Sweet Potato vines??

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Will anyone have any of the sweet potato vines (ipomoea batatus) to trade this spring? If I can line up a couple trades I won't bother ordering any. I really want the gold one... and one of the black ones.

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

I have some small rooted cuttings of the green ones if you are interested. Cheryl

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Poppy, I'll have the Blackie and the Marguirita (lime green). I haven't started them yet, but was looking at the potato today and thinking.

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

Mitjo,I think they are talking about the ornamentals, you can see them to the left trailling down the grass, not a very good picture of them, but you can see the 2 colors

tiG did you save potatoes from your vines?I did not get one last year,Shirley says they may be deeper then I dug,I think since I let them trail over onto the grass they put energy into putting roots down, sure would like to make a swap if you have some.:)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

doc, I started mine last night, I know I have Blackie and one Margarite. I thought I dug Ace of Spades, have to put out a hunt today. the minute they are big enough to send (which rarely takes long) I'll send you some.

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

Tig - I was going to start my own SPV by using a couple potatoes from the supermarket. How do you get a hold of the "margarite" potato?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I had to start them by buying a small plant at the nursery. Then I saved the potatoes last year. There is also the variegated, but it didn't make any potatoes for me this past year.

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'll probably have some of the Blackie and the Margarite small rooted cuttings in a few weeks. Check back with me. Last year I had them running out my ears.

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

OK - I'll make a note of it. Thanks!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've just put four tubers in water of the Ace of Spades. Will have extra if they grow for the swap in May. Should have some extra for you to Bonnie. Will let you know as soon as I see some eyes opening up.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

save me one plant in case I don't find my potato please??? I'll let you know in the next couple of days.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

No problem....

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

How come mine never grew a potato last year? I think it was Blackie that I had. I looked for a potato but I never found one.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it might not have had enough time. Mine were in the beds with the brugs and with all the food, they couldn't help it. I had the green one everywhere, and only got one potato from it, but collected about 10 of the Blackie. I didn't look for them all.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Hmmm... I'll have to try them in the ground. I had it in a container last year.

Lake Stevens, WA(Zone 8a)

I think these are the sweet potato vines that are sold as basket stuffers here. However, I did not know and have never seen a potatoe from them! Are the nurseries keeping it secret or is the temperture too cool here? Look good in hanging baskets, but they are pricey and I'd sure love to be able to do my own. Notice: will trade fuchsia start for sweet potato vine start. Any takers?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if planted in the ground or a very big container, they will make potatoes. although I've never seen one from the variegated, but ...
I will make that trade with you, I'm starting the blackie and Margarite. it will take a few weeks though.

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

I had blackie, margarite and the variegated in containers last year. You are right tiG, no taters from the variegated, only 1 from marg. but several from blackie. How do you start them? Like regular taters?
Thanks!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yes, in a glass. My margarite started putting out a few sprouts before I got it in water. I hear there are several new varieties this year, I'm going to have to go shopping.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I got that new one from Logee's last year, its variegated...green and white,Ivory something.....?
It did form a tater that I saved....just gotta find it.....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I had pink frost a couple of years ago and couldn't get it to grow. Doc, I'm not sure about Ivory Jewel, but they have all the rest of these at our greenhouse for $1.98. Shirley's greenhouse will have Ace of Spades and Margarita with some luck. Even have the kind you eat. Iowagal is bringing Margarita to the swap too.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Shirley, I can't find my Ace of spades, if you can save me a sprout when they get going, I'd really appreciate it!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

No problem Bonnie. I have three of them in water, but no signs of anything yet.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have some potatoes of Blackie and Marguarite in newspaper in my garage right now. They were in a 12" pot on my porch all summer and towards the end the potatoes started rising up out of the surface of the soil. I love how the potatoes are green and purple too! The wierd thing is that the purple potato is the Marguarite and the green one is the blackie! What I want to know is do I have to start these guys in water or can I just put them back in the ground after frost?
thanks

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think you can plant the eyes just like you do regular potatoes, but I think the wait would be quite a while. It is so easy just to put one end of the potato in water and let the eyes sprout to 4 or 5 inches, break them off, and then root in water. I'm not sure how a whole sweet potato would work in the ground. If it would decide to rot, you would not have any plants. Also by using the whole potato, you might have so many in one spot that they wouldn't grow as well as a single plant. Guess it is up to you, but living in Iowa, we have to get ours started early. Good Luck!!

I thought last year someone said the tuber will rot(I don't know why)
I just finally threw my tuber for the Chartruse one out.....it put out babies from last spring till a few weeks ago........tons of them......
and I found my ivory jewel tuber and its in water, hope it does as well as the chartruse

CC,Thats a potatoe vine?I like it!does it fill in as fast as the purple ones?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

It didn't seem to grow as fast as the purple or the chartruse.......but I liked it....
