Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I found a malanga in the store here finally! so you can keep that one or trade to someone else. You're a doll for thinking of me.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

tiG it is 18º here,I'm ready to toss some ears in the truck and come down there to help you plant,I'm sick of the cold!!!
I would plant it like an EE,I like to leave just enough above the soil to get light to the bulb, even if it the size of a dime, are you going into the ground with it?or giving it a jump start in the house?

Yeah!!It just jumped to 19º!LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

lol!! come on down! I'm going to start it indoors, it's about 6" long. thanks and I'll see you for lunch.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I can sure put you to work!!! I have to find something to work the brug seedling bed. I've moved everything out of it except for a few daylilies on the edges. Still have a couple of last years seedlings to dig up and get out of the way.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Hey Tig, I didnt know what a malanga was, so I did a search, I thought they were a type of lemon from the philippines, but boy was I wrong, here is a little blurb I found on the nutritional quality of this plant... I'm thinking it must also have very spectacular foliage....

Malanga is probably the most hypoallergenic food in the world, so even persons with extensive allergies should do very well with this flour. The reason? The starch grains are the smallest and most easily digested of all complex carbohydrates. Malanga is closely related to the taro root, which is used to make poi, a cooked paste, common in Polynesian countries. Malanga and taro root are in the Arum family, Araceae. Malanga is also called yautia, cocoyam, eddo, coco, tannia, sato-imo, and Japanese potatoes. Malanga are about the size and shape of a regular white potato; they look a little like an overgrown gladiola bulb, because the outside skin of the malanga is brown and somewhat hairy.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Pebble.Have you seen a picture of the plant?we are not growing them to eat,LOL,at least I'm not.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I saw a picture of the root.....(the edible part) I didnt see a picture of the plant...I'll do a search for it.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

oh my g....WOW SA,
I remember you had a post about growing them, you had gotten a whole bunch of the roots, Is this what they are going to become? oh wow...You dont have any extras do you?
can you think of anything to trade for it?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

pebble, first if you have a Superwalmart close, call the produce dept and see if they carry them. would be even cheaper than postage. Ours carry them but they were always out when I went. I finally lucked up.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Our walmart doesnt have a grocery center, but if it carried in grocery stores, I will look at some that might carry it, would Oriental grocery stores be more likely to carry them? I have one very close to me that I can check out. Thanks for the tip. You're right, would definately be cheaper than postage probably...

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have a case of them Pebble, but it so cold here, and I want to include live plants to the folks I'm sending to also,be glad to send you some if you can't get them,I'm just waiting for a warm up.we just hit 23º now,I'm ready for spring!!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

tiG,were they reasonable in price there?I think mine worked out to .30 per.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Amazing! The one on the left? Will it stay in that size pot?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

You Two girls would have dropped your jaw like I did today,as moving the plants out on a cart,I saw pots of Brugs, only a few feet high, but they looked like a full flush coming, they were some he had cut and put in pots.He is like me,Novice!,all he could tell me was they were white, yellow,or peach.I did ask what he gave them,he told me,something called blast.thats the Brugs I'm talking about.
The EEs,the tall one is one of the first ones I bought quite a few years ago, short fat one is a baby from it.The one in the small pot is still not as big as the first one I ever ran across. So for me,I have to put them in the ground,I love to see what they do with my compost, digging up and potting will come later,!,someone pull this thread up this fall went I am cussing pulling them,LOL!!!It is my labor of love!

Are these the same ones that you posted a picture about? In front of your house? Really amazing!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You know that one plant would take up a fourth of my livingroom. But, I'd give it up to have one like that. How long will it take mine to get that big? In other words, how many years old is it?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I'm going to ask Kim from Plants Delight tomorrow,I hope they have a record of my first purchase.could be five years or more.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Hi everyone, Wow..Those Malangas are massive! I'll have to get one! Would they survive here in Ireland? Calocassia esculenta and Allocassia macrorhizos just make it but don't grow very much in our summers and the leaves stay small too! Any advise on getting them to grow?

Bruno

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Bruno,These are Alocasia Macros,I am still working on the Malangas,Malanga seems to be slow to start,Do you have Alocasia?I will be happy to send you one!I can send a Malanga bulb also, maybe you will have better luck with it,tiG has your Malanga popped up?
Bruno, the other name Malanga goes by is Yautia,if you want to see big run a search for Yautia in PDB.
Bob

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)
