After studying, where would I move and why?
mark, you asked for this...
Future visions
Any where you want to Evert!! you are young and clever and could probably go any where.
What are you studying? Could you find a job right away ? Do you want to stay close to family? Could you take some time to travel before settling down? How much longer do your studies last?....
Lots to think about....
I would move back to spain myself, if I could, but I can't for now......
South to the tropics, because you will have a doctorate in plant bioigy and you'll specialize in tropical rainforest plants.....DUH!
Just be a world traveler, and visit your garden friends wherever you happen to be. Many people have several homes, because they don't want to be limited to one place.
The only problem I see with that is having what you want when you want it, like an old favorite garment for certain moods. Or music in a wide enough variety, because to carry enough with you would require a large crate.
Nope, forget I mentioned it. One must have a garden and experience it in all of its seasons. Maybe you could live on a train, with many special cars for plants. I think I like that idea.
Aimee...now I love the train idea...! Jo
Evert, what are you interested in doing when you grow up? What will you study in University? What grade are you in now? how many yrs left...
Hmm, wonder where's Mark..
I'm on the 8th grade now, I still have on year this school, then I can go to college, and after that to a university.
I'd just like to travel and be at home and buy a new house with a large garden from Southern Finland, maybe :}
If you did your Ph.D. in ethno~botony or pharmacological botony you could head for the rainforests and find plants containing useful proteins that could later be developed into succesful medications such as paclitaxel, which comes from yew trees.
What you should begin thinking about is..., where will you do your doctoral studies. What institutions offer the best programs with the finest faculties and facilities.
My wife did the first phase of her university studies in Hannover, Germany, and then chose an American university for her Ph.D. (NOT only because I was here), because the quality of research being done in her particular field was superior to what was available in Europe.
I do not know if that would be true in your field (which isn't really decided yet). And in any event, you have at least six months to finalize your plans ;~)
Adam.

No mention of who or what Evert's partner in life might have to say about all of this?
Keep your dreams, big, kiddo! The sky is not even close to your limit :--}
I´d move somewhere tropic, U.S.A`s Puerto Rico could be fine...........but staying in Finland would be great too.
I living in here and traveling those places would maybe be the best option. there, long away from home north come`d prosy for all of this, summerwaiting, different summer, first snow`s of winter, skivacation in Lapland or close that...
if I get good numbers in school I´d could study in U.S.A.......that would be great too......but there is much troubles.....so maybe I stay in here....
Jo, I knew you would like that, you roadrunner! I am growing fonder of the idea as I think of it. Few people know that if you own a train, you can use established tracks. Just buy a car every few years, keep adding to provide space for all of your needs and wants. You could offset the cost by transporting people and things, although that gets into regulations and paperwork, and might mean some adjustments to your schedule and destinations. I have a friend who wanted to sail the seas, and finally gave up his broadcast news job to do just that. He had diligently shopped until he found a good deal on a large ship, or yacht, and for several months a year he takes paying guests on cruises. He predetermines his destinations, then begins taking reservations. It might be a group that assembles itself, or random vacationers. He has truly followed his dream. He always said, find what you like to do and then find a way to make it pay. His patience and determination paid off.
do a horticultural degree and get jobs in the best botanic gardens around the world and then choose the one you want to work in.
But I don't want to become a botanist :P I want to be a mail sorter, or osoitehuoltaja ("address corrector"), or work in a currency exchange bureau.
if i could live where ever i wanted-tropical
Hawaii-virgin islands-bahamas somewhere warm and pretty all the time!
blue blue water and flowers everywhere!
Evert you gotta aim higher with the interest you have in plants
I am confused about your schools. In the US we go grades 1-6 in "grammar school" sometimes called primary school. The we go to Middle School for grades 7&8 and then high school for grades 9-12. It's only after high school that we go to a college or university. Do you mean that you go straight from 8th grade to the university where you get a degree?
No, we have ala-aste, it's grades 1-6, then ylä-aste, it is grades 7-9 (I'm on 8th now), then you can go to luki or ammattikoulu, they take 2 to 3 years, then you can go to university etc.
Evert, when I was growing up in Izmir, there used to be a ship that would come to port a couple of times a year, it was a high school program, and there were kids from all over the world on it, they would do their studies on board, then when they stopped in ports they would study and tour the city and learn about the culture/history and what not. I always thought this would be a great adventure. You might look into something like this for one of your high school years, But evert, aim high in life, in this world today with internet access, you can do so much preparation and research for what you would like to be.
In your school, do they have "career planning" My son is in 9th grade, and all year this year, they have been working on careers, this has been an eye opener for my son, who was planning all along to become an engineer like his father and brothers, but when they looked at different career options, he choose architecture in the beginning of the school year, but then changed his mind to Law. You have plenty of time to research yet, talk to people, all types of people. Talk to your father and mother, they might have some suggestions for you to look into. What do you think you would be happy doing? do you really think sorting mail will satisfy you in 15 years? you are a very bright and intelligent young man, you seem to be ambitious, I think being a mail sorter or address corrector might not keep you happy and motivated. Why not look into something to do with plants, hybridizing etc? there are many aspects of horticulture that might be pleasing to you. Not necessarily botany.
dont make up your mind at this stage, as I said, my son was set on being an engineer, but when he looked into the different options, he has changed his mind twice already. I am sure that in your schools there are programs that will help you decide.
I think with the collection of people here at Dave's you will get some very good advice. Ask people what they do for a living, what made them choose their fields, are they still happy doing that? how much schooling did they need before they could start in their chosen field?
We are all avid gardners here, how do we incorporate our love of gardeining with our profession?
Evert, the world is your oyster, you can do anything you want to do, reach for the stars, you can do it.

Evert, you ask a question that has no 'fixed' or 'correct' answer. You will enter a program of professional studies and then something you never experienced before will cause you to shift the direction of your schooling and career line. The world is changing so fast you cannot decide today what you will be doing 10 or 20 years from now. What you eventually wind up doing may have nothing to do with your previous professional training. Your goal in education should be to take the natural talent you have and develop it and yourself into the best EVERT the world will ever meet, a caring, loving, responsible, happy young man with employable skills and a dream by which to set his course. There is no 'training ' period for life. This is not a practice run. This is it. Enjoy every minute of it as you move along your life course. Don't limit your education to training for a job, train for life :-), live it fully with the wonderment of each sunrise, each new song from an unseen bird, the touch of the spume from a crashing wave, the whif of the perfume from an newly opened flower. Be spontaneous and free. Free to be the you that you will someday be. Don't decide now where the journey will end. You will shortchange yourself. Walk with courage along paths for which you have no maps. Happy journey
Evert - believe me... you don't want to be a mail sorter. It's the most BORING job anyone could have!!
Pebble, wish there was a ship like that now.. ;)
Yes we have career planning (OPO) at school. Or actually, we have it on all grades of Ylä-Aste. On 7th grades it is mostly about social skills and such, on 8th grade we make a discourse about a job we could like, and on 9th grade, we have a "TET" week, it means "työelämään tutustuminen", something like "get to know job life". We must get ourselves a working place for one week.
Maybe I can try mail sorting while I am still studying, and unsure of what I want to do later?
Evert that is a good idea, can you do it as a summer job in between school years? I think they still have on board schools like that now, I looked into it not too long ago for my children. I'll see if I can find something for you.
And Evert, you dont have to make a decision now....you have a while yet to explore all your options.

here are a couple of links to give you an idea of scool on board a ship...
Actually I'd like to work as an address corrector more than mail sorter, as nowadays mail is being sorted by hand. Or then it would be nice to work in a PO. Maybe, when I am studying, I could do it as a part-time job.
Thanks for the links, it would be interesting, but surely expensive and even the plane ticket to the nearest port where the ship would stop would cost a lot from here ;)
Evert, I think there may be some programs similiar to the ones I gave you that are based out of your area.
Evert, listen to all the advice you receive. Then DO what your own heart tells you to do.
Wow Padre, That was great! I agree, experience every moment of every day and enjoy it!
Evert, I do career counseling for our students (grades 9-12) a lot at school. Here's the website I usually start with: http://trackstar.hprtec.org/main/track_frames.php3?track_id=61779&nocache=1540107127
I bet you'll end up living in Finland because you won't want to move too far from your family. But I bet you'll take vacations every year and see lots of places and gardens (and lots of DG people).
I'm sure you will always do gardening and photography because you love those things and are so good at them.

It sounds like you really like detail work, Evert. I can see how the address correction work would be interesting to you. I like detail work, myself. :)
Ha, shall I correct all the addresses on the Address Exchange list (and add all the zip+4 codes) ;) HaHa
Btw, I still haven't got the new address exhange list... did you send it again to me as it bounced the first time as you remember.
LOL, you just knock yourself out! ;) I have not sent the new lists out just yet. It's so beautiful outside today, I've been doing a little stuff outside each time I have to walk the dogs - a little raking, a little tidying up, etc. I am kinda scatterbrained. :)
:o
OK, I just thought if you had forgotten to resend it to me ;)
Well, Evert, since you like detail work, and you know about horticulture, maybe you should look into proofing articles for a garden magazine or some similar publication. You might even write articles yourself, then submit them as a freelance writer until you find something else. You could begin working on that now, because you can use the computer to find likely targets and your age isn't a factor. Why not send a few timely articles to the local newspaper? Contact garden centers and ask if they will distribute some helpful articles about local gardening problems and solutions, just by leaving them at the checkout counter. That gets your name and writing style before an interested market.
Well I could ask, but I don't know what I would write about ;)
I'm sure Evert will not play any sport!! ;}
Well Evert, I have decided that now that I am a grownup what I really want to be is a kid.
I hope that whatever job you decide to take in the future it will be one that offers you satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. If that is sorting mail or correcting addresses, driving a bus or being a Doctor a lawyer or a scientist it doesn't matter so long as you are content with it. There are so many choices and you are sure to find something to please yourself if you look about. Whatever you decide it is important to find something that is satisfying to YOU!
Zany, I fully endorse your views. You have put things so clearly and so briefly. Zany, if you think of being a kid again, there is a very easy way. We see everywhere the fast forward, play, pause, record, rewind and all sort of buttons. Just press the rewind button and you are there!!! LOL
You could write about the intricicies and artfulness of address correction, and marvel at a postal system in which every American could have as many as 3.57 personal zip codes.
00000~0000 through 99999~9999.
I guess it's so that junk mail can reach us at home, work, at the shopping mall..., and the .57 of a zip code could be so the stuff could catch up with us as we wait in line at the McDonald's drive~through.
Adam.
LOL Dinu, If I can figure out where the rewind button is I'll try it!
Evert, I agree with what Zanymuse said.
I'm a believer in following your heart in things like this because I feel that so often the desires of your heart are there for a divine purpose.
Does that make sense?
