PLease tell me about ABADS? How many are members, pros cons--- anything else I might need to know. Also, how do I start a Brug chapter in my state? (if I need to move this topic let me know)
ABADS
well this one is people that i already know and like. i'm not sure what all they do at abads. i do know 2 of the people from abads from plant trades.
I think all that info is on their site too, not sure

I read some info on the ABADS site--but--I've belonged to other different types of organizations. The other places just let you pay them dues and you received nothing but a membership card.
ABADS has a registry for brugs, has a seed evaluation committee and other things. They send out a newsletter and just had a calendar photo contest.

Cala, how do they evaluate seeds? do you mean once they are grown? i think that's a hard one too, cause different brugs do well in different parts of the world.
So far it's sounds like I should join one of the groups here at Dave's. I need info, guidance & nuturing with the raising of the brugs... I want to start a local chapter here.
Cala are you a member? If so, do you think it would be beneficial for a somewhat newbie?
Sounds like tiG and Arlene aren't? Or do I need to join that "club" kell was trying to put together...Grin ))))))?
if you join one or the other or none, as long as you stay at DG, you're in good hands.
Dr, i got lost on what tig and i aren't? and don't forget i am a charter member of the blonde club!
Arlene-I guessed you weren't a member of ABADS---maybe the not "assuming" rule applies here.. Forgive me if I was wrong --I've been breathing soil fumes and I dyed my hair..Grin. I don't understand about registering hybridized brugs-- Is the only Brug organization that is authorized is ABADS?
they are the official registry. just like with any other plant, there are different organizations and groups.
i told you guys i was blonde, didn't figure it out! i'm not, some people from here are i think. abads says that, but i think we have a good enough group we can do our own. someone smarter than me will have to explain but that's what they put on their site a couple of months ago. personally, i'm gonna name mine what i want, when i want!!!! so were you covering blonde or going blonde?
((((Tonny, our hero))) good to see you! desert rose, do not look at his home page here, he looks just like james bond.
Try covering gray. I knew about some organizations that register plants--But I didn't understand the significance of ABADS being the only place. I didn't know if ABADS was like the "ELKS LODGE" or "MOOSE LODGE"--to many chiefs and not enough indians. I apologize now if I offended any Native Americans or members of any Lodge groups--I didn't know any other way to explain it. And I am part Native American.
The registry of brugs is brand-spankin new ... insn't it?
Poppysue, yes, it's new. I think it's a great idea.
Desert Rose,BGI gets my vote.Check them both out and then choose. One or the other or both if you feel obsessive!
Maybe I should test them both? Anybody else up for it?
desert rose,as gone2seed stated you are certainly free to choose one, both or none. BGI wasn't started as a Brug site competition but as a friendly site for people that enjoy growing and hybridizing these beautiful plants. We are working very hard to make it enjoyable by all.
Thank you. I really appreciate everyones input. There is soooo much information on the web. It's very hard to understand all the info--mostly if you try to go out of your little backyard brug world into the great big forest of brug info.
This has been a great thread for me to understand brug history better! Sounds like BGI is based in Europe (Denmark?) and is ABADS in Greenland then?
Isn't there a gardening "parent" organization that would "bless" or approve organizations like this for new species and hybrids within? Excuse my ignorance, please.
Oh, and yes Tony does look like James Bond ~ LOL! I took a look at his home page. Guess he'll be busy this weekend with his upcoming release and all :)
Morph, both are based in the US with Euro officers. And I think that both were started for the love of the plant.
All I have to say is LOL!!!
Too much to digest right now, Kell.
"eyes"
Desert Rose, I failed to answer your question earlier, yes, I belong to ABADS.
Cala, you'll have to explain it better to me. speaking only for me, what ever i grow is for me and mine, i don't intend to let anyone in abads tell me what i should think about my brugs. is there an advantage to having a brug certified? are you going to let them have cuttings of your seedlings?
Yes Cala, please explain it to us all.
I'd like to know what the hybridizer gains by registering his/her brugs. I know that they do not gain financially by doing this unless the brug is patented. Certainly the name of the brug is safe, but I thought someone said that just having them listed in the PDB would do that too.
well, I'm not registering mine. I have too many emails saved where the 'experts' told me that if I publish them on the web, that protects my name. after the fiasco where we were all trashed here on DG last year, and never got an apology for, I won't join.
we've offered BGI only as an alternative to post pictures, names and for fun.
I think the point is that you want to protect your brug not so much your name.
not my name:) my brugs name, that's what I meant. and that's the info I have saved, that by publishing the brug with the name and date, it is protected.
You were all trashed??? Awwwww...I always miss the fun!!! :o)
Bruno
but who cares about a brugs name. if you are a hybridizer it is your brug that means everything to you. you pick your name in 10 minutes, a good brug cross can take years to make.
you want to register your brug to protect the brug as yours in the official registry so no one else that comes up with the same brug later can take the credit!!!!
but of course we all just do this for fun and for the love of it, not for money or glory so it should not matter to us.
I think maybe there should be a disclaimer on Daves for the newbies in ref. to this topic. I hadn't realized this would start up such a ..ahh toasty discussion. I looked up info about ABADS on other garden sites & I don't understand who made ABADS "The US Queen with a septor"....so to speak "Is the Queen qualified to be the queen?" --- it sounds like not by some people. Which I'm really ok with ---This is the US--not a monarchy.
If a person decides not to register a brug-- can someone else claim it and register it under their name? It appears there is a lot more european "experts" than in the US. No offence to everyone. Monika, Tonny, Ludger...etc. Are they involved in ABADS? Geez-- I really only wanted help with starting a charter here in my State--I guess it will be a group of one. Obviously there is more history to this topic that I just don't know about. I love freedom of speech don't you?
oh bruno I forgot to include you with the "experts"---Forgive me. I meant no offense to any royalty, Queens, experts etc
I think we should invite ABADS here to explain this coup to us. I think this is big stuff if you are a professional hybridizer just like the rose registry is. And I wonder if you can patent a brug if you are not the first one to register it. It would be like stealing.
