the light ones just opened.
kylespink pods
Your place must be heaven right now. Great brug pictures. Is it too cold for the fragrance to be strong at night or maybe too cold to go out and enjoy would be more appropriate? So pretty.
Sooooo pretty! Another one that I am hopeful of seeing bloom next year.
Very Pretty, you are very lucky still having blooms.
Very nice picture Arlene. I can't wait to see some of your seedlings in bloom. I have a feeling your going to come up with some absolute stunners if you haven't already and I have just missed them.
Just picked the first pod, Brugman. i sure hope you and yours are doing well!!!!
so pretty in pink Arlene!!! nice to see so late in november!
Beautiful Arlene. I may loose mine tonight. Supposed to get down to 33 and their is no breeze to prevent frost. Grrrr my Frosty and Misty Valley Pinks have buds as well as Whisker, Jean Pasco, Ollie, Jamacia Yellow, Dr Suess, and monster white still has over a hundred budsnot yet open. Oh I could cry!!! I guess it is my turn for brugs withdrawls now LOLOL!!
Donna,
There was frost all on the ground here last night but it didn't seem to bother anything.......Dr Suess around the Gazebo is just a pretty as it was yesterday. Hopefully we'll get through this cool spell with no problems.
Thanks Arlene,
Everything is going well indeed although life is moving at a very fast clip right now for me. Just trying to catch a glimpse of all the great hybrids from time to time on this forum and there have been some beauts.
did you see this one? http://brugmansias.com/go/53940/
I have to admit that the computer I am on right now has very poor graphics. I did take a look at the picture though and from what I can tell it is an aurea x candida type hybrid. Sure wish I could see the calyx better on this computer as it appears to have teeth on it which is more indicative of its aurea parentage and the elongated calyx of course being from its candida background. Is this one a pink? It really is hard to tell, but I will access a better computer in a few days if not sooner to take a closer look at this one as the shape looks promising even with this poor old thing.
I've got printed pictures I've got that I keep meaning to mail to you. This is the most beautiful brug I have. it's peach colored, that's why the name. Did you do any Butterfly x Whiskers crosses??? it just got darker and darker, it's my very favorite.
Yippee for you Arlene! How tall is it?
Tig,
I did some Butterfly x Whiskers crosses, but alas they did not take in time for the move. I am going to be doing some pretty redundant crosses for the most part here soon. Mostly Butterfly x Rosabelle and Butterfly x Ecuador pink. Of course I will make the crosses both ways, but I really don't expect to come up with anything extra ordinary from these crosses as much better crosses have already been made. Just hoping to find something worth while to work with perhaps from those crosses as its so hard to get descent hybrids to work with. Of course I have strong suspicions I will be begging many of you for your hybrids once I can start growing a few more hybrids again. As for now I am limiting the hybrids I grow for lack of space and working mainly on seed production for growing out at a later time. That and I just love Brugs. I don't know what my yard would be without them. I do have some Sophora secundiflora setting seed in the yard right now though so perhaps I'll have some purple flowers to look at soon enough as well.
Eric, I have a package going out to you this Saturday. watch for it!!
Brugman, you have no idea how much you are truly missed.
DR, do you mean the kyle's pink? it's 6 foot or so. this is brugman's hybrid, i have several seed pods on it a foot long. they are kind of funny, the first 2 inches are skinny and without a seed in them, then the get fat. somebody needs to have a seed pod class, lol.
Ok tiG, Arlene,Calalily,Glory, brugie, brugcrazy, Brugmansia and all of the rest of the "Pros"--When you try to cross do you have a set list each one of you is working on or do you post a suggestion list somewhere? If this is a dumb question I'm full of them:0)
(ain't no pro!! LOL) but 'they' always say pick two with traits you'd love to pass on and build with. That's how I made my crosses this year. I love aurea traits, so I used them mostly for the pollen.
if I couldn't use aureas for both:)
not dumb, i am glad you are interested, the more hybridizing, the quicker we'll get more varieties to lust after. the US was behind in aureas for a long time, so i think doubles with color and aurea hybrids are what we most want. we use what we have blooming. i am sure someone will come by and give you better info.
DR, no set way of doing it. We all get anxious when our blooms start appearing and make the best crosses we can. I'm like you, just getting started, but I did read that it is best, but you can do it anyway you wish, to cross pinks with pinks, yellows with yellows, etc. Brugman got some great peach colors by doing yellows and pinks, so just dig in and come up with some beauties for the next year.
I guess I should clarify--Do you get together and decide who tries for whatever or does it work out that more than one of you is working on the same one without the others knowing? I'm afraid to ask anything after the ABADS episode . I don't what this to cause a "discussion" again
DR, I think we mostly work on our own agendas. You never know what that special cross will be. a lot of us made the same crosses this year, so I know something special will be around next year
I am not totally sure, but believe that most of us just do what we feel like doing. Sure, with the selection of brugs that we have had, there are bound to be some of the same crosses, but we have all been close enough that it has not caused any hybridizing problems. First guy out of the gate wins I guess. :-) In coming years there will be so many more good brugs to work with and the fun is really just beginning.
DR, we work with what we have blooming, and people sometimes share pollen. some of us have the same crosses going now. we also sometimes share seeds of a cross. i don't think it's a competition, not that i know of.
Brugie--I really just need my "stumps" to make it till spring. Do you all run around in your back yards with little black & yellow leotards and pipe cleaners on your head singing "BUZZ BUZZ"? Boy! what a visual I've got going now! LOLOL
well, if it's a competition, I'll take last if you guys will share yours!! LOL!. I'm doing good to get my pods to stay on right now:(
No I didn't mean a competion -more like a science assignment each one of you has been given.
Desert Rose,
I just try to cross hybrids with traits I'd like to see blended. I think I am starting to learn a bit though from everyone posting pictures and asking questions. I used to primarily try to cross pinks to yellows and pinks to pinks while trying to also cross one species to another...ie versicolor to candida or merfacht to versicolor, etc. Trying to make sure that none of my hybrids were of any pure species or pure color back ground for the most part, but as with everything you make crosses and then you re-evaluate your plan. Now, I think I am going to focus my efforts more on pinks to pinks and candida's to aurea types. This plan will most likely change as well after I've made a few crosses. I would rather say I just try to put pretty on pretty and hope I get something other than a white hybrid. I try to select seedlings that bloom in the first year and are also in color, but that too has changed. I think I was all too happy with a few minor improvements and as I see more and more first year bloomers my personal criteria for saving a hybrid is growing more selective by the moment. As it is, the best hybrids I have seen have always been from someone elses seeds. I just try to have a bit of fun from time to time and my fun happens to be seeing new Brug seedlings bloom. Whether those hybrids are from my own seedlings or someone elses dosn't much matter, just as long as they are improvements. I have to confess though that large numbers of blooms and repeat bloomers are among my favorites as well. Hybrids that bloom in the first year and have multiple bloom cycles in that first year are amongst my favorites as well.
No competition with me. I just do what I do because I enjoy it. I'm trying to visualize myself in those leotards. Nope, you wouldn't want to see it.
Eric, you don't give yourself near enough credit!!!
Tig,
Mail takes a few extra days to get here most times and this is Thanksgiving weekend so mail will most likely be postponed to Monday if it is sent priority mail. Just a thought. Thanks though and I sure hope its pictures your sending me as I think they will travel better this time of year. Of course I am as always a worry wart. Still, I am dieing to see some pictures of some of your hybrids.
DR - some of us like certain species - I love sanguineas, they do well where I live - but they will only cross with arboreas, which I waited 3 years to get my hands on. Now I hear that Ludger has made an impossible cross with an aurea. This is outstanding news -
My second love is aureas - they're strong, stand up to weather - and you have to love that.
My next is versicolors - they're just so gorgeous, blooming in huge waves of colour.
What I've learned from the experts here is to cross strength with strength. Be it colour or bloom size.
If you have a wonderful bloom and nothing of equal quality to pollinate - freeze the pollen until you do.
Growing out crosses is time comsuming and expensive so you might as well have an idea of what you're aiming for. Each pod has hundreds of seeds - they could all be different within the same pod - think of the R series.
DR,
I too am trying to cross a sanguinea with A Golden Lady,
Species and Shredded White....who knows what will pop-up maybe something that looks like it belongs in an outer space movie. LOL
I like tiG love the Aurea Brugs and I'm always running around with artist brush in hand and pollen container...my DH calls me "The pollinator."
maybe we should call you the Biloxi breeder/??? LOL! sorry, it's late:)
tiG--that's how Kell and I start late at night--then we get reallyyyyy goofy...LOL
tiG...we quit breeding around here 32 years ago. LOL
uh oh--This is going into a "kell Komment Area"
