I have heard that some species of orchids cannot tolerate temperatures under 50 degrees F. I have always brought mine into the garage when the nighttime lows are supposed to drop below 50. I have Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, and Phalanopsis orchids. Based on what I have read, I think the dendrobiums are ok down to about 40F, but what about the other two? Am I babying them too much and preventing flowering by putting them in the garage? Here is one of my dends.
Orchids: To bring them in or not to bring them in...
Phalaenopsis are a warm-climate orchid, and should not be subjected to temps lower than about 50-55*.
Catts are a little more hardy, but I still wouldn't let them out in 40* temps.
The only Dendrobium's I have are warm temp dendrobiums, so I can't help you there.
Thanks, Inda. Sounds like I'm doing the right thing by taking them in the garage, then.
