MG's on a Trellis

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

I have a large arched trellis and want to have my Japanese MG's grow on it. How many plants do I need to plant on each side to get a nice display? THANKS!

When I didn't know what I was doing (and I probably still don't) I went out and planted MGs around my mail box - probably way too many but this is what happened.

Arlene - that looks like "just enough". Wonder if the mailman was afraid to put his hand in the monster's mouth.

In all seriousness though - ALyssum - if you have a good vining MG, 6-8 seeds can go a long ways. I know you're asking about the height on the others, we'll wait for the expert.

TLC -- thanks for a good laugh. That is what my yard will look like if I don't get some good advice here. Maybe poppysue or parcancanda or other experienced MG growers can help me out here. -- How many plants on each side??

It looks great TLC! Is that a corn field across the street from you? Do you ever sneak across just before dinner for a few ears? LOL

I was surprised last year when some of my fancier mgs never got very tall.

Yes, kell!
It is a cornfield and some years soybeans. Sunday my DH
roto-tilled the center of the ditch. Hopefully I will have a beautiful picture to show you at the end of the summer of wildflowers we will grow there. I have 4 neighbors that are very excited about this project.

Arlene, your flowers are beautiful. That morning glory is awesome. I don't have great luck with glories. Still try though.

They were planted near the road where the soil is rocky and ugly. Brugie, your soil is probably too wonderful for the likes of a morning glory. It was very encouraging for me at the time because I knew a lot less then than I do not about gardening!

Mine did great for awhile last year, then died............. do you think I killed them with kindness?

I've grown MGs for a lot of years. They do not need to be fertilized, then they tend to grow more to vine rather than flowers. Mine self seed, so when I want to be sure the ones I have started (in Jiffy 7s, peatpots or other containers) are the ones I want, I have to keep hoeing out the volunteers. Good luck. Donna

Alyssum,
How large is large? Can you give us the measurements of your trellis?

Here is an actual photo of it:

did some research - MG's 6" - 12" apart

So twenty four inches
four plants - six inches apart

total of 8 plants

Seems to me you would want something else to go with it that would be more permanent and work its way over the top like clematus or climbing roses? What does anyone else know about this?
