I am planning to move to an area within the mountains in a valley near sea level. Winters can still get quite cold, possibly to -35'C.
I haven't yet found the zone, but heard it is about 4, but that may be wrong.
Has anyone tried growing them in cold areas? What happened?
Thanks!
Ginkgo hardiness?
I believe that Ginko Biloba is only hardy to zone 5. I also found documentation on Google about it being a zone 5 tree. That would indicate that it could possibly live to the low -20's but I would think that it could have a hard time with -35. Hope somebody else has had hands on experince with these beautiful trees.
Thanks Ponditis,
I have to say my ginkgo collection is coming with me either way, I just hate to see them die. I also read Z 5, but I read that they do well in Montreal, which I though was colder than 5. I'll look them up, Thanks!!!
I don't blame you for that decision of keeping your ginko trees. I love them myself even though I don't have any yet. You can also protect them with mulch in the winters and maybe behind fences and shrubs to block the coldest of winds and then you have effectively made a microclimate that would be a little warmer or just less harsh for them. I try to push the limits of my zone too. Good Luck. :)
Ponditis,
Dennis said the temp. got to -35°C which is -31°F or roughly USDA zone 4 (technically, zone 3b since zone 4a only goes to -30°F.)
Dennis,
I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and we have many, many ginkgo trees growing here (we are USDA zone 4a). In our climate, Ginkgoes are not hardy until they reach about 4' tall. (a little over one meter tall). If your trees are shorter than that you will want to protect them until they get to 4'. I know of people who live in USDA zone 3b who are growing ginkgoes, but they need some winter protection and in that zone the tree grows slower than it normally does (and ginkgoes are slow growing trees as it is).
I don't think you will have any problem growing ginkgoes in your new location.
Good luck,
Mike
Thanka Mike. It seems that you have found the borderline for ginkgos, I wish someone knew the zone for this area. I have heard 3-5, but it is not 3 I am sure. There are no ginkgos and the nursery says they are not hardy, but they aren't a very knolwedgeable group. Time will tell- Dennis
go to the USDA site and type in the zip code for the area and you will find the zone. Good luck.
Since Dennis is in Brittish Columbia, in Canada, he won't have a "zip code".
Canada's growing zones differ slightly from the USDA zones. I did a search on Google http://www.google.com and found this zone map for Canada:
http://sis.agr.gc.ca/cansis/nsdb/climate/hardiness/ph2000webmap.html
I hope this helps...
Mike
LOL just another "blond moment" :~)
Mike, THANKS SO MUCH. That is the best hardiness zone map I have ever seen. It is so specific it is crazy.
I could spend all night looking up different towns!
Dennis, did you find the town that you are moving to? I am curious as to what it said for lowest and highest temperatures.
Yeah, I'm curious what zone you will be moving to, too. Does it look like your Ginkgoes will survive okay?
Thanks,
Mike
