I am posting on this site because I don't want "everyone" to see this. I work for a company (merchant) that accepts credit cards for workshop fees, etc. Earlier this year I had an "interesting" thing happen to me. I received a letter from the merchant services. They were denying a charge for $1200 from 5 months previous. This was for the charge that was done over the phone and I had documentation prooving it. They still denied it because the charger claimed she never made the charge. I then asked merchant service why they waited so long and they again said the woman denied making the charge. And here is the interesting part - if a person makes a charge over the internet or phone, that person can actually claim they didn't make the charge. That is, the only legal way for a merchant to make a charge to a card is if they physically "swipe" the card. I then said to merchant services - in other words, if people were to protest any phone or internet charges, they could do so and she said "that is correct". So what I am getting at here is not to cheat anyone but if you have not authorized a charge that was made via the internet or telephone, you do not have to pay it no matter what. Just submit a dispute form (located on the back of your statement). By the way, the woman who claimed she didn't make the charge was have a "dingy" attack. I called her about the charge and she had forgot about it and reauthorized the charge.
Info about credit cards
Thank you so very much for that information. Ever since people have started posting about credit card fraud, I've been very conscious of looking closely at my bills and really paying attention to what's there. I appreciate your taking the time to clarify issues related to Internet and phone sales.
Today I read from our newspaper that in future Visa will begin using an ID number when paying with CC in internet.. Or something. So it should be more secure in the future.
