We had the first frost last night here in my area. By our thermometer it was lowest in -0,7 C. My friend's Impatiens is half-dead, but nothing else was damaged in our yard except Oil Seed Pumpkin. Some of the leaves got frostbitten. And some of my indoor plants are still outside, but I put a veil on them. I think it helped. Now I have to go cleaning all the pots, change some soil so I can get them inside... ¦Þ
First frost
isn't that one of the saddest sites??? sorry it came so soon evert
Yeah... last week the daytemps were still in about 15-19 C and week before even over 20. This cold weather came suddenly :| I hate fall.
oh evert my heart breaks-i hate fall most of all! Its like death all around you-at least winter covers death up with a white blanket.
Last yr we had a killin frost late august! that stunk!
I hope its the only frost you get for a while yet-i have lots to do yet b4 we get hit here-keep watching the lows every week-next week is 46-48 so im still ok but chilled to the bone!
so sorry Evert,
I hope we still have a few days left before the frost. I have to haus some plants inside *LOL*
today we have 26 celcius, thats real warm for this time.
we had a few cold nights 7-8 celcius already, so it's near.
It was +1 C this morning when I went to school.... now it is 21:55 here and +4,5 C.
26°C in Ontario this time of year?! :O
The cold air from Finland will hit us by sunday, evert.
They expect the first snow in the higher mountain range where I live.
No, cold air from Norway and the North Pole, that's where it came from ;)
They got the first snow in the northest town of Finland, Utsjoki. Only a little, and it melted right away. Well, it surely means winter is coming, hahaha... |)
Evert I'm so sorry. We're at least 4-6 weeks from first frost, unless one sneaks in on us. After that, the daytime temperatures are still very comfortable for several weeks, usually into November and even December. It's what we call "Indian Summer" and I try to take full advantage of it, knowning that serious cold is just around the corner.
yep, it's amazing warm today.
DD goes to school with shorts.
but we are supposed to get thunderstorm tonight. and soon is full moon, so everything could change...
That's unfair. :| Well, at least we had the warmest August for 100 years. And a very nice summer. :)
Here is a pic of my indoor plants outside under the veil before I replanted them, cleaned the pots and "pot plates" + cut off dead leaves etc... Now they are all inside - except one plant, I didn't have enough soil for it. :} I took it to the garage window
Evert, I think we are going to get it tonight. I've been all afternoon picking the squash, the peppers, and some of the tomatoes, and digging the carrots and onions. It's very cold and windy today and they are talking mid 30's tonight. I'm going to cover the rest of the tomatoes until I either get sick of doing that or forget once. LOL!
Evert
Please keep your frosts to yourselves and don't send them south!
I don't want any frosts this side of November - I've still got squash and beans ripening and what about all that seed I'm waiting to collect.
What about my Hesperis seeds - nothing doing?
Unlike Notmartha I like autumn (fall); it's a changeover time, like spring and the trees are so beautiful. Everything is preparation for the coming in winter and there are new seasonal foods to enjoy. I love walking through the woods at this time of year. It's also the best time of year for mountain walking, before the snows come. I love it :-)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh
I just looked at the five day forecast and we have 5 at night next week and only 11 during the day - does that mean you're sending it south Evert?
Can I emigrate south?
Oh, but I love fall. The crispness of the air and the beauty of the autumn leaves. It's gorgeous. It makes me thankful for all the beauty I experienced in summer, too.
From the newsletter quote a few days ago:
"For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad."
I didn't like fall when I was younger; like notmartha, I associated it with the end of warm weather, and the onset (onslaught?) of a long, cold winter. Living in a warmer climate has allowed me to learn to enjoy fall and savor the beauty of the season, instead of looking at it as only a precursor to winter (which I still don't like, but at least here they don't last long!)
i just cant stand it-sorry but im a tropical and i luv the heat and the green and the life it gives off! Im a very seasonal person-my seasons are spring n summer. Fall is the worst and winter well i can stand it from inside the house!
So much to do in the fall i feel like a chipmunk scurrying around trying to beat that old guy Jack Frost-digging all the canna and others that need plucked from the earth.
*SIGH* wish i was twins-LOL
Im glad i still have a few days of warmth left! :-|
After death comes new life. Rebirth. Like the butterflies, we will await the Spring for the anticipated joys it brings us. (just my humble opinion)
I love the Fall season in upstate NY. The leaves are gorgeous, the weather crisp and refreshing, the golf courses are not crowded and off season rates apply and it signals that it is time to get ready to head SOUTH to Southwest FL for the winter!
Well, you people in south might enjoy fall but in North it is a little different. Winter is much colder and fal too. We can't enjoy it in way you do. We don't get much rain on fall tho, which is good..
Last week I read of newspaper that Finland is the driest country of EU. Even dried than Spain! I was pretty surprised.

I found the article from the newspaper website.. :D

we in the UK are enjoying our Indian summer. havent had much rain in weeks. Night temps down to 7c but no frosts as yet, probably another week or two yet.
Fascinating article Evert.
Switzerland isn't in the EU but would probably rank along with Austria as very rainy - a lot of the precipitation actually comes down as snow in winter. I know Switzerland has more rain than the UK and also, whenever we go to the UK, we have good weather with only occasional rain. I sometimes wonder if the Brits don't simply protest too much about their weather!
No night frosts here yet but we can expect a temperature drop this week and yesterday we heard three processions of cows coming down the mountain - they are taken up to Alpine pastures in spring and are then brought down, with great ringing of cow bells and flowers decorating the cows that gave most milk, in late September/early October, before the first snows in the mountains. We don't usually get snow down here until November or December.
It's defintitely autumn now and some of trees are rapidly changing colour. It's going to to look gorgeous soon and I hope we get some nice walking weather.
I wish that we woud get some snow, it is so black and dark in fall... Winter is nice because of all the snow. I couldn't spend a christmas without snow. My belgian friend said it was so hilarious when he once spent a xmas in Australia, people were singing jingle bells etc.. =)
Last year first snow came in December. And year before we only got some isolated snowings, and we got the "real" first snow on xmas eve, Dec 24th.
28 celcius today, thats real warm for the 22 of september.
8 C today. |P
11° top temperature today here, and very wet
54 and wet wet wet!
I must be happy, it isn't wet here! :D The article must be "based on a true story" hahaha :}
5°C here with thunder, lighting, rain and storm! Its supoosed to be better, from Tuesday on we can expect beautiful sun - with freezer temperatures! Northern Germany got a storm warning for tonight, we up here in our mountains will get our part too as usual.
Good night to all of you, its almost midnight.
We did get our first frost last night. I had picked a lot of the stuff out of the veggie garden before hand, and had covered some of the more important tomatoes. The brugs are coming in the house at night now, since they are so very close to blooming. This afternoon a neighbor friend came over and helped me clean out my veggie garden and she took lots of the tomatoes to her mom to make us salsa and such. (There were tons of tomatoes still on the vines.) I am still covering some of my heirlooms though as I want them to ripen on the vine if at all possible. She also took all the corn stalks to feed to her cows. Fall is definitely here and they are talking snow flurries any day now.
oh joan my friend-brrrrrrrrr No frost here yet-but it sure is cold now-42 right now and highs only to 60s. I dont think we have any snow in the forecast yet-thank heavens!
Fried green mators are yummy too!
warm wishes
dori
Not snow here neither, at least for 1,5 months..
That was an interesting article Evert.
Being Scottish, and having grown up for a while in the Highlands, and on the Isle of Skye, I'm used to water, and especially rain. We said that on the Isle of Skye it rains for 400 days per year, and since it's always coming down, hardly any of it evaporates, thus filling the Lochs, (Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, etc.), and rivers for our wonderful Scotch Salmon, and Trout.
I was surprised to hear that Finland was the driest country in the EU, and, not the UK as a whole, but Scotland MUST be the wettest.
Another interesting point which was made was that in winter it very rarely rained, well we have those spells here in Hamburg also, where it may not rain for 3 - 4 weeks in winter, and we've had winters here which were just bitterly cold (-20°C), and dry for longer periods.
The sun is shining in Hamburg today, and it is 14°C.
All the best
Wintermoor
Do you realise today is the autumn equinox?
We have snow on the mountain tops today and it's forecast to come down to below 1000 metres. We have drier, sunnier weather forecast for Wednesday but still cold. It's been max 9° C today (48°F) and I've brought all my poor tomatoes in to ripen indoors.
Gerddi
Is it?
We had 8°C (46.4°F) today, and 4°C (39.2°F) this morning when I left.
Wintermoor, isn't it bad for some plants when it is -20°C (-4°F) and no snow to cover the branches of some tender trees/shrubs etc?
Evert
To answer your question to Wintermoor
Yes, it is bad for some plants and that is why we grow tender ones in pots to bring under shelter when necessary. The sort of snow we have here, with -16° or more for weeks, tends to bury and freeze plants rather than protect them. I don't so much get fresh brussels sprouts in winter - I get frozen ones!
I've had to learn a whole new way of gardening since I came to live here.
Here they snow really protects plants :D We have so much of it.... But then there might be days when the temperatures go up to 0- +2 and snow starts to melt, and when it starts to get colder again everything icy and slippery.
Many times, the snow comes first (50 -75cm) and then the cold. Being buried under the snow protects my japanese Azaleas and other tender plants. The snap dragons survived the 95/96 winter with temperatures of -18°C. They were buried under a half meter of snow. In April, after a mild period, they started to grow, one night with -6°C froze them all.

Is Herbstein in the Alps?
No, gerddi, I live in one of the german Mittelgebirge, its named Vogelsberg. Fulda Valley parts the Vogelsberg from the Rhön and Thüringer Wald.
