I know this is kinda off topic..but today we were doing a controled burn at a lakeside park..the wind was about 15-20 MPH and the boss still said..burn it!I was on the top of a berm , on a walkway watching for hotspots.The fire got out of control and raced to the top of the berm.The flames were about 15 feet high and the fire was spreading about 50 feet per minute.I got trapped in the path of two sets of flames. I jumped behind a huge cottonwood tree to keep from getting roasted.The tree saved my life..the flames went around the tree trunk.the heat was like a kiln. So I am one lucky boy tonight. Other than smelling like a smoked sausage I'm a bit red..but you all still gotta put up with me. this isn't an April fools day joke either. :-)

Bob..I'm having a cold one right now...at the time it seemed safe enough..but fire really has a mind of its own..I believe that now.While I was behind the tree only instinct kicked in..no time to think about mortality.I'm too analytical. Just glad to be around. **WHEW!**

Kyle, the controlled burn often gets dangerous. We watched the landscape burn from our bunkhouse in Colorado. Thank God it didn't get close to our property, but man, you were lucky. Someone was watching out for you!

Kyle: Ahhh, your boss needs to check the wind next time. It was very windy in Des Moines today. I can't believe he wanted to play with fire today. Thank goodness the cottonwood tree was there and you went for it.
Kyle, I hadnt heard that one. from wheel of fortune, and I don't know where I heard the other one from, but It sure sounds funny to me. I was working on a big contract of lumber out of russia, I was the buying trader, one of my bosses was the selling trader, it was a very big order, hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was still a rookie, but had been able to put this deal together with a Russian mill, thru a turkish contact. thick oak takes about 6 months to dry. Well, here I had been waiting and waiting, and after 9 months the selling trader was getting antzy and told me to just go to russia and check it out becuase he doubted that they even had the lumber in the kiln. this was during the chechen wars. so I went over, and to my horror, they had dried the lumber improperly and there was cell collapse, totally unusable and useless... Well, the flight between turkey and portland is about 24 hours, you can well imagine that my bowels had turned to jelly on that flight worrying about how I was going to tell him that the lumber was ruined...the lumber was sold to a tank maker that was going to make tanks for cuervo tequilla.....

Oh, Kyle, I'm so glad you're okay. The wind was howling here all day, 25 miles an hour with 32 mile an hour gusts. Not much 'control' in those conditions!

You know the Cottonwood is very sacred to the lakota. When the choke cherries ripen you can generally find a lot of ceremonies going on involving that tree. They call them sundances. Among many other things, the sundance is symbolic of giving of ones life or your being to the creator. In reality, its just a bit of skin and a few days of dancing out in the hot sun with no food or water for 4 days. Glad to see this very sacred tree looked after you this day.
Sure glad you made it through that one. I'd would have needed some new "drawers" after going through that. Hope your boss learned a lesson from this and he certainly owes you a big apology.
Whew and Phew, Kyle I'm sure glad you're OK. It is hardly off topic no you--fewer brugs, water gardens and trops.
How terrible and scary! I'm so glad it turned out with you safe. I'm afraid after it was all said and done, I'd not only need a change of clothes- but a new job. I wouldn't have reacted to my boss in a very kind manner. I hope you let him know how you felt!

First of all..yes my boss has horse poop for brains...and he said"Good burn" after the fire was out. Brugmansia the cottonwood tree is a sacred plant to the Lakota people..it grows wild from eastern South Dakota to the base of the Black Hills.Only tree species in some parts of the Dakotas.They grow very big here..actually our largest tree species...some reach 100 feet when centuries old.

Eclipse: You can tell poop for brains of a boss of yours, that as of 5:00 tonight we are in a burning ban. There were too many of so-called controlled fires that got out-of-control over the weekend. Kept the fire depts. very busy. The fine is $100.00 if a fire is set now. We are very dry.
I also heard on the news that one man died in a grass fire and another was seriously burned. You are very lucky Kyle.
Kyle, I am so glad that a terrible situation turned out ok for you. I just imagine that it makes one think about life a little more seriously.
Kyle, we haven't talked before, I'm really glad you didn't get more than smoke damage. Not a very smart boss. There are quite often controlled?? burnsin the forests around here or stupid people use burn barrels, which are now against the law. It is quite windy in this area and also very dry. take care .
