Woke up to snow

Warkworth, Northumbe, United Kingdom

It must be great to have your own chickens, we get our eggs from the nearest farm. the difference from supermarket eggs is so great. Think the neighbours might object to chickens, it must be great to live away from other houses. Not that I am complaining I have a huge garden.

Southmede,

The difference in the taste could well be due to the breed. The supermarket eggs are often from Warrens (Asa Brown as was), these chickens are little egg factories and quantity doesn't always equal quality, there are a number of these types of hybrid chickens but the newer hybrids tend to have better tasting eggs. Feed type can also make a difference.

Best eggs I ever tasted were from a little bantam Light Sussex we had on one farm. The chickens there were all rescued, the RSPCA man would pop by to see if we'd take them on, usually after an owner had died. They had the run of the entire farm and slept in the calf house. Collecting the eggs was a bit of a nightmare though as this particular hen would fly at you and I've often had a pecked/scratched knee from her.

The up and downside to having chickens is the sheer number of eggs they produce! Mom can't manage to eat around 30 eggs a week, she sells a few to friends and family but still has a glut. Ask your neighbours if they would mind you having chickens, mom's neighbours seem to like them.

Here's our White Stars (Leghorn hybrids) as babies

today has rained very much snow in here! paper delivery is very hard!.......I`ve already delivery half.....107!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Mitjo, I already delivered them all. Took 2 hours.. at least. They hadn't cleard the strees yet. The only good part was there was no sand in streets, so I could use my mini-ski :D Lots of tiny lakes coming down.. snow everywhere. Nicey :0

Thanks Baa for the chick info and the lovely photo, they look very nice. We have thought of having our own hens, and would like to rescue from battery farming.
There are a few things that might stop us:-
Who would look after them when we went away?
How much room would they need?
Would the council complain?
And how many eggs can we eat in one week!!!

Do you keep them in a coop and run?

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

Would love to see your photos Mitjo, if you have time.

No more snow hear but a VERY hard white frost this morning.
Our coldest night yet - can't get anywhere near you guys in Finland, and not even as cold as yours Mark, it went down to -5C.
Mind you, my thermometer is in a sheltered spot, maybe I should put it somewhere more exposed.

You deliver on a BIKE in the snow Mitjo? That must be hard going. Like the sound of your ski Evert, glad the sand didn't arrive lol.

The ski looks fun. Do you use this a lot in the wintertime?

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

I dont use it very much......sometimes when I walk the dog.

Philomel, our weather has really gone wild, yesterday evening it was -1,5 C, in the morning it was -13 C and day before -22 C and day befora that -2 C. Hmm. If it gets over 0 and freezing temps after it again, it will be icy..

My mini-ski is red btw.

I would end up in badages if I tried mini-ski, here it is mild and I have been out moving plantsd around. The leaves of the flowering current is starting to open. Always the earliest to appear in leaf. Helebore is in flower also.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

It was 0 C in the morning. Birds were singing, haven't heard them doing it for a long time.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

You'll soon be able to get out in those flower beds then Mitjo :)

You're getting ahead of me then Evert - haven't sown anything yet

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

Evert....kävitkö katsomassa ne "kasvattamot"?

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

"You'll soon be able to get out in those flower beds then Mitjo :)" LOL, when I go out it really doesn`t look like it......I see snow everywhere.......but I hope that spring comes even little earlier than normal....
I dont have not sown any out/summerplant yet......exotic growing......is fantastic too.......
I`m proud mine Bixa orellanas (I got those seeds from Evert), Gossypium herbaceum which have started to grow real leafs too.......and my mango which I thought to die......because it`s very little seedling and it dropped many leafs....only two abide, but now it makes new leafs.....and those doesn`t drop.......

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Philomel, I just wanted to be early this year ;)

Mitjo, kävin juu katsomassa.

So, you got the Bixas to sprout. Congrats. My Gossypium has started growing the first true leaf! Slowly however... maybe I should plant it to own pot and start something new in the growing pot after I've washed it. Would save some space.

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)
