mailing seeds ???

Hobart, IN(Zone 5a)

A friend mailed me some Datura metel (hardy to zone 7, I believe. I am in zone 5) seeds last week. The temps were freezing here. They came from Texas and she said that it gets below freezing there from time to time. They were well packaged in a bubble wrap envelope. Will they be Ok or is there a chance that the freezing temperatures harmed them?

You should be fine,I will start mine 4or5 weeks before last frost,I like a little jump-start,Datura is a tough plant,If you have not had them you should know they are poisonous,I have had them for years and have never had a problem with them,They are a very nice plant, let me know if you would like to try another kind.Root.:)

Yes - Datura seeds will be fine. They re-seed like crazy here in my zone 5.

Thanks Root! I was hoping they'd be Ok. I do know that they are toxic. I have this one, and it's one of the favorite plants in my garden. It reseeds itself, too much if I'm not careful. Do you have a different variety? I'd love to try another and do have some seeds to trade.

poppysue, somehow I missed your post. Will the seeds to the double purple metel survive zone 5a and reseed themselves also, or will I need to replant them ever year?

tiG, thanks for the offer, I'll email you.

root, I put some butterfly weed seeds in the mail this moring for you. What I saved of the eups didn't look like there were any seeds there when I started to clean them up. I'll be happy to send seedlings in the spring instead.
