Potting up daphnes.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

I spent my morning potting up daphnes I took cuttings of last July. They could have been done sooner but I am just slow getting around. I was pleased with the percentage that rooted. I also took cuttings of the same daphne but about 6 weeks later. The earlier group did so much better, I also used two different depths of trays with the rooting medium. It seems the more shallow trays rooted better.I use pumice as my medium and Dipn'Grow as my rooting hormone. I also potted before Christmas some Korean Lilac that I stuck at the same time as the first daphnes. They were great. I potted them in gallons.

Timing seems to be really critical for some plants. What have some of you experienced?

So you think Daphnes should be taken in July rather than earlier?? Mine are just coming into bloom here in Ga. I have never tried cuttings on this slow growing plant, I have tried unsuccesfully to root low growing branches by layering, this seems to work so well on many other plants like Azaleas, Rhodis and Gardenias.

My daphne odora is just now showing some buds, but the other varieties are showing nothing yet. I haven't tried taking cuttings from daphne odora. I was thinking I might try, but I would wait for new growth. I always take cuttings off softwood cuttings from my daphne burkwoodii and daphne cneorum. What kind of daphnes do you have ,Azalea? The burkwoodii is semi-deciduous. I saw another kind here that has the same shape of bloom but a lilac color( I will go look it up and report back tomorrow on what this one is called) whereas the daphne cneorum or rock daphne is a bright pink. The smells of all these guys is wonderful.

My guess is your season is a little earlier than mine if your are blooming already.

I just have one and it's a Daphne odora and is loaded with buds. I have had it about 3 years and it is still only about 2' high. Sure is a slow grower, but pretty.
