looking into the possibility of training some of the branches of my tamukeyama (8 yrs old 4'h x 5'w). Has a beautiful young form but i don't want the branches to mushroom in a fashion that will hide the branch structure of the tree. i'm not thinking of pruning further but of guiding/redirecting some of the weeping branches to give them a slighty more upward trajectory. the goal is not to necessarily create a wider tree but to "lift up the skirt."
i would appreciate any advice you guys could lend.
training my jap. maple 'tamuke yama'?
I cut one by two lumber into lengths long enough to support the branch plus an extra inch, cut a v into one end and a point into the other end, hammer the point into the ground, about an inch, at a slight angle and rest the branch into the v of the lumber. That way it will support the branch while it is growing into that shape. You can also redirect the inner branches with sticks in which you make v's on both ends and wrap them with cotton fabric to soften them. Separate the inner branches with these v's in the right places till the tree is strong enough to hold them on its own.
