Iochroma Cyaneum or is it Iochroma grandiflora ???

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am growing 3 different colors this summer. They get quite big. After I get some cuttings to root for friends that want them, I am going to toss all but this purple one. The other 2 have such narrow little tubes, I do not find them appealing. I think the idea behind this one, is what they lack in bloom appearance they make up by the sheer number of them.

Maybe this is one of those "in the eye of the beholder" moments--but I love both the red and the blue. I have also had those love/hate plant days. If you have any cuttings I would "love" any.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

love that purple one!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I love that purple one too. Kell, that other flower just doesn't belong in your Pepto Garden. You're going to ruin your reputation. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Desert rose, I am in the process of rooting them so please email me in 1 month to remind me and if I succeed I would be happy to share with you for just postage.

LOL Snow, actually that one is fushia pink you are disparaging!
I also have a orangey one that had no fresh blooms today for a pic.

Dripping Springs, TX

Thanks Kell--I will email you.I will have beautiful flower dreams tonight because of Dave's Garden.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

well not of this one Desert Rose!

Kell, I love the Iochromas. They're gorgeous.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Do you grow them Jeanne?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Kell, both colors are very lovely :)!

Kell, i did post more site on the greenhouse forum for u.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I finally got my acnistus to bloom, several colors and they are definitely different from the iochromas. Kell, you have too much blue in that pepto garden, send them to me, lol.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Kell - do you know how to root them? I haven't had any luck.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Blue one is so beautiful wow, I love it never see this one before.

(Zone 7b)

now I'm confused.. I thought iochromas had been renamed to acnistus! Someone gave me some acnistus seeds and I'm growing them now.. wonder what they will actually be?

Kell, I can't find them anywhere around here. If you get any seeds, I'd love some.

The acnistis australis is definitely different from the Iochroma. I have purple and white acnistis.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

well only if you let them live in your conservatory Jeanne! LOL since I can't!!

They can definitely live in the conservatory. I could make a Kell Korner.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

be still my heart...............

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Well if Jeanne wants some - so do I!! So much for being an independent thinker. LOL - I'll call it Kellville.

(Zone 7b)

The seeds I got were labeled acnistis australis. What is this plant going to look like vs. iochroma? And why is Iochroma so hard to find? :( darn it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I got my Iochroma plants from Kartuz Greenhouse except for the red one and my friend Kell sent me that one as a surprise. It was really starting to bloom this fall late when it was too cool to even be outside to enjoy. Someone told me that the Iochroma do best if they have warm days and cool nights. Mine (blue and purple) did not give me much show at all. Even this fall. The red was definitely the best.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

that is because I sent you the best one Brugie........for the best friend LOL!!! Mine also started to bloom late in the season. I wonder if they like to be older to bloom. I got mine in gallon cans and now they are 5 feet. I saw one at a nursery that was about 16 feet tall. They are tall and sprawling. Let me find the picture I took to post and then never did..............

That's huge! I have mine in a 5 gallon crock. I wonder if you could train them into a standard?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Poppysue, that is a smart idea!!! That would make it much more palatable for the small yard. I can always fit another standard!! I will try that with the purple one. THANKS

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I'm training an acnistus to a standard. Some didn't cooperate, they are too crooked. Waterloolily sent me a big purple iochroma, and the leaves are similar as is the stem, not sure about the bloom habit though. Would it bloom right trained as a standard?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Cala, could you would you post a pic of an acnistus. I looked it up on google and it did look like my fatter purple. So I am confused! Again!

So when you say a big purple Iochroma from Waterloolily, do you mean the plant was big or were the flowers big? Being a flower floozy, I would love it if the flowers were big.

I would think a standard would work if you kept pruning to get lots of branches from the top for it seems to bloom on the branch ends. It may be a little weeping but that might be cool. All of mine put out a tall center stem and them tons of smaller sprawling ones.

Do you have yours in the Jungle House, Cala? I wonder how much cold they take. The huge one in my last picture is in a nursery in Berkeley and it has obviously been there for ages for it is huge. It stands next to a huge brug in their display area.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, if Jeanne and Liz want them, I want them too!!! I have warm days! (and cool nights right now, but ;)

Grandview, TX(Zone 7b)

Kell,
could I beg cuttings from them before you trash them? I'm with desert_rose, I think they are beautiful!

Kell, the plant was huge, the flowers are bigger than my acnistus, but then again, the acnistus is shaped different, more open. I looked at the insides of the acnistus, the stigma and anthers look like miniature brugs. The acnistus makes a strong central branch and lots of side branches. It doesn't have clusters(of blooms) like the iochroma. I'll try to remember to take a picture of the acnistus. It got mites earlier, then we had a 40*F night, made the leaves a little funny looking. I have white, pale pink and blue. The seeds were from T&M, supposed to be all blue.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, I sure hope I can root some for all of you!!! I have lots of plant material.........so I will give it my best! Judith, my first online brug friend is desperate for these for 2 years!! Why I keep asking her. LOL
Thanks Cala, I would love to see your plant.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Well get a move on Kell - time's a wasting. Don't worry about rooting for me - just send the whole plant.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

only if I can hand carry it to you Miss Lizzie!!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I'll leave a light on in the window Kell. I'll be waiting ~~

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

do I get my butler and cook?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Sure - as long as you don't mind that they both look like me.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

as long as you know how to cook and clean, I will feel right at home............. LOL
