I live in Baton Rouge,La and I have a 4 year old red bud tree that has never budded. I'm not sure what the problem is I have fertilized it and it has grown and has leaves every year, but no blossoms. It appears healthy..what is the problem. I'm so confused!
Redbud trees.no blooms????
Is your tree 4 years old from seed or was it purchased from a nursery and has been in the ground for 4 years? How large it the tree (height and width)? I am guessing that it may not be old enough or is not established enough to flower.
Where is the tree planted? Heavy shade? Full sun? Does it get watered regularly? A happy tree will flower. If there have been any stresses on the tree (drought, etc.) that will delay flowering.
Mike
Hi MIke.. The tree was bought at the nursery and was half the size it is now which is 15 feet high and the trunk is 12 inches in diameter. It was planted at the start of "el nino" which means it didn't probably get enough water initially although it has grown considerably. It is planted in a small flower bed in full sun. I just spoke to a nursery and they suggested that in the fall I ferilze it with a high middle number ferilizer as they think that is what it is lacking. What do you think...this year has no hope!
Well, before you fertilize the tree you might want to get your soil tested. Your local university or county extension agent should be able to give you info on where you can have this done. It is not very expensive...maybe 10.00 or so. That will tell you if you need to add anything to the soil.
I just did a google search to see what the native range of the redbud tree is and it showed it growing in zones 5a to 9a. What zone is Baton Rouge? Is it above zone 9a? Maybe it's too warm there for the tree to produce buds (either summer or winter temperatures)? Just a thought....
Mike
Mike..we are in zone 8b and there are redbuds all over down here, there is even a Redbud Festival in Vivian La. which is the northwest corner of the state. The festival is the third weekend in March. I think I'll test the soil myself, as I just got a kit and see what that turns up. Thanks for the input! Wendy
