Eclipse, we live a few miles as the crow flies from the Oak Ridge plants, wonder if that's what's doing it??? A train derailed yesterday and spilled a whole tanker car of sulfuric acid not far from here. I was worried about my brugs, but they seem fine, just a bit of eye stinging for a few hours.

Do they normally get all wrinkly on the bottom before they open? I noticed one of mine doing that and I thought it was dying, but now I see the same thing in Cala's picture.

peter's is usually kinda wrinkly before it blossoms, i've thought i was dying too, but then it was a beautiful thing! big, too!! how long have all of you known about my husband's, though??? i'd better stop working out of town!!! hahahaha!!!

Wow Cala, how did I miss this thread. This is really pink month!! I can't wait to see these bloom. But Brugie's is an unknown and yours is L'amour?? I would say I wish I had one also but my DH might have his feelings hurt!

they do get wrinkled. just my observation, but i think it happens as the corolla starts coming down into the calyx right before it blooms and tightens the top, or something like that:)

Okay, then I'm going to assume that it's getting ready to bloom, rather than dying. I'm new to brugs, and this one will be my very first blooms, so I'm sort of overprotective of them right now.
Joan, can you post a picture? Sorry, we get silly here sometimes.
OK- serious now. Cala is holding the calyx which has the corolla (the bloom) inside. With a healthy plant the calyx looks somewhat like this. Different species and crosses of species have different shapes of calyxes, but basically this is what they look like. The corolla (bloom) will break through the end of the calyx.
If you have any mite problems, the calyx will get leathery, assuming that you are dealing with the problem, you can nick end of the calyx to help the corolla emerge.
So sorry Joan. we didnot mean to ignore you. If you could post a pic it would really help. You can do it right here on this thread. I am sure you are so excited about your first blooms! You will feel the same after your 1000th!! What colors do you have? Lately the brug pictures posted are the brugs you dream about!
