Ants eating my veggie seeds!

(Zone 5a)

What to do?! I was thinking about putting out some of those ant traps, that way there's no nasty things in the soil in which my carrots are growing. Any other suggestions?

I was told to use a solution of 25/75 % alcohol to water for ants and any other critters on my plants. I dont know if that will help with seeds. I was told it does not hurt anything except the critters. Maybe someone here can comment on that.

Also, are the seeds in little containers or directly in the ground? If you can somehow draw a chalk line around the area and get rid of the ants on the inside then they will be ok. Ants will not cross a chalk line. Of course this wont work if they are sewn into the ground.

Also, I believe orange will kill them but not sure about this. I know I have had an organic orange solution before that was for killing ants. It worked wonderfully. It did not harm plants either. Check into that. Again, maybe someone here knows more about it of you can find more about it online.

Whatever you find out, please let us know what works for you.

Try some Nutra Sweet®. Ants love the stuff and it will totally kill a colony within 6 weeks. It's the only thing I will use that chemical for

Will Nutra Sweet kill fire ants? These are my problem in the yard and garden.

I dunno, give it a try. Put some aspertame on an fire ant trail and see if they eat it. If they do it should kill them.

I never knew that ants ate plant material. They are all over my shrubs etc. I honestly thought they were after the sticky secretion left by the aphids!!!

They sure feasted on my gerberas! They also eat the foliage off of the bud of peonies. We learned that from another post.

And yet Angel - someone on that same post said it was the ants that pollinated the plant to produce flowers - can't see it myself :-)

There is a sticky substance on the peony blossoms,

If the ants don't remove it, that blossom won't open..

This is the one plant that you need to let ants do their thing.
