My Plumosas are 3 years old. This one has bloomed twice now from heavy rain in late September. I grow in medium shade spring through summer and winter them in the greenhouse. Picture taken on 10/5/2002 zone 7 Atlanta, GA.

Hey there, I also have one of these plants & have kept it inside for the last few years. It is picky & doesn't appreciate being moved, but I am considering dividing it & planting a portion outside in a shaded flowerbed on my porch. I live in Dallas - do you think it will survive the hot summers (shaded) & cold winters? Also, any advice on *exactly* how to divide it would be useful. I have never undertaken such a division before. Plus, the thorns on the stems hurt!! Thanks!

I simply "hack" my ferns in half with trowel or shovel to divide. Plumosa ferns can take quite a bit of abuse, they can even stay outside year-round if temps don't fall below 32°F for prolonged periods. While they do enjoy shade, to much shade will keep them from blooming and from growing properly. I usually keep mine under a large Live Oak or under a flowering Cherry where they get light early in morning and late in afternoon.

As you can see by the detail in this pic, my Plumosas have absolutly no thorns. You may have a different variety of Asparagus Fern.
