New To Brugs and Dave's Garden

Albany, GA(Zone 8a)

I am an amateur avid gardener that has fell in love with Brugs. I purchased my first 5 ft tall brug last year and enjoyed a few blooms. I was anticipating my brug's return for this year but now I am skeptical. I have not seen any new growth. I am in zone 8a. Is there anyone else from this zone that would be willing to offer advice on overwintering brugs in this area? Also, should I start playing taps or will my brug rise again?

welcome to DG!! I bet yours will be just fine!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Txfive, this year you may want to take some cuttings to grow inside for the winter to make sure you have it for the following year. What color is it?

Welcome!

Waco, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi txfive, Iam also new to brugs I had gotten one "Charles Grimaldi" last summer and cut back a little above the ground this winter. I have already started getting sprout from the base of mine. They are already 2 to 5 inches tall. But mine are in full sun right now until the tree around it leafs out.

Kell,

My brug is white. I hate to admit it, but I am brug-ignorant and saw the plant in a local nursery last year and fell in love. Until recently, I did not know there were so many varieties. I can't wait to fill my garden with brugs. Yee gads....I am addicted. Is there a cure?

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

txfive, do you WANT a cure???? I don't and have happily filled my g'house with brugs.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Welcome txfive and Clayton to the brug forum.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

There is no cure for Brug Addiction. Happily, no one really wants to be cured. Before long, you'll have Brugs all over the place, and when you run out of room your friends will have them too. Then you can exchange pollen and cuttings galore, and become even more addicted. Welcome!

Mary

(Zone 7b)

Welcome :) I'm in 7b and no signs of mine yet..I'm hoping soon to find that I didn't lose them. I had a lot of Dr Seuss and they were really pretty last year.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I just found my first one up the other day. And it's the only one I was worried about coming back. Audrey Hepburn, and I'm so thrilled I don't have to beg for a cutting of her again:)

I would love to attend the Swap in Jonesboro. I am South about 2 1/2 hours. Please include me on the info.

Could you please elaborate on the details of the swap(s). Are there plants/seeds for purchase?

I am afraid that at this time I do not really have any plants or seeds that are not fairly common.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Ok - I have put links to the Ga Swap info. I will send every one directions if you will email me.

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome to DG You'll love it here. The 1 brug I had in the ground over winter has been trying to sprout for about a week now. I'm in zone 8 too. Trouble is something keeps eating it. I have sprayed and put a plastic cover on it. Sure hope it can make it. I'm not sure what is eating it but suspect it may be slugs. Hope yours comes back for you. Welcome again, Jan.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Hello and welcome from another Georgian, hope you don't have another life! Seems mine is now here.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Welcome txfive,
There is a world of information here at DG. I think you'll love it. We love this addiction to brugs. The more, the better.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Luv2garden, I have had way too many slugs this spring. I went out every night at midnight for about 6 nights straight and on the 7th night could find none! They can eat a small brug to nothing fast! I suggest an after dark hunt! If you can water at just before dark, then go out after dark for the ones with a curfew and then go out again a few hours later to catch the late night teenagers...... you will be surprised at how many you catch! hope this helps

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Kell, I have been out at night picking them off. What a job. YUCK! Worth it though if it cuts down on the rascals.
I tried the old beer in the shallow bowl thing. I found it all covered up the next morning. I guess my cat thought it smelled bad. Well I'll keep up the nightly hunt for several days and see if it helps. Thanks, Jan.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

And what method of slug disposal do you use Kell? I personally get great satisfaction in heaving them into the salty ocean water. Crab food.

Waco, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Luv2garden, Liz, and Kell, It wasn't slugs that tried to eat my brugs it was a bunch of brownish grey snails, I just put out some snail bait and it killed the snails. Now my brugs sprouts are anywhere between 6 to 8 inches tall and I have about 8 or more sprouts around my Charles Grimaldi.

I will try the beer Jan! Don't you just hate them Clayton? Though I must say I get alot of satisfaction on my hunts! The other night I am out there with my cat who thinks she is a loyal dog. It was well after midnight and dead quiet. I was a little spooked because Gabby was acting skittish. Then I smelled the absolute worse smell, and I thought OH MY GOD!...... We are being chemically attacked and I really thought we were going to be the first to die! The next night my DH was talking about the skunk smell outside.............LOL..I had no clue!

Liz, I wish I had your ocean! I just have cement.......LOL. I put their little wet, slimy bodies on the sidewalk and with a grinding motion I make them part of the cement. I often wonder if I will be punished for killing them by being stuck in a room with all the slugs and snails I have killed and being slimed for eternity.

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell,I smash em too. Liz, at least you are putting them to good use. Clayton, I was afraid to put out bait because of the cat. I found some bait last year at Wal Mart that was nonpoisonous to cats and dogs but haven't been able to find it so far this year. I've had both slugs and snails. Both are equally disgusting. Well, I guess to trick is to just keep after them no matter which method you use.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I use the slug bait and also have to worry about my animals. So, I took a clay flower saucer that a piece of the lip broken out, put the bait under the inverted saucer (with a rock on top to be sure the animals didn't move it). The slugs and snails were able to crawl into to eat the bait. It works like a charm and I was able to make a serious dent in my slug population.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I bury a shallow pan, like a pot bottom, and put a stepping stone above it,held up by stakes,so it is an inch above the rim, then fill it with beer, get lots of them that way.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sharp sand around the base of the plants or even cheaper is ground up egg shells. When they go across it, the sharp edges pierce their skin and they die.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

We are a blood thirsty lot aren't we? LOL Just be grateful that I deleted my disgusting 10 inch slug picture.

I lied, my pet slug. LOL

LOL,Liz!!!That is one big Slug!I'd have to put out a sixpack to get him!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I still think I'd faint if I saw that in person.

Tig, when I first moved to the west coast 28 years ago and saw one of those banana slugs on the road I freaked. Now I'm used to them. That's what slugs look like in BC. There are some black ones about that size that are really nasty looking.

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Boy am I glad I don't have those big slugs! I didn't think about putting the bait under a pot. I'll have to try that. I have 2 new small leaves on the brug. Hope I can keep them. I'll be out with my flash light tonight slug huntin'.
This has turned into one big SLUG FEST!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Liz, it is the eye socket on the side of its head that totally creeps me out! Makes it seem so much more ominous! ICK!!
