here's the brine recipe ... http://davesgarden.com/t/160548/
will keep u posted when plans are finalized. i will email u. am excited myself. i sure would love to meet everyone. perhaps another Texoma roundup in Spring ;)????
I know I'm nuts
Texoma is hours away from me. It takes a looooooong time to drive across Texas. But San Antonio is the other direction, and some of the people who didn't go to Texoma might be more southerly. It will be fun to plan and anticipate.
whatever, as long as it is Texas roundup, so i may have the chance most of u Texas residents :)! will email u, least we be branded to hijack this thread.
Ok S, Looks like MVR couldn't come up with rootball recipe ,So I guess I'll have to stop when I'mm done chewing on these leaves,LOL! You better hope the ham turns out cause I may have to run down an get some Rice!
Happy T Day to all! Root
When MaVie said that the center was like palm heart, I figured I was a dead duck. So, you aren't going to eat the whole thing now, eh?
rootball an leftover ham ,maybe some kind of cassarole? maybe redbeans an rootball? Turkey ala rootball?not enough leaves for rootball an rice,I can't believe I can even mention food right now
Me either, so leave that poor rootball in the soil and eat real leftovers for today. Not too many times a year that we get this kind of food, at least not at our house. I'm going prone for a while. Only way I can think of to get this food settled in for the night.
RDR... the leaves are only in cooking, like u would use aluminum foil. my bad! i failed to mention to discard leaves after cooking the recipe u prepared. the leaves are used only to protect the dish from burning when broiling or roasting. one never eat the leaves. discard the leaves when done cooking. u don't eat the aluminum foil when u use it in cooking. same principle LOL!!!
AWWHHH MaVie I wus funnin Brugie, she knows I dont have the heart to munch her baby, Even thou some of them recipes sound mighty temptin.I was told not to eat the leaves by my friend from Korea,Guess I have to wait till my co op naners come in. S also knows how stuffed I am right now.Dr.
Stuffed isn't really a good description of how I felt last night. How about miserable. Feel pretty good right now. Could probably eat all over again today, but would use a little more common sense next time. :-)
I am eating red salmon caviar on scrambled eggs this AM........... too good!
There ya go Kell,scrambled eggs,rootball!
Kell, that does sound good. How is caviar for cholesterol? I know the eggs are bad.
Doc.....you be careful with that rootball. LOL....
LOL Brugie, I do not know............. it is fish eggs so they must be OK!
Well, I am off to go shopping with my DH. We are going to buy some great champagne, some live dungeness crab and some sour cream. We are having another private party for our anniversary tonight. Tom is making crab cakes. My favorite dinner......... 3 kinds of caviar with good French champagne and then crab cakes with champagne for the main course. I may even cheat have a nice dessert tonight............
Happy anniversary Kell,If you splurge on that desert, try Rootball ala mode, been told it's to die for.
Well, Happy Anniversary. Hope you two have a great night together. I'll toast you with my glass of wine tonight.
There are coconuts for sale on E-bay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2084874392&category=20534
Didn't Wilson throw a sprout a while back? Poor guy is probably feeling very inferior right now if you have them sitting together. :-)
I currenly live on the Amazon River in Brazil, and if a ripe coconut drops on the ground it has a relatively good chance of germinating. In my yard in my house in Fort Lauderdale, FL I have 3 coconut trees, two yellow malayan dwarfs and one green malayan dwarf. The two in the front yard have been there since 1982 and are now around 30 feet tall. Since I am not around there much and my son does a terrible job of yard mainataince a fair amount of ripe coconuts drop off the trees and of these a few of them sprout, maybe one in a hundred I would say. They grow pretty fast and within 5 years at the most are bearing fruit. I have never intentionally tried to germinate one, but of course the odds of germination would be much better.
I don`t know if this helps any. But, unless you live around where there are a lot of coconuts grown it would make sense to me that it would not be to easy to find a nut that is viable.
dk
hi donk, welcome to dg. I envey you walking around in the Amazon.
Hey ,when you're in Florida ,if I send you money for postage ,can you send me a sprouted one?????
CC....LOL what are you going to do with a 30 foot coconut???

I'm replacing my wallpaper with this one, beauty shot!I had your orange bird of paradise on,and I think we found it at the GH today,I hope the bloom will open so you can ID it for me.
I wish I worked where you do Kyle! And you have parakeets that fly free there? In nature they fly in huge flocks.......... how many do you have? All colors? Do they breed?
thanks
Thanks for the welcome. I would say that if you had a coconut in a green house you would need a multistory one in due time. As to sending a sprouted coconut if there is one next time I get to Florida I will see about that. As to palms in a greenhouse you might try Euterpe edulis - Acai a favorite palm grown here in Amazonia. They get over 30 feet too, but grow in clumps similar to areca palms and you can cut out the trunks when they get too big. Acai is the main palm that commercialized palm hearts are taken from. This is one of prettiest palms that I know.
You could check this site out for palm seeds.

Oh my goodness Kyle............I just love that picture! They are so pretty and what a great way to have them............they must be so much happier be able to fly free and in a flock than spend their life in a cage. Was it an accident that got them started?
Hey Root...........eat your heart out.......... think of all that parakeet doo. LOL

That must make for some dramatic turf fights above your heads! LOL
Is the public invited in here Kyle?
All it takes to get in is a very few bucks. I think they might have raised or at least talked about raising the admission fee. The time to really visit is in the spring or summer when all the outside flowers are blooming. It is along the river and quite a nice looking place. Of course, you need to tell someone there that you would like to speak to Kyle Courtney and then you get a full tour, greenhouses and all. Renee and I sure had a great time and Kyle is so full of knowledge that we really did learn a lot while we were there. Biggest problem was that I couldn't go any long. Had to sit and rest. I think we kidnapped Kyle as our personal tour guide for about three hours. Might have been longer.
What is the name of this place where you work Kyle?
Thanks,
TLC
The Des Moines Botanical Center in Des Moines Ia
You can bet I will be down to see it; in fact i will be in Des Moines on Wed. You may get a surprise visitor, Kyle!
TLC I am at lunch from 11 am - 12pm.(1 hour) so either before or after......between 9 am and 3:30 pm.

Gotcha Kyle,
Will try to get over there
