So Adam,
seeing as how Autumn is gone and it is too late to get them into that frozen ground -
what happens if we pot them up and set them out in the cold?
Or is it better to leave them in the refrigerator and force them in the Spring?
Thanks,
TLC
FAQ for bulbs
The complete answer to this is:
"I honestly do not know."
But, here is some inexpert speculation:
Ultimately, for the bulbs to set root and bloom, they need a cool and dark period. Autumn ~ Winter root set, from what I have learned in books and from some people who post here, is important.
So, what I might do (based on reading and other posts here)is pot the bulbs up in unammended garden soil (no fertilizers, etc.), and keep them in a spot that is 45 F or below. I'd keep them moist but not wet.
I think you will end up with some very attractive potted flowers outdoors in the Spring.
Adam.
. . . and then maybe you could -- transplant them right before they bloom????
I honestly don't know. I've never tried it.
Adam.
Sounds like it would work!
Well if they will bloom in the pots I won't transplant them again. The pots can then be moved anywhere you need a bit of color.
Thank you for clarifying this Adam.

Thanks for the tips everyone! With all my bulbs -- the cost of pots (even the cheaper ones) can add up. So I will probably recycle bottles and cartons and use them as pots and then plant them in the actual ground as soon as I can.
(politely clearing my throat here)
Yes, GV? Out with it ;~)
Adam.
does mean you're gonna pull the thread? if not please do so.
Mark, why do you want the thread pulled?
You've given some excellent advice here, it's worth a lot to beginners and experienced alike!
Yes, it's all been valuable advice here. I've taken advantage of all the advice, some bulbs in the fridge, some planted and in garage lightly watered, some outside and a big tote of them in the garage, sort of dry packed. (I don't know how happy the iris are) and close to the house outdoors, I managed to whack enough dirt to plant some of the smaller bulbs, like snowdrops and fritillarias.
Highjacking thread -- (sorry!) However, at least all the info in this thread has to do with starting bulbs, and even though it might not be directly related to "starting a bulb faq" I still think it is worth saving because of the knowledge it contains. If you want to pull it -- maybe wait until the bulb faq is completed.

Oh! Good grief, I don't know what happened; I did type something after I cleared my throat!
Anyhoo, I was going to suggest that we get the thread back on track, or encourage Mark to start anew. (I'll take responsibility for letting it go so far astray in the first place.)
But back to the original proposition: Mark, we're all ears. And if you need any assistance in pulling together a FAQ, let us know what we can do to help.

If you would like to assemble the FAQ, it will be my pleasure to do editorial work, back and forth with you, to help it be as informative as you would like it to be.
Adam.
Whatever DID happen to the Bulb FAQ? Halloooo, Mark? Philomel? Baa? Adam? It's soon going to be fall then winter again, and we'll be back to "square one" with nothing to show for the year that's passed, other than the lyrics to a song ;o)
I stumbled back across this thread while searching for information on getting Eranthis started from seed (the pros/cons, timing, etc.) Which made me think that a section on bulbs that can be propagated by seed would be a good thing, too.
Left a bunch in the refrigerator all winter and put them in the ground this spring. They have not volunteered to come up yet. Maybe they rotted.
to tell you the truth peole will do what they want to do no matter what advise they are given so I decided not to put the time and effert into doing it. sorry.
Mark,
I would appreciate your input on bulbs. I have learned so much from people on DG who like yourself have much knowledge to share. It probably is time consuming and takes effort. Dave's Garden seems to be about sharing.
These people are so wonderful. Don't let a bad apple or two spoil you!
