Iochroma Cyaneum or is it Iochroma grandiflora ???

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Nobody said anything about cleaning. Hey, this is where the negotiations bogged down before.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

oh................ and just when I thought you had evolved

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL - I've evolved - that's why I try not to clean anymore.

Kell, the acnistis australis is hardy here, zone 8b/9a so would be very hardy at your place. I've never had a problem with mites, bugs anything on any of mine. I find the white is really bushy and large, the purples could be easily trained as a standard. They are also very drought tolerant. I leave them on Denman Island, don't water them for weeks on end, they droop, I give them some water and they're back and happy.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Liz, I can live in a mess if the cooking is great and there are fresh brugs everywhere and a view to kill for.

Gosh, this plant sounds too good Jeanne. Sounds like I must have it!!!! and it won't even need a lighted, heated GH with a fan to survive.

(Zone 7b)

Judith is who sent me the acnistis seeds!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

it is a small world isn't it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Took me a long time to get Iochromas rooted. I tried several ways and finally got some to root in soil under a shade tree. The red rooted much easier than the blue and purple. Took probably 8 weeks to get them rooted. Hope you can find an easier way.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

i have never seen one-if any one has blue ones please let me know!!!! i HAVE to have one-ty kell!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK,what does the red one look like?Is this something I'm gunna die for?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Karyn, here are some pictures of Iochromas. I think the one Kell posted is a Grandiflora. Not sure about anything these days though.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

ok where can you get them???

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

notmartha, I got mine from Kartuz on the web. The red one, I got from Kell. They are not terribly expensive, but the postage kills. I have to say that they did not do all that well for me. Mostly got leggy with occasional bloom. The red one really started to bloom when it got cold. I won't grow them again. For the amount of room they took up, the show was not that good. You might have better luck with them than I did, though.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

how big are the plants from Kartuz? i see so many i want!!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I ordered from Kartuz this past spring. I bought the Wine Red Iochroma - it was in a 3-inch pot. Small but it took right off and was flowering before I was even able to get it outside. It bloomed all summer for me. I wouldn't say it had been loaded with flowers but it seemed like it always had some blooms on it. It's still blooming outside in my greenhouse. I can't seem to get cuttings to root tho!

ok im hooked! thanks

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sue, my red ones rooted in Pro-Mix easily. It was the blue and purple that took so long and most didn't make it.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9a)

Has anyone tried Rhizopon rooting hormone? If you would like to try a some, let me know and I will send you a bit to try. I have had the most amazing luck with it. It is SOOOOO expensive but a little goes a long way. Just drop me an e-mail.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I bought the tablets some time ago. Have never used them on the brug cuttings. Actually I forgot I had them. Have a cutting that needs to be rooted that came in the mail today. Will give the Rhizopon a shot and see what happens. Thanks for the reminder!! By the way, do they have it in powder form now? I better go visit the site again.

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9a)

Brugie, go to muncyrose.com, their e-store and look for propagation. My Brother-in-law is a reseller of thier products. If you would like to try some of the powder, send me your snail mail and I will send you some. So far, we have found it works great with brugs and roses.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks. I bookmarked the site for when I need to purchase more rooting hormone. I'll use up what I have for now. Thanks for the offer. I know this stuff is supposed to be really good.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I was asking the guy at one of the GH's I go to if they had any rooting compound for woody plants,he said the stuff they buy cost 60 bucks for a tiny jar! What could possibly cost that much?I wouldn't pay that much unless I KNOW it works.......Does Rhizopon?

(Zone 7b)

I've never used a rooting hormone that made any difference at all. I'd love to try a sample of the Rhizopon to see if it makes a difference for me.

I'm going to check out Kartuz and maybe get some of the Iochroma plants. The seeds Judith gave me did great, they are small plants now but I haven't had any blooms yet.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Kell, you've got it all wrong---this is neither Iochroma cyaneum nor Iochroma grandiflora, it's Iochroma Wanna-go-live-with-MsBatt. (Both of them are this species, lol!)

Since I ever seem able to actually GROW any of these, all my learnin' is out of a book, but---from all I've managed to read up on these, Iochroma and Acnistus ARE, in fact, now the same genus, but australis is a VERY different species from cyaneum or grandiflora, etc. just like B. sanguinea is very different from B. suaveolens, versicolor, etc.

I had no luck with the Acnistus seeds, and so far the three or four Iochroma cuttings I've managed to trade for have done absolutely nothing for me, even though they're planted in my new brug bed and have been getting the same TLC as the brugs---which are presently blooming beautifully. (Well, at least SOME of them are!) I've been telling myself that the Iochromas are busy making a nice big root system so they can stun me next summer. (Hush, I don't WANT to know any different!)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

HI Judith!!! Well you know you are first on my list and if they do not root for me , I will dig 2 up and root and top trim and off they will go to their new home!!! You deserve this plant even though I know you will not want it once you have it!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, kell, I've traded for cuttings, and Judith sent me seeds, and I've never had any luck either! Got a plant right after I got here at DG and it never bloomed and then died!!! so .... I'm begging here for whenever a cutting might be had, next spring, next summer.....

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Does Kartuz have a website? I'd love to have one of these in MY greenhouse. Thanks.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

yes they have a website-proably link in the gardenwatch dog.
I just put the name in my address bar and whala i was there and drooling!

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

I have the indigo and wine and they are still blooming to beat the band! Am trying to root some. Get roots in water, but when you try to transplant they wilt. So am using rooting hormone and so far they look very healthy.
Question: since they're so big there is no way they will fit in tiny greenhouse. Can I cut them way back before frost, then put the pot in greenhouse and try to winter over?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

sure tiG!!! You know I want to make you happy!

The one I really like is the purple bigger one. I got mine in a nursery in Occidental. I also saw purple skinny ones at nurseries here in the spring.
this is what they were labeled but I think my purple one is really Iochroma grandiflora from what I have read.

Iochroma Burgundy
Iochroma Indigo
Iochroma fuchsoides

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I just bought 2 blue's, fushia and a red Iochroma from Kartuz Greenhouse. I also have started the Arcnistus seeds and have a purple and white one growing in the garden now. I have been trying to root the purple Iochroma and the purple arcnistus. The Iochroma's are
still green after a couple weeks so I am really hoping that they take. The arcnistus isn't doing well by cuttings at all.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Another two cents' worth---from my reading, and from a few people I have talked with in CA, the Iochromas are supposed to be slightly more hardy than brugs are, and can be treated pretty much the same way as far as overwintering goes. It's a bit too late to try it now, Agapanthus, but next year I think I'd try putting it in the ground and doing it just like a brug---provided, of course, that we EVER figure out how to root the little buggers.
One person I talked with, the person who told me about the things to begin with, says she often has cuttings root in the compost pile! Unintentionally, of course---just where she's pruned hers and tossed the clippings. But since she already has every plant in the known Universe, I was unable to temp her into trading me any of them.

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

thanks MsBatt for the info.
