Labor Saving
=============
"The economic and technological triumphs of the past few years
have not solved as many problems as we thought they would,
and in fact, have brought us new problems we did not foresee."
Henry Ford II
What if you had to wash clothes by hand?
What if you had no vacuum cleaner?
What if you had to light a fire and wait for a pot-bellied iron
stove to warm up before you could cook?
What if you had to ride a horse or walk?
What if you had to walk to your best friend's house to talk?
What if you had to write by hand instead of using a computer?
What if you had to heat your bathwater with a fire in a tin tub?
What if you had to light a candle instead of flicking a light
switch?
What if you had to get your food from the garden instead of the
grocery store?
What if you had to read a book instead of getting it from TV?
We have tons of time and labor saving devices.
Yet, we have less free time now than ever.
We have atomic clocks that are accurate to the millisecond.
The clocks set themselves and save us the time and trouble.
Though we can tell time far more accurate, we seem to have far
less of it.
As much as ancestors had to do, shortly after dark, they went to
bed. Often, we are just getting started after dark.
Maybe we need to turn off our labor saving devices for a while,
so that we can get some rest.
Not enough time..??
