Ilex crenata Sky Pencil Japanese Holly

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I am wondering if this would be a nice one to put in
my zone 4b landscaping. What are it's requirements?
Anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks,
TLC

Sorry, this is the best pic I could find.

I have had Ilex crenata for 12 years; the lowest temperature has been -20 F., for a period of 4 or 5 days. I would try one with good winter mulch. Do any nurseries in your area have this plant for sale? Or nurseries north of you? If so buy it in the spring so the roots have a chance to develop. Fertilize to produce root growth, but stop in the middle of August for hardening of the shoot growth.

Only plants purchased in the spring from southern nurseries will do well here. They need the period of summer to prepare for the colder environment.

Thanks,
Do you have any pictures? It really called to me and I may wait another year to put it in. How tall and wide is yours?

Hi TLC, my hollys are the shrub type, not 'Sky Pencil'.

Nurseries in my area don't have much for sale that is interesting to me. I definitely would like some holly and saw the pencil holly in a nursery magazine. I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't get out of control and be invasive as I believe some holly can be.
thank you

Twinlakes, I ordered Ilex crenata Sky Pencil from Greers this spring. i called them yesterday to see if they had everything I ordered, so if not I could order somewhere else. They said as far as they could tell they had everything and would ship the end of March. i have not grown Sky Pencil before, but am looking forward to seeing it in my new just being developed woodland area. rutholive (Donna)

Oh, good! Please let me know how they do; i don't think I would be able to do it until next spring as things are going so slowly here with the landscaping.
