Does anyone know where I can buy Tropical Hibiscus seeds? I have looked all over and have had no luck.
Tropical Hibiscus Seeds
glory, have you tried the seed trading forum??? Elaine good luck
Gloria, I'm looking too, if I find any, will let you know.
Hey Gals! You look funny outide the brug forum - LOL! The American Hibiscus Society has a seed bank. It doesn't specify if you need to be a member to recieve seeds. I'd write and ask http://americanhibiscus.org/aboutahs.htm
thanks poppy, will write him today!!!
Poppy,
Yes, they open the gates on the Brug forum and look what got out. LOL
I was on Google for hours last night and The Hibiscus Society was the only place I ran across seeds.
tiG,
Have you ever pollinated a T. Hibiscus? I had a seed pod on one last year but I picked it to soon....bad me.
no, I was too busy painting brugs:) maybe I can get mine going early this year and have something to share next year!
I have grown these from seeds years back..I got the seeds from the American Hibiscus Society as a member. I don't think they sell them..but members can petition for some. They can take years to bloom from seed..and many are throw aways because of genetic flaws. Some can be really beautiful though. :-)
Eclipse, I have been told by several people that cuttings taken from seedling tropical hibiscus will bloom before the plant itself. Reasons unknown. Any experiences with that? I did take a few from each plant, but nothing yet. John
Last year I got 1 seed pod and have grown 1 plant from that pod. They are hard to get seeds from. The pods usually fall off before they mature. A rather hard plant to proagate by making seed.
Deanne, did you hand pollinate the blooms?
Fancy seeing you all over here and not on the brug forum ! I have quite a few hardy hibiscus seeds I would trade for brug seeds lol. If anyone is interested let me know.
Cheryl
Cheryl..........which seeds do you have? Hibiscus from seed can be tricky!!

I got some T. Hibiscus seeds in the mail yesterday from the Hibiscus Society....check out their website for information on getting seeds.
I got mine yesterday too!!! can't wait to get them started, but have to go to store for more soil and some sand. He was sooooooooo nice, and long pages of info.
Do you need to be a member of the Hibiscus Society or will they send them to interested gardeners?
No...you don't have to be a member. I sent a few dollars for postage.
tiG,
Yes, he is a very nice man..lots of info. Wasn't that cool they way he marked all the seeds.

A little update on my T. Hibiscus seeds.

GLory, are these the ones from the H. society? were they already nicked, I read, but put them down while doing web work and need to get them started. did you soak them?
So Glory..........Kyle said it can take years for them to bloom................ do you know how long?
Pardon, here, but if you read Marty's instructions well, he has only nicked the first 2 as an example of how to nick them. He doesn't say to soak them, but an hour or so shouldn't hurt. He went on to state that if would be 10 to 14 months for them to bloom, with regular fertilizing at first, and heavier as the plant approached the 10 - 12 inch mark.

John, I meant to tell you............that if you take a cutting before the mother plant blooms, this will delay the mother plant's blooming by another year!!

Thanks Eyes....... you know your stuff! I should be alive for that length of time.......LOL knock on wood!
Just a whole lot of mind boggeling research, trials and tribulations Kell!! I urge everyone to try this!! There are so many wonderful sites and web pages out there.

thanks eyes, I tried to read all he sent, but I need glasses very bad, and that small print was very hard to read. I did miss the part where he only nicked the first two. That's why I was asking for clarification.
I'm glad I could help, tiG.............If you have a Dollar General in your area, they have some fairly nice readers for $5.00.

I'm getting new glasses in the next week, finally!!! getting progressive lens, didn't you recommend them over bifocals? that's what I got the script in anyway, thinking you said that.
Yep, as long as you are fitted properly, you shouldn't have any problems. You will be disoriented for a few days though, so be prepared!!

uh oh!! that's how I live regularly lol!!
ok, then you won't even notice. ha

I could never find a seed pod that looked as if it had seeds last year. Maybe this year.
eyes, thanks for the info. I just read your posting about how cutting the main stem will delay flowering. That makes sense. Too late now! Just received my seeds from Mr. Henn also, can't wait to get them started, the crosses sounds so exciting. John

I received seeds from Mr Henn a few weeks ago, about half of them have sprouted and are doing fine. I guess everyone gets different varieties, how fun and what a nice man!
I sent my letter to Mr. Henn too. Hopefully, the seeds will be arriving soon.....can't wait!
Thanks for the wonderful tip about saving stamps for his grandchildren. It just so happens that I received some beautiful stamps from Norway and England recently. Great suggestion!!
I'll list the seeds I receive as soon as I get them. :~)
I had a seed pod mature on a T hibiscus , I'm guessing that is has been atleast four years ago. They are just now blooming. There are three that have bloomed. I have five plants. I don't think I let them dry very long after they were mature. It has been so long that I don't remember for sure. I don't remember how long it took for them to come up. But I think it was the same season that I planted them. Like I planted them in the summer and they came up sometime that summer. It was a red hibiscus but there was also a peach one that was blooming also. This is a soft red. Not bright like the parent plant.
That is the only time that I ever had a seed pod form on one. It was in the winter time in my sunroom when it was blooming. Linda
Wow what a pretty color!
