What can be done about someone who rips people off?
When I read Happyoma's post, I thought for sure I was one of the people she was referring to...But I went thru my e-mails and found her e-mail confirming receipt of package.. whew.....for the life of me, I couldnt rememeber....my heart started beating, I started sweating a cold sweat....
I thought for sure I would die on the spot...
Evert, Canada Post does loose stuff especially at this time of year. Email the people you sent stuff to and maybe they will send them again to you. Canada Post is so,so slow at this time of year. I sent a letter to Cala from British Columbia and it took almost a month to get to Tennassee from here. Yours may be still on their way. How long has it been?
Ehm, about 7 or 8 weeks for the BC and a month for the Halifax one?

I live in the country and our mail person was really willing to take my packages to the PO and weigh them for me and mail them too. Recently she was caught with several packages of things and letters that contained money. It seems she was watching what was being sent on a regular basis from certain people and she ended up stealing things from several of us on the route. I have been busy making good on some of my trades that she stole as she really liked my garden and had told me that she was doing similar things with hers. I hope the Lord will forgive her and that she will get the treatment from a qualified therapist for her acts of desparation. Sometimes my mail has also been delivered to other people on the route and I may or may not receive it later from those people (mostly this happens when a substitute takes the route). I sure hope our new mail person can do a much better job. I do not need this stress added to what I have been going through with putting my Mother in the hospital and then a nursing home this past week along with my health problems and other stuff that is going on in my life. Some of us are honest people and have every intention of following through with the trades and then life gets in the way.

Ponditis, that is just terrible. Her willingness to weigh and mail your packages would certainly be an unusual level of service! Now we know why she was so 'helpful'. And I know you would have been happy to share from your garden, all she needed to do was ask, not intercept your trades!

Evert, My Mom sent me a parcel from New Brunswick to BC which is about 4000 miles over a year ago and I haven't received it yet. I don't know where they go. A month from Halifax at this time of year isn't unreasonable. I'd still email the people, I'm sure they'll make good if they can.The Halifax trader I know from here is an excellent trader. Email me if you want.
Yes Pardancanda, I would have gladly shared my garden as my thing matured so I could have starts. I even would have helped her to design her own personality into the garden. This is the second mail carrier that would weigh our packages. The last one was wonderful to us and in 12 years I never suspected anything was in the wrong with her. I will from now on take my packages to the PO even though it is a struggle for me physically. The ramp at the PO is so steep!
Brug, I know they both are good traders, they haven't stopped answerign emails or anything. Just don't like what your post does, if this is common.. :(

Something similar happened to me at GardenWeb. The guy is a member there, but I've never seen him post. I was curious & looked for his user name here & found it, but he's not active/not a paying member & can't post.
He contacted me through the GW as an e-mail. He saw what I was offering & said he had the plants I was seeking, which are pretty hard to come by. I felt something was amiss from the start. I sent him 12 items by way of signature confirmation so I'd know he got it, but after no replies to certain e-mails & lengthy waits between others, & then an excuse about financial troubles, & a couple weeks later, I got a box of plants. Only they weren't the plants he promised & what I was excitedly expecting. I got plants I specifically told him I did not want & do not like.
I guess I should be glad that he sent anything at all.
To date I haven't received a reply e-mail about the wrong plants being received, etc.

Maybe it's about making baby steps and building a trading relationship or getting a referral.
I don't have anything of value really, but if I did, I'd probably be more inclined to trade something valuable only with someone I'd traded with before or with a good track record. I think if you scan through here, seeing things like Mail Call, etc. - you get a good idea of who is an honorable trader.
That's really one of the benefits of this whole site - gives us the chance to get our feet wet, get to know people and make the right trades.

This strikes a chord with me because it's this time last year that I had a batch of really bad trades. I've done very little trading this year due to that. As I said at the time, it's not the loss that bugs me but the fact that, had the other person asked for SASE, I'd have given them freely. I try not to deal with dishonest people and that is what we are talking about here.
As it happens several packages I've sent this year haven't made it to their destination in the US, I feel terrible that someone has sent me something and my half of the trade has gone missing. I will be trying to make them up in the New Year but I can't do anything if the package disappears other than try my best.
I personally don't use mail call, it's a good forum but I'd rather keep it private, email when the package was sent and when it's partner arrives. I think it's only ever been used once as a post to me, this means if I do post up a trade list again that there is very little info about my trading efforts, it also helps stop a whole bundle of emails requesting trades that I'm unable to cope with. If a ratings system were implemented (which has been discussed) I wouldn't trade, it's too open to abuse. I've recently dealt with someone on Ebay that threatened me with a negative comment/refusing to sell (the auction ended just 12 hours prior to that email and all requested information had been sent directly the auction ended), he claimed I'd sent him no such email and he'd sent me 3 emails in that time (which I'd never received). Fortunately I was online to deal with it there and then, I won't deal with that Ebayer again though. Never underestimate people's ability to be unfair or nasty!
At the end of the day my golden rule is never to send anything I can't afford to give away, not even for a promise of rarities, because that's exactly all it is, until the package gets here... a promise.
To avoid having people say they didn't receive the package I use delivery or signature confirmation.
i let myself get sent to disney over seeds, lololol.... i sent a guy about 1000 seeds, and six weeks later he posted a request hunting the seeds that he "had and was sending me". they weren't even special, just sages of his choice....i really didn't think it was inappropriate to ask him why on the forum, lolol... he sent back about 1/4 of the seeds.
nowadays, it seems i have so many trading friends and so many plants i don't trade with people i don't know.

I too was sent to Disney over trades. I would NEVER go back there after meeting so many REAL garderns here at DG. I LOVE it here and am actually THANKFUL for the free trip, LOL. I have met so many people here that have become real friends, not just someone that wants what you have.
yes, toadlily, this is a very friendly place. it's amazing how many DGers just hop in their vehicles and head off to meet others. my mom and her dh lived in grandview a couple of times but i was only there once long ago.
well, it sounds like there is hacker out there. He is finding every way he can to get plants for free or for practically nothing.
One way you can protect yourself besides the return card with the postal service, is to ship UPS and get a tracking number to e-mail that number to the recipient. That way he can check on its progress and you can check to see if he got it.....
After a while, we end up trading with davesgarden friends well known to us. I remember setting up the secret hosta trade last spring, and noticed that I had personally traded with EVERY participant! So many traders outdo themselves sending generous trades, that if there is one that 'falls through the cracks' I feel it can be shrugged off. Happy trading!
I really think this thread should go in the trash heap now, I think we all got the message, to be careful who you trade with.
