How to kill a tree?? Oh My!!

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

I know it sounds terrible but I have a magnolia that I want to die. This is the problem it is sickly but the Mr refuses to have it cut down until it dies. I need the sun shine for other plants, how can I speed up the process?? I thought about pouring bleach around the trunk or vinigar any one got any ideas???

A few years ago I had the same dilema, I wanted a few trees dead. I girdled them with a chainsaw about 1 inch deep. The bark was only 1.4" deep and I was pretty sure that would kill them. The idea did not work. Next year, I removed about 3 ft. of bark all the way around the tree. You could see bare wood. This did not keep the tree immediately but it took another year before it died. I received a lot of explanations as to how that happenned, I was only happy when the tree died.

Spray Roundup on those tender new leaves in the late winter/early spring? Repeatedly shovel prune the roots? (I don't know if that would kill it, but it sure wouldn't make it very happy ;~)

Or...you could always learn how to run the chainsaw (I haven't yet, but I'm tempted every now and then.)
