Coleus in Rooting Gel

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Got this 6-pack of gel from Lee Valley. So far so good with the coleus and will be trying the Tamarisk again in spring. It's so simple as you just poke a hole in the top and insert the cuttings.

Haiger I don't think I've seen that set up. What's it called? There must be link somewhere to it. Something like that would do me a lot of good... I'm awful with cuttings!

I got this from Lee Valley - it is just called the Gel Rooting System - the pkg. is a mini greenhouse with 6 rooting compartments filled with a water-retaining gel containing rooting hormone. It can be reused. The outfit is $13.50 and replacement 6-packs are $7.50, but one should do me for now as the coleus are all three in one cell and there are five more to use in addition to reusing this one.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info!! We are all looking for help with cuttings, especially the more difficult ones. I think I am going to order it today.

I wonder if you could make your own system like this with the rooting hormone and water retaining crystals? Has anyone tried this???

Haighr, so glad to see that someone has already tried this product. Just rec'd my Lee Valley garden catalogue on Fri & this was on my 'order' list. I thought it looked like a neat item & hope to use it for penstemon & salvia cuttings this summer. Let us know if you try any other cuttings....Linda

Forgot to add that the system is $18.95 in Canada & the replacement gel packs are $10.95.

So far it is doing well for the coleus. Am going to try wisteria, tamarisk and my black pussy willow as softwood cuttings the end of May. I'll keep you posted.
