(now you can laugh at the photo)
Mitjo & Evert
That's great! Looks like you had a warm place to visit - is that a conservatory/greenhouse? How did you first meet, here at DG? Or did you get Mitjo to join DG?
It's the Helsinki Botanical cacti room. We met in the Finnish gardening site, and then I got Mitjo joining here :}

Evert and Mitjo, It is great that you two were able to meet. How fortunate that you live fairly close to each other, you can trade plants in the spring...
ps-2: great thanks the seeds Evert.....their were nice suprises too...
tiG, I'm not very smily person :)
(only in text ;))
BTW, I found a nice shop in the railway station - they sold root beer, and vanilla & cherry coke and other neat stuff there! :D Not very cheap though. I bought a can of vanilla coke. Next time I'll buy root beer.
What a couple of handsome Finnish fellas! Sounds like you had a great time.

Evert, I bet you smile at your plants:) and root beer is the best, it's my favorite besides sweet tea. Mitjo, I like your hair like this, you are both very nice looking young men.
Both of you look so nice...and I am very glad you finally go to meet. Jo
Evert and Mitjo I have enjoyed reading your posts. How delightful to see you two young men so interested in gardening. I had a delightful visit to Helsinki too, but that was back 30 years ago. The training ship I taught on put into Helsinki for four days so our students (college lads studying to be merchant seamen) could get a small taste of your culture. I remember sitting on the steps of the Opera House, next to the rail station watching the police come and remove the sleeping drunks from the base of the statue that is in the park there. I'm glad they didn't come and remove us ;-). We went to a sauna on the end of a pier and then jumped into the freezing water and ran back into the sauna. Ha! Oh what pleasant memories you stir up. I look forward to hearing more from both of you.
Good to se you evert !
Please to meet you Mitjo !
Isn't good that you can meet and enjoy a lovely day out at the Garden !
Thanks comments for everyone.........
it nice to hear that Padre had good visit in Helsinki, even there was long time ago.
besides I bought cherrycoce at the same shop........I drunk it in train......it was good too.......
it nice to meet you cristina!

What a nice picture! It's great to have a gardening friend so close.Great to meet you Mitjo! It's good to hear that you can find rootbeer so close to home,Evert.I just found a store that sells it here,so I was in heaven(also my favorite tiG,next to cream soda!)
Hey Padre, where in the Bronx are you? I grew up in Coop City, and my parents still live there.
Gwist
Nice to hear someone has visited Finland :} Saya has too, long time ago..
Mitjo, your coke seems to be from Germany, mine was Swedish :}
Gwist, how much does the root beer cost there? In the shop it was 2 € (2.10 $) for a can! The cokes were 1,40 €.
Gwist, I live at Fordham University, across the road from the New York Botanical Gardens. Yes, I'm a member. Evert and Mitjo, if you ever come to New York I could host you here while you visited the NYBG. Several of my Norwegian students came over for a visit one year and had a great time.
nice to meet you (Gwist) too.
yeap:) I watched that can close yesterday.......and there is Germany text.
I almost bought root beer.........I haven`t taste it ever.......and I asked Evert "tastes it good?".....he said "it`s good"......"it little tastes dentifrice".........so I balked little bit.........LOL....
I will sure buy it next time.
I contact you if I`m coming in New York..........but I little suspect that.....
Hey Evert,that is a lot for rootbeer!!! I paid 1.50 chf(about $1.10),but I would love to find Vanilla Coke,lol!
Oh Padre....I lived 10 minutes away from the Garden.I would go every weekend when I was younger and have picnics on the hill,or at the Gazebo...is it still there? Gone is the hole in the fence for late night parties, lol, and gone are the free days, too(I think),but still a beautiful place.Evert and Mitjo,if you are ever in New York,it's a must-see.The one in Brooklyn is nice, too, but I haven't been there in ages!
You can visit the NYBG on its web site http://www.nybg.org/
I will be taking classes there later this month on shade gardening. Check their schedule of classes. Wednesday mornings are free to the public. That's when most of the schools have their field trips. Does the Helsinki Botanical Garden have a web site?
oh! that`s very beautifull!
yes they have........here is the English version: http://www.helsinki.fi/ml/botgard/index-e.html
gwist, I love cream soda too!! Mitjo, root beer is wonderful, except for the Coke brand version called "Barqs" I can't stand it, it has a bitter after taste, not like the real thing. You would like root beer and cream soda I think. I was disappointed in vanilla coke, would rather buy my own coke and add vanilla flavoring.
yammy! you`ve got many nice daintys in there........
Gwist, yes it is. But a special shop... and I don't know any other place which sells it. I think they even import their products to the country by themselves.
It sure would be fun visiting US sometime. :) I've been to Switzerland a couple of times already. Last time by boat ;)
Helsinki Botanical doesn't have very good websites.. but the place is great. Too small anyway.. and it can't become any bigger, it's "city blocked" :(
hmm.......is that the reason because of they made the Kumpula-garden?
Perhaps. There aren't a lot of place for trees in Kaisaniemi. But Kumpula is all different. There is no greenhouse though.
Ok!:)
is that long away from Kaisaniemi?
Evert, you almost caught me on that one - going to Switzerland by boat. :-) I've been to almost all of the European countries by ship but we could never get our ship to climb the mountains to get to Switzerland! Thanks for the web site for the Helsinki Botanical Garden. It looks like you could spend days visiting the garden and still have more to see.
Mitjo, not very, it is somewhere near Pasila I think?
Padre, the boat went from Evian-les-Bains (where we spent 2 weeks in 1996) to Lausanne. Got it now? =)
:)
:)
I live in Lappeenranta....which is not very big city.....and here is not Botanical garden or anything like that and it nice to go to Helsinki sometimes..........and here is no my aged guys who grow plants.........so, it was nice to meet Evert...........guy who has same interest than me..........in here everybody just complain of plants......one guy call me florist.......so.......
and it was nice to talk other things too than plants with Evert....

Evert, you got me that time. OK Now I understand. :-)
Lol Evert,I thought you took the long way via the Rhein!
It's funny...Some soda is regional here in the US. When we went to the Roundup in Tennessee last year, we brought Carol7 two 12-packs of Squirt, a grapefruit-flavored soda. She lives in Virginia and can't get it there, and she was craving it and begged us to bring her some from Ohio!
