Propagating brugmansia

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

I just broke a large piece of stem off of my favorite brugmansia by accident and I would like to know how to root this piece. In the past, both water and soil rooting attempts resulted in rotten cuttings. What am I doing wrong? THanks

is it woody or green?? cut it into 4-6" pieces. remove all but the tiniest new leaves at the top. place in barely damp good potting mix (I use soilless). place in the shade. ignore. don't let them totally dry out, but overwatering will kill them. have you visited our brug forum?? it's the busiest forum here most days and we'd love to have another. I'm in Newnan btw, we have a lot of Georgians here.

The piece is green. I followed your instructions and hope all goes well. It is a double, the first one I have ever had. Since you live so close to me, let me ask you what you do to your brugs in the winter? So far, I have brought some in and left some outside over the winter. I have been to the brug forum and I was amazed at all the interest and info there. I appreciate your help. Thanks again.

I bring mine into a greenroom. (lights and warmth) i'm going to let my tallest standards go dormant in December for 6 weeks. You can put them in a fairly dark place and water just enough to keep them alive (every 4-6 weeks or so) and then bring them out of dormancy in the spring. I have a lot that I put in the ground early this spring. I'll take a cutting of those and most should come back. I had two in pots last year that came back! you ought to come see me, I can set you up with a lot of cuttings.

I would love to visit with you and see all your plants. I am just amazed at all the varieties. How do you get the plants to get tree size like in the picture you have on the newsletter? Also, why did the white datura I had last year come back yellow this year? And do you consider brugs and daturas to be so similar that they are treated the same? Sorry for all the questions but they are such interesting plants. Thanks.

hi, sorry my computer has been down. please come on over to the brug forum. you'll find a books worth of info there. can't answer the dat question, but Tonny could. and I got my standards mostly from seeds, but cuttings will do it too, just have to plant them right. I do horizonal log cuttings when I want a tree. do a search in the brug forum for pictures and stuff on that, it's pretty old but would show in a search. You ought to come spend a day and go home with some!!
oh and the brug and dat question, I don't feed my datura, feed brugs heavy. I tread dats as an annual and brugs as a treasure that I'll do anything for in the winter:)
