Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

Thank you all for the nice welcome. I am from SE Iowa. A little town called Selma. Pop. 60. It is near Fairfield and Ottumwa. I love to post pictures. It is so easy to do here. I have a digital camera my DH got me for Christmas and I am having a ball with it. I have a small 8x12 attached greenhouse that my DH built me late last summer and fall. I think I have died and gone to heaven. I told him the other day I needed another one and he said he was going to pretend he didn't hear that. Oh well , worth a try. You are going to be sorry you asked for pictures. :o) My orange brug is sending out a new batch of buds. I don't have a name for them . They are just cuttings that friends gave me. I do have a red sang that has a seed pod on it. So far it is hanging right in there. Linda

Hi LindaKay. I am almost your neighbor.........I live approx. 60 miles east of Dubuque. The Monroe, WIS, area. Spouse and I remodeled an old hog building into a greenhouse last summer, it is 30x64. Right now it is Nirvana to go up in there and see all the green, blooming stuff. When the sun shines during the day, it is wonderfully warm and tropical. :>) Welcome to the group.

Welcome to Daves LindaKay.

Welcome Lindakay to DG, think you will fit in with a bunch of brug nuts..

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, Renee and I are definitely working on getting the job done this year. Now I know there is hope since Linda did it.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

My greenhouse keeps me sane when the snow is blowing.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Hi LindaKay, What did you pollinate this one with?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Linda, do you have a picture of the bloom that you could post? Thanks!!

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

I pollinated it with itself. I only have one sang. Here is the picture of it.

Welcome Linda to Dave's. Good job on the sang and the pod.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cool. I was beginning to think I might have been dreaming.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

There were four blooms on it at once and I just took my finger and twiddled it around in all of them . I made about two rounds on all of them. I hope this isn't x rated.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

as long as you only twiddle the brug blooms it should be ok.............

lots of yellow in that bloom. very pretty! where did you get this one Linda? Do you keep it in your GH all summer long? is it colder in there than outside?

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

I got it from Van Borg whatever. Can't remember the name for sure and I don't have the catalog around. It was a mail order. I got it last spring and kept it in the sun till it got hot. I put it where it got noon and afternoon shade. It did better in the shade. When I got my greenhouse done I move it inside . That was in the fall just before frost. It really took off after I put it inside. The blooms are so beautiful the pictures just can't capture how pretty they are.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Well done LindaKay, Normaly Sanguinea won't pollinate itself because it's self sterile! I hope you get some seeds out of that one! If you do, label them Self-fertile Sang because they're quite special! Well done!

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

You mean I have blundered into some good luck??? I hope I can keep my fingers off it long enough for it to mature. Is there a chance that it might be empty. I sure hope not. If it is empty will it fall off eventually? I have a pod on an orange brug that has been on it since fall. It was crossed with a pink one. Will it turn brown when it is ready? I haven't seen a mature pod before. A friend and I were together on a pod but she picked it and got the seeds out without me seeing it. I know she had it on all winter.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I wait to pick pods untill the stem (peduncle) is yellow and then I wait a bit longer. Some have still been green when I've picked them and others have been brown. One even opened and dropped seeds while on the plant. I'm not good at doing the search thing, but if you go to the threads that Snowhermit has started, you will find a thread or two that have seed pictures, pods and all.

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

Lindakay, there's some good info describing when a pod is ripe on the ABADS website with good pictures of ripe pods!
You'll find it on the right hand side of this page: http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/brugmansia_seeds.htm

Best wishes,

Bruno

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

It is so nice to meet you. As you know, we snow birds are looking so forward to spring - please post pictures.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

That is a lot of good information Bruno. I heard bad news today. They said on the news that el nenyoe was going to make us a late spring. Sorry about the spelling.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Linda, here we had an early spring but now it is getting cold again!

Bruno, what an incredible page on seeds......I had never seen that before. I did not know I should be keeping my seeds in the refrigerator! Between my amaryllis bulbs, my pollen and now my seeds, my DH is going to make me a dinner one of these nights that will be deadly!

Co.Wicklow, Ireland(Zone 8b)

LOL...Just make sure your DH doesn't mistake the bulbs for Onions..LOL

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Welcome LindaKay, I enjoyed your pictures and look forward to seeing some more. I cant wait to hear about your seed pod, and what you have produced.

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

Thank You Pebble. I will post pictures as it grows.
