I got your postage and you sent too much. Guess I will have to find some more seeds you may want.
I sure wish I could get a hummer for Christmas!
two hummers
arlene, I'm glad you went to the dr, please take your meds and rest.
Roz,
To get a hummer for Christmas you have to really believe in Santa, you know he is real, don't you !!!!!!! You have to have that child anticipation about Christmas. When you really believe, I mean really believe, magical things happen.
Larry, I must be really believing cause I keep changing the liquid in my feeders!! I noticed that the red passiflora are still blooming, so there still may be a chance, right? The passiflora, I think, is what may have attracted them to my feeders in the first place. That, plus the orange trumpet vine. I will have them this spring, I am sure. Cant't be too far off!
Roz,
I can't think of anyone more than you that I would like to see have a wintering hummer. You probably only need to change the sugar water every 2 weeks or so. I would only put a small amount in the feeder. To really know if you have a wintering hummer, you need to watch your feeder for about an hr 1st thing in the morning and before dark. Wintering hummers only feed 1 or 2 times a hr as compared to rubys that feed every 2 - 3 min. Many people have wintering hummers, but just don't know it. I was just plain lucky in seeing the hummer I have now. Sometimes 2 days pass before I see him. Good luck !!!!! I have almost nothing blooming now. Hummer relies on feeder an insects.

Larry, my hummer or hummers are often at the feeder every 10-15 minutes. i've been changing the water more often, because we have had so much rain, figured it was getting pretty diluted. sometimes a hummer will be back at the feeder in less than 10 minutes.
arlene, your temps are considerably warmer than mine, could explain why they feed more often. Even though I know a good bit about hummers, I realize that the more I learn the less I know. They always seem to surprize me about their habits. Most statements I make are based on personal observations, but I realize their are no absolutes. Hope you are starting to feel better. I finally got rid of whatever I had. I finally got 2 nights sleep in a row.
Glad you are feeling better, Larry; Arlene, hope you are too.
thanks R & L. i still feel like a rag. i was thinking about winter flowers, you probably have them roz, not sure if they go to your zone larry, but the shrimp plants. they bloom here, planted under trees or next to houses, pretty much through winter. i need to figure out why mine aren't blooming. this one lady in town prunes her shrimp plants in spring squared off like a real hedge, makes me smile.
and yes, it has been warm here for a few days, even when it dips into the low 30s it usually warms up to the 60s the next day.
Arlene, my shrimp plant is in a pot on my deck by my feeders, and I think that is another reason I had hummers. It only has one or two blooms on it, but isn't that a bract, like the poinsettia and bouganvillia? Dunno how to make it bloom more. If you get yours to bloom, let me know how you did it. It really did keep blooms on it all summer.

Katrina, will send you my phone #. don't know what is up saturday.
Larry, had 2 hummers fighting over feeder saturday, saw them together 3-4 times.
Just let me know I should be able to stop by!
katrina
Arlene, are both hummers brownish on their backs. Rufous are really mean hummers. I still have mine, saw it before coming to work today.
Larry, i haven't been able to tell. i put a second feeder up close to my window today but haven't been around. one though, i swear looked like a little general. he hopped up on the wire that holds the feeder with his chest poked out and sat for a while. i'm hoping my sis will come over, she has one of those little camcorders that will convert into pics.
one knocked the other off the feeder this morning, thought they would hit the ground but i guess they didn't. have only seen feeder fights a few times.
there are still some flowers around for them in pockets here and there around town and in my yard.
Larry, got a real good look at one today, it's getting green on the top of the head and on the back. trying to get the throat coloration. i wonder if they are siblings. they are really using up the sugar water too. i had just put up fresh feeders when i saw the one at the feeder turn to chase one that was close by. i have a feeder with seats in good position at my window by the computer now, hopefully i will get better looks and maybe a pic.
Larry, just checking about that bander. i am less than 30 minutes off I-75, i am hoping he will be able to come by.
Arlene,
I havn't talked to Fred lately to find out if he will be making the FL run below Tallahasse or not. He must be out of town as I have not been able to get up with him. I havn't seen my hummer for over a week now. He must have left town. When I get up with Fred and he knows for sure that he will be making the FL run, you will need to send me your phone # so he can contact you, private email please. Hope you had a great Christmas and that you are feeling much better. I am much better, but still can not get rid of some sinus problem, just will not clear up.
Larry
