Brugmansias: Biology 101

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hey Flit, your neighbors can grow these well in shade? I sure would like to know which varieties like the shade!

Welcome to DGs and join the addiction ~ lol!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Nice picture Scoot. Welcome Flit. Hope you catch the bug and chat with us daily over on the brug forum.

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you all!

I get the feeling I should be peeking into the Brug forum. :)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Great information here Calla. Thank you. Where are you anyway?

Barrie, Canada(Zone 5b)

My brugs are growing under lights in the basement and were doing great, until recently. It's not heated and gets cold down there. Will that make the leaves turn yellow and fall off?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

...........They could be going dormant if the light and temps are not sufficient.
...........Not to scare ya but did you check for spider mites or other critters?
............Also, if they are loosing their foliage, cut back on water some as they have nothing to use it for.

Good Luck,
....... §hirley

I have seed pods on my Brug. How long do they take to ripen? How do I know when they're ready to harvest? I don't want them to break open before I have the chance to collect them.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

deedee, usually the pod will start to get soft or yellow. It can take several months for a pod to ripen. If their still firm and brite green it's too early. Different species ripen at different rates.

I've found they don't really split open and drop seeds like so many other plants do. Even if they split they seem to retain the shape.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

WOW! I never knew there were SO many colors of Brugs.
I think I have been bitten by the brug bug! I have seeds I got in a swap. White (of course) & purple. I did just plant some & was unaware that they need to be soaked. I do still have some seeds of both so I'll soak them & start again. I have never actually seen one of these plants in person, only pictures. I live in zone 7 & I don't think anyone up here grows them. So I can't get cuttings. They are so beautiful, I can see why you'd want to collect more & more.
I have a green house so I might try my hand at it.

DeLand, FL(Zone 9b)

Thank you very much, poppysue, for your response to my question.

BjsBloomers, if your seed packets say purple, what you really have is datura. Brug seeds have a good sized amount of corky material covering the seed. Datura seed has no cover and is anywhere from pale beige to almost black in color.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Well, I planted both the types of seeds a couple of weeks ago & neither have sprouted, maybe I should be more patient? They are in my green hut keeping warm, so maybe they will do something. I just this, AM talked to a friend who is a gardener, in Houston, & she is pruning someones Brug. & said she would send me cuttings!!! Good thing I'm building a larger green house cause I would want to overwinter them in there. We have cold winters. The green hut I have now would be full with one in there.
Thank-x for the info. I'll keep studying!

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

The purple one has sprouted! Hurray! I hope the white one does also. I have been looking at all the wonderful colors & writing down names of the ones I'd like. Funny we don't see them here. The closest I have seen them to me is San Francisco. Although I'm going to Chico CA. today & I'll be checking some nurseries out tomorrow.
How large of a pot should i put this in when I transplant it? I have 5 sprouts I might try one just out in the garden.
Thank-x for any info.

What a wonderful thread!!! I'm afraid it will take more than one reading for me, whew. SherryLike

This is a great thread also for brug newbies.

Bouncing this up for newbies

Thanks so much Judy ! This was such a bad year for my Brugs. I feel like I let them down drastically, but I fed and watered and treated for pests as scheduled....so I dunno..just not a happy year. Few flowers, fewer pests and not nearly the growth of last year....sigh :)
God bless all, Margo

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Margo,

That seems to be the way things went for brug folks in a lot of areas this year .

Let's all hope it goes better next season ;-))

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Sheesh.. don't feel bad jlmmkm. All I did was water this year.. and that was usually only once they started to look droopy. No fert no bug spray.. They still bloomed for me :) but as you say they really didn't take off blooming until the last couple weeks.. figures a freeze would come..sigh

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

Please tell me if they will bloom in semi shade? I'm not sure my DH will let me plant them all over his grass which is in the sun.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

HIS grass ! ????

good grief Charley Brown

OK the less sun the fewer and smaller the blooms.

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

He mows and I don't. Never been on a riding lawn mower in my 68 years so its his grass and I'm not going to mow. We are cutting down a very large tree in February so I guess I will claim that as my area. It is real sunny. That works.

Fort McCoy, FL

I hope there won't be a test after this. Thanks for the lesson though.

Kamikid,

Just to let you know that I have a potted Brugmansia which I keep on the patio during the summer. It gets no more than about 2 to 3 hours sun in the afternoon. It still blooms fine, perhaps not so abundant as it might do if given a place in full sun, but I am happy with its performance each year.

Thats beautiful!!!! Do you take it in the house or the garage or something? If so do you cut it back? Where do I have room for one? That is the question.

Gent, Belgium(Zone 8a)

Cececoogan,
Thanks!

I take it inside the house during the winter and store it in an unheated attic room. The lowest temperature in that room during cold spells is around 8-10°C. There is light, but not sufficient to keep the plant healthy, so I cut back the foliage. Around March there are the first signs of new growth and by that time the light in the room also increasingly improves. At the time I can safely put it back on my patio, it has developed very healthy and abundant new growth.

I suppose you can also overwinter a Brugmansia in a dark and cool frost- free space (like in a garage) if you cut back the foliage.

In the past I have been overwintering it once inside the living and to my amazement it made a whole bunch of new flowerbuds, really a lot! Around 40 flowers it gave and all that in the middle of the month November when light levels are drastically getting low over here. The fragrance was overwhelming!

The only disadvantage was that my living is of a modest size and my Brugmansia not!

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

My garge has a couple of windows not alot of light but they are on the west. Its not heated but I do spend alot of time in the garage due to the fact my DH made me a gardening corner for all my plant books, fertilizers, insecticidies and what not my compost tumbler he put together in here and well its kinda heavy so this is where it stayed. I'd have room on the west side with the table to put one on. Or my living room. Course I've so many plants in there over the window you can't see the window just the light coming thru. Its a southern expsure and a quite large set of window.

I want a Brug. I've seen so many lovely ones on various threads. Another DG'er is sending me rooted cuttings of some this spring. I am so excited its alomost shameful. lol That really is beautiful. Thanks for sharing the pic.

bumping it up for Spring (Australia) and Fall newbies ...another big thanks to the dear lady who taught me how to cross brugs.
You are a Legend!

Gosh I posted on here in Nov? 2006? Wow so much has changed in that time for me. I was looking forward to some cuttings the following spring............. I now have 12 or is it 14? Can't remember now. They're becoming my favoritest. A lot of work to overwinter and such but...................Here's a couple from just this past week

I thought a trip back to the past would bring back memories for the pioneers who taught us so much and also inspire new fans to "have a go".
your Brugs are lovely!
Can anyone stop at one?

I don't think so ^_^

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

oh no I can't stop at one ever. I have promises of three cutting this fall one from 3 different ones and loving it...........
