that no problem and it is very attractive. Donna

I have this shrub also (6A) and find that a good trimming causes beautiful growth on the ends. The new growth is much more colorful.
