Monika, I have mine planted in pots out in the yard. I am moving next month and will lift them out of the ground.
Can I store them in the garage in those pots just as they come out of the ground and are pruned, or do I have to plant them in a larger pot to store them.
Thanks, Patricia
Cutback of a alley tree
Patricia, you may store themin the garage like they come out of the ground unless the pots have holes in the side walls. Then you should place the pots into plastic bags otherwise air will dry out the soil and kill the roots.
Monika, thanks for all you help. You're the greatest. You have so much knowledge of Brugs and we appreciate your help so much. Ada
Thank you Ada!
You're more than welcome. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Great information on this thread.
Thanks for this very informative post..
I do have a question. Why are some of the Brugs referred to as Alley Trees? Have seen it posted that way a couple of times but don't know the meaning of it. Thanks.
It comes from the French word allee. If you've ever been to France they had an old way of lining private roads on both sides with identical, ramrod straight trees. Like an honor guard.
Brugs grown from seed if trained early will have a tall straight trunk like an allee tree. There are also other ways to get straight trunked trees.
Be back in a sec ~ going looking for Monika's alley trees.

Here known as Peter Excel
Brugie, do you have to get that at a garden center? Or special order it from somewhere??
Anna, the first time I ordered online. The next time I will order through Renee. She is just a short ways from Carlin Sales Corp. in Milwaukee. No shipping that way.
Brugie,Is that what you used last year?Your Brugs were amazing.
The last half of the summer I used Excel. I used almost a 26 pound bag of it, so it did get used quite a bit. Thanks Bob. I'm surprised the brugs lived with our heat and full sun last summer.
Monika, I think it still has Peters in small letters on the bag, but Scott bought the Peters company or something. Anyway..same product and a pretty good one.
I believe this is what Tracey uses on her brugs and she got lots of seedlings to bloom at 5 months.
Is this the one everyone was searching for after Tracey posted that thread. I never did find any ... time to go searching again.
http://store.yahoo.com/btgrowersupply/watsolfer.html Here is a place it can be ordered, but the shipping is very high. I think it cost me over $18 just for the shipping.
So is it the Miracle Grow Excel Brugie? It is on sale! Might help with shipping.
That is what I got Kell.
PS. That was the price I paid for it last summer.

Here, Peters Excel is available for hard water and for soft water, calcium is added.
Shipping was $25 to here. Guess I should shop around locally. Maybe some place will order it for me if they don't have it.
Sue, I'm going to check with my local greenhouse and see if they can get it cheaper for me. Worth a try anyway.
Sue, last time this came up I googled myself to Scotts website and I emailed them from there and asked where the closest dealer was. They responded promptly and even gave me their phone number of closest distributer and how to get it from them.
This was the email address of answering email.
Joan.Cloutier@Scotts.com
Tracey told me about where you can buy 25 lb bags of several different types of fertilizers
http://www.hummert.com/catalog.asp?C=65&SC=7
I don't know what the shipping is, though.
but which one is the one to order? There are all different ones
Okay, Tracey correct me if I am wrong, because I don't want to speak out of turn here, but I believe last year she was using the Peter's Excel 15-5-15 CAL-MAG one half part
http://www.hummert.com/catalog.asp?C=65&SC=7&P=1385
mixed with 21-5-20 ALL PURPOSE (same page) one part
Does that make sense?
Thought I would also bump this one. As much as I hate to think about cutting back the brugs soon, this will help to get blooms earlier next year.
Thank you for the information Monika!
I still have a question. When you say to trim the Y back to 6 nodes on each of the Y, what do you mean by nodes? Are those the little white nubbins, that if put into water, sprout roots?
Those would be where leaves come out of the stalks. Six of those on each stalk/branch.
Thank you for bumping this back up. I have missed this thread till now.
Monika, thank for sharing your knowledge. I met Jeanne the other day, and she spoke very highly of you. Jeanne's gardens are amazing, I was fortunate to get a few cuttings. Thanks Jeanne, great visit.
Linda in Victoria BC
Wow, Brugie, those would be some mighty big cuttings. I don't know if there's even 6 nodes above the Ys on mine. I want to take cuttings from both areas (above and below the Y)......
Monika (or anyone that knows the answer), what did you stake Carmencita with, in the first photo in this thread??? It appears to be something very long, skinny and green. I thought rebar is what I needed for trees, but I could get 4 feet or 10 feet, and bought 4 feet, but it's rusty, messy and I WILL use it, but I'd like something that looks a little better, like the long, skinny thing you used. I have seen something similar at Lowe's, but I'm not sure what I saw is long enough. TIA!!!!!
