Sweet Potato vines??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've got to make a trip to the nursery for the new ones!!!

Warrenton, OR(Zone 8b)

Does anyone know if you can grow a Potato Vine from seed. I had the varigated white/green/pink last year and I was wondering if the seed I found would sprout.

Any help would be appreciated.

Teisha, it should grow, but whether it will come 'true' to the variety is uncertain. I think it would be interesting to plant some and find out what you get. It wouldn't tke long for them to grow enough to determine whether any of them are "keepers". If so, you could propagate them in the future from cuttings or the potatos. John

OK tiG. My fuchsias won't be ready for a few weeks either. I'll let you know and you let me know.

I have the veragated one also. I believe mine made a potatoe. I bought it last year at a local nursery here. I think it was a huge pot for around $5. I'll check and see if they have them again this weekend and if they do I'll spring for one and get cuttings to all that want one. My DIL and I split one lst year and still had a huge pot each.
The margurita that I got feom Tig last year was so pretty. I have it and also the blackie.

Brugie,
Bare with me here, I've never rooted/planted any kind of potato (I know, I know..for shame :( ).
You root one end in water with the toothpicks to hold it like I've seen kids do. Then what? You snap the growing shoots off? Do you turn it back over and root that end too? Won't that be like as 2 butted no headed cat? And how do you cut it up and plant it? Does the cut need to dry out first? Thanks, I know this is simple stuff.

when you snap off the sprout, you put the end that was growing on the potato in water (it will be small, make sure it doesn't fall all the way into the water)
You don't plant the potato, or I never did. Just let the sprouts grow to 2-3", snap them off and either pot them right up or put in water for roots. The 2-3" sprouts will have leaves, they kindof tell you what to do from there.

thanks debi z

can you do this with a regular sweet potatoe from the grocery store?
or are these all specialty potatoes?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

By the time your potato has finished throwing up sprouts, there will be nothing left of the potato for growing. However, you will get a lot of plants from breaking off the shoots and rooting them. So, don't worry about the rooted potato. You will throw it away. It is the growth that it shoots out that you want to save. I like to let mine get at least three inches long or even four and then I break them off to root in water. You will get shoots from one end to the other on the potato tuber. It won't hurt a thing if they shoot out under water. They will be rooted when you break them off then. Write me if You have any question. I'll be happy to help you.

How & when do you prepare your potatoes for the winter?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't have good luck holding them over. They don't like to be cold. This winter I'll put them in the basement. Those that I kept from last year, and that wasnt' many, I kept in Jim's shop in a plastic bag hanging from a nail. They are fine. Some people wrap in newspaper, but I don't have time for that.

Thanks,Brugie!!
I may try, just to see what happens.

I just knock most of dirt off, put them in an empty black pot and stick them in the coldest room in the house.

tiG and Brugie - just wanted to say thanks for the info! I thought I had 'watched this thread' but hadn't seen anything pop up. I checked and low and behold you guys had answered me yesterday :P. Guess I need to hop back over to the brain cell coop and put in an extra order!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I overwintered the veragated, blackie and marguretia in my basement, I looked yesterday and they all had leaves still showing. I'll look closer after I get back from Fl. swap necxt week and see if they have potatoes. I think the varigated one did last fall.

Georgiaredclay,
I'd love to have a wee bit of variegated and margarite if you have some to spare.
