I also had zero BD (before dave's).My first ones came from Arlene,Gloria and Tig.Since then many more from other generous DG members. This year I have been able to pass some along to other newbies and send a few back to those who helped me get started.
Gingerlily was right about the Florida swap.I brought home a truck load!
My thanks to all of you who helped me get started.Anything in my garden is yours.
Pre DG, how many had brugs?
Brugmansia caught my attention the 1st visit to northern Calif. area Dec. '98. since then, i've been in search to find and buy brugs cuttings. i got involved buying on ebay several cuttings by color, as no seller seemed to know the specie name they sell, except by color. there were one too many i bought; due to lack of knowledge i have always killed or rotted the cuttings i bought, with the exception of a few.
Spring of 2002, i finally managed to learn how to grow them properly. out of more than 20 cuttings, i've bought from ebay, i managed to grow 2, which to this day, is very much alived. with tons of advice and reading from all posted information on brugs on this forum finally it is slowly sinking in. thanks to all knowledgable member of DG, i am able to increase and grow properly the 'stock/s' now happily growing in the desert environment.
thanks to my upbringing and culture, i have no one to blame for my love of plants. i take full responsibility for my plant addiction. i am far more greatful to the wonderful members whose been ever so kind to share their lovely plants with me.
I got bit by the brug bug a few years ago, now thanks to DG I have been bit again. I have gold, white, pink. Then I find out they have named varieties. I finally got 2 variegated (P&C/Sunset)and a shreded white.
Now I wanna trade all mine in for variegated, doubles, named etc.....I will absolutely hold my breath till I can get my hands on a Snowbank my latest to die for........LOL OK only kidding, I'm not really holding my breath but I catch it everytime I see a post with a picture of it.
I even stole one of my daughters paint brushes to try polinating.
OK I admit it I'm BRUG OBSESSED.....but I wouldn't have it any other way.
DG's the greatest....
This thread was a lot of fun.
Yes, Brugie, it is interesting reading.
It was my brug love that lead me to DG. I was so taken back by my first brug, a Charles Grimaldi, that I was searching the web for more information. That search led me to Daves. I didn't know anyone else that gardened to the extent that I do - - and was starting to wonder if I was just obsessive complusive. Since being here at Daves, I have been humbled numerous times by the super gardeners found here. Thank goodness for DG! Nat
Some day Kell...we will meet.
I probably missed this thread because of the computer problems, I had.
I agree, it was a lot of fun!
I had a Dr. Seuss, and Frosty Pink and a suaveolens yellow prior to finding gardening forums. After those initials ones, I purchased a double white and a shredded white (that turned out not to be a shredded white) on Ebay, and the race was on!
I joined DG on Jan 25, 2003. I didn't know what a brug was. On Feb. 20th, less than a month later, I was the first to respond to an offer by Glory for an offer of brug cuttings for a newbie. I received them about the same time I received over 100 mixed brug seeds from Farmgirl21. By April I had over 50 plants waiting to be planted outside. Today, less than a year later, through the generosity of DGers I have over 35 varieties, about 50 large plants in the greenhouse and another 50+ cuttings rooting in my work room, not to mention the 30+ packets of seeds waiting for germination. Am I an addict? YES. Do I intend to change? NO. Did DG influence me? YES. All the loving support and advice of DGers here and Germany has made this a wonderful hobby to put joy into my life as well as those who stop to enjoy the lovely brugs I plant out. Thanks to DG and all of you. Padre
I didn't have any and still don't have any, but this forum is so active, I had to see what the excitement was all about!
I had none & within 5 months I have over 20. I am so, so addicted. It's scary but I check the brug forum before I even have my coffee in the morning! Sick Eh?
sick sick sick! I do too B2B...
I had never seen or heard of brugs until I found DG, I don't know why there aren't any around here, I need to do something about that!!!! I think they should be in every yard!
I get to blame Brugie!! I had none until this summer. Now I have......... well let's say more that 1 and most of them came from...... I needed something besides that hanging plants to feed and water every day. Keeps me harmlessly amused. Still waiting for the first flower. Here is my first baby. She is a big girl compared to what she was in July. I am hoping that the polka dots about to burst into bloom will make her jealous and give me a bud Lol.
She is looking good. I'm sure you will have blooms before too long. Once that Y arrives, it usually only takes about a month. Don't forget to take pictures. If I have to take part of the blame, I at least want to see the end result!! LOL!!
I, also, didnt know what a brug was until I joined DG. This spring I finally worked up the courage to ask for a few cuttings which Glory supplied. I almost lost them several times (due to ignorance and/or carelessness) but luckily, they were resilient enough to grow up in spite of ineptness on my part. Then Cala sent me a few more. By that time I was feeling a little more confident, and managed to bring them to their glory of beautiful flowers to enjoy..and even got the bonus of finding out that one of the plants pollinated without my knowledge..now I have pods out there, getting bigger weekly. My thanks to all of you that have informed me, taught me, guided me along this brug path, without even knowing I was here...diligently reading all the advice you were sharing with everyone. I am a little shy about jumping into a thread like this, so may not always comment, but I really do appreciate y'all..

hmmm----------------stumbled upon this forum last fall/winter?----I was shocked, I thought I was in love with roses-------but it was just a crush lol. I cant tell you how hard it was to sit back, post a little --wait---post some more before broke down n put on my most humble begging hat and ASKED---nayyyyyy--------GROVELED even,----and to my delight------i was bombed with cuttings from total strangers----but even more importantly I was actually missed when i went thru kinna of a miserable winter and stopped posting for awhile. since then i have watched ppl reach out to old friends--and-complete strangers---not just with cutting *tho they are generous beyond compare* but with prayer------humor---and I suspect and have even experienced tears. and so yes my hormones must still be screwey cuz now Im all mushy :) but Merry Christmas guys :)this is a great place to hang my hat. cheryl
I had one Yellow, and One white single that I started with four years ago and did not know they even had names, or that other colors existed.. then I decided that I would try to find out what they were called and was able to get some cuttings from Brugie a year later on GW, then I found a double white at a nursery, these past few months have added about 45 cuttings to my brugs and they all have names. I am very grateful to everyone here and BGI (TiG) and everyone there.. Thank you.
I had a white one and of course didn't know what it was. I also had the Double Purple Swirl Datura and thought the two were the same only a differnt varity. But from what I have learned here the White was a Brug, the blooms hung down and the Daturas blooms up.
Both were tagged as Angel Trumpets so that where I got the notion from. The Brug didn't live long it was just tooooo hot that summer and I didn't know how to take care of it. I had it in the broiling sun all day and didnt keep it watered enough.......oh well live and learn.

I was so "into" Native Plant and Xeriscape gardening that I had never paid any attention to Brugs prior to DG. Am anxiously awaiting my first cuttings which are scheduled to arrive today. I can't wait to grow these, and have already hinted to my DH that we are going to need a bigger GH next Fall! I want to thank all of you here who have provided me with help and advice and SEEDS!!! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!!! Gretchen
I don't have any yet. I am expecting a few cuttings hopefully in the next few days. BUT- it was the photos on this forum that did it to me. I was happily obsessed with my oldest obsession old garden roses (try trading for those on GW- not a good scene) and some newer ones like lilacs, peonies, hydrangeas, hellebores, butterfly/and Hummingbird attractors and host plants for butterflies and feeling a few more plant flirtations beginning when during a day when I had a few moments to myself I innocently began browsing the DG forums. You know how you can click on the little photos to get a bigger view...that's what happened. The photos you guys post are ASTOUNDING. I've never seen a brug up close YET!
Please keep posting pictures...lots and lots of photos.
Sheila
I had never heard of Brugs before joining DG this past summer. Not sure I'd even seen one around theses parts. But I now have two (well maybe). Twinlakeschef was visiting Cottosnag back in November and I meet up with them for lunch. TLC brought me a Snow Cone and a Golden Lady (double cream). The Snow Cone is doing good. The Golden Lady is not looking so hot. At first (in water) it started to mush on top so I had to cut it back, and froming reading DG and the brug.org site I figured I better get it in dirt, NOW it is kinda schriveling but I saw simular pic's on one of the threads so I'm not giving in. Gee I'm a little windy today, guess I'll give it a rest now. I am excited to see what happens with my new plants. (I have not showed my husband the pictures I've seen of some of your lovely GIGANTIC brugs...he might think mine will get that big and think I'm nuts LOL)
I love these old threads.
My daughter had a brug. She loved it and had it for several years. Somehow, it died. I was in search of a replacement for her, found some cuttings, went in search of growing information, found DG, and so it began.
My daughter now has quite a few (from me) and I am over-run and still propagating. It's an illness (I love it).
When I started with brugs, white suaveolens forms were the only ones known. A few years later, I paid 30 Marks for a small unrooted PINK suaveolns cutting. Then I added a B aurea White. It grew as large as 15ft before it would bloom.
But its fragrance was heavenly!
BRUGS? What were they?? I had absolutely NO CLUE!! I've gone from zero to over 25....and now am running out of room!!! What a great addiction....just one of many!!!
I bought a Charles Grimaldi and one labeled Shredded White from Logees four years ago and those are all i had until DG. Now i have learned that the SW one is probably B. Species which I like better. And thanks to so many generous people of DG I now have 11 more named varieties and thanks to BGI and tiG I also haave lots of seedlings that I am waiting to see bloom. Donna
I also didnt know what a brug was. I actually did serching on google for seed information, everything lead me to PDB. I would do more searches on PDB, and it kept telling me I couldnt read it because I had to be a member. So I joined. I saw the forum of "brugmansia and friends" and wondered what in the world it was. I went from 0mph to 90mph so fast, my head is still spinning.
I LOVE learning EVERYTHING I can, and reading that I am not the only person who has lost a cutting or seedling, and learning from the experts is worth much more than the subscription fee.
I only had the three older types....but Now,thanks to some very generous folks from DG I have some very promising cuttings :>).
Does anyone know how I might identify the older ones I have?I tried looking at picks & reading the info, but I'm still too green to tell one from another.LOL
Here'a pic of the older yellow
Thanks,
MsC.
Mrs. C. it is hard to tell since there are so many out there, but that color is beautiful. It reminds me of the daffs coming up in the spring. Very pretty and you are lucky to have such a pretty flowering brug.
Thanks Brugie,
I have it in pink white & yellow..but they are older varieties I have had probable 10years maybe more.
I sure love their smell & for me they are easy and almost year round.
MsC
A beautiful yellow, bet the pink and white are also nice.
Lottie those are just beautiful.....I have got to get out to your house and see what all you have........LOL

I had never even seen a brumansia before coming to
Daves. I have always really been into regular gardening and had become active on another site trading seeds. I received some brug. seeds and someone on that site told me I should check out Dave's Garden. Now I spend more time on this site than the other and grow many brugs each year. I still love growing from seed and although all my seedlings turned out white this year, I am going to keep trying for that really special one.........Patricia
About 6 years ago I bought a plant just called "Angel Trumpet" at a local plant auction for $2.50, no one else bid on it! Someone told me I would like it, that's an understatement. I found out about 2 years ago that it was a Dr Seuss, still my favorite.
Then I met Glory who gave me my first OTHER brugs, a Jessie Noel and a Milk & Honey - I was so excited to have different ones. TiG came to visit me and brought me no less that 14 new ones - then that fateful trip to Arlene's really did me in. Since then, a couple of swaps numerous other DG'ers and BGI'ers have contributed to my sickness!
Until I met Cala, I knew nothing of brugs. She mailed me 32 cuttings one spring - I killed all but one! It has flourished and since then, I have received others from kind people such as Jerrodsmom and Brugie and Dave, as well as Rootdoctor and Tracy. It has been a new obsession which I blame entirely on Susie F. She has also fed my addiction to vines and other unusual tropicals. I wonder if that's why I never hear from her anymore - LOL - every time we talked, she would mention another new plant, and I would ask for a start of it!!! Thanks to all who further my addiction to plants!
was wonderin,--but didnt want to nag?? *breaks out her nasal tone* Cala?-----I sure do miss your posts-----we are like frenchfries with no ketchup----? cheryl
I agree!!!!
