Seed question?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7a)

This may seem like a silly question, but here goes... I buy a lot of cut flowers at the grocery store if it isn't blooming season in my garden because I always like to have vases of flowers to look at in the house. I am wondering if you can let those flowers dry out and harvest the seeds for planting. Or will they not germinate? The one I'm interested in now is Japanese carnation (I think that's what it's called). Has anyone tried anything like this?

Thanks,
Shannon

Wow - what a great idea. I hope someone here knows the answers, because I'd like to know, too.

If the seeds were mature when they were harvested I don't see why not. Throw some in a baggie with a moist papertowel and watch them. That's what I have done with ones I was not sure about :)

I think most seeds need to mature on the growing plants. In the weed world some plants seeds do continue to mature even after they are picked off the plants. I'm not sure this is the case with most plants we grow though!
