Tropicals: Blue Sky Vine Blossom

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Canjunace I can send you some cuttings if you like - they seem to root fairly easily. I cut mine back a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had ruined it for this year that it wouldn't bloom anymore, then today I saw these four. A little more lavender that the earlier bloom. Tig gave me this one last year - she had rooted it from a leaf!!

Azalea I would love some, please email me.
Thanks

Azalea - would you have any additional cuttings left? I have admired these all year! *fingers crossed*

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I could put some in your brug box for you.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine bloomed and seemed really dark blue compare to those, maybe I should have taken a picture.......maybe it was my imagination....

I would be interested in a cutting if anyone is willing. I did have one a couple years ago and then my grandson had pulled it out of the pot and me not knowing about it till a couple days later and realized it was gone.
Please email me if anyone is willing to give up a cutting or 2. Thank you

Woooooooo hoooooooooooo, great tiG and Azalea

Azalea told me about this. You folks might get a laugh - it used to be that I'd show Doug a picture of a new plant that I was getting and he'd enthusiastically say: "wow, that's pretty" - that's not the case right now - his response yesterday turned into - "where do you think you are going to put that" -- hee hee, I don't know, I don't care and I love it! But, it's going to look great!

*happy dance and a big broad grin, eyes a twinklin'*

Thank you to both!!! (At least from me, if not Doug)

Oh that is just soooooooo breathtaking pretty - - does anyone have a cutting they could send me for SASE? I would be sooooo grateful.

CrestedChik -- There is a version with a darker bloom out now, or it could have just been darkened by the sun. Both these clusters seem to be shaded by leaves.

tiG -- You say you wish you had yours in the ground ... do you think they would be ok outside here in 7b?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it's said to be hardy here Rik. but it's too late to get them in the ground now. But come spring.....

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Great! I've heard they'll make monster root systems, but I didn't expect they'd survive here. So, they'll freeze to the ground and pop back up in the spring?

Is that also what bananas that are 'hardy' for 7b will do?

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

Well I have bad news. Azalea was so gracious to send me a nice box of cuttings for postage. I feel embarrassed to say that they have all died! (boo hoo - lying on the floor crying my eyes out!) - Well all but one ailing leaf. I can't figure out what went wrong. I was so careful to use sterile materials - a mix of sand, compost and perlite. Kept them damp and not wet, not in direct sun. I put them in my mini-greenhouse, misted them regularly. Maybe it wasn't the right time of the year? Maybe they needed to be "stuck" in the dirt ASAP and didn't like the 2 day lag of priority mail? Maybe I have a black thumb for cuttings? I am so disappointed by this. :(
Maybe I will have a to buy a plant from someone already rooted.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Alyssum, I am sooo sorry you didn't have good luck, I have done the same thing with some things I really wanted. Cheer up, it will be spring again before we know it. Remind me again then and I will try to have some rooted cuttings for you. Mine is all frosted now except one that I do have rooted in the gH. I hope the one I left outside will return, but won't know for a few months.

Cortlandt Manor, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Azalea - - you are too kind! I will definitely remind you about that - maybe around March some time. On a happier note, I do have my brugs cuttings to console me - - they are actually doing great.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Alyssum -- Do you have brug cuttings to share? I am very excited about finding new kinds and I could easily root you a Blue Sky Vine this winter (special technique, I'll tell you about later -- works best in fall and winter).

I planted mine in September of 2003, I had so many blooms that it almost became a nuisance, I have a serenity garden on the side of my house and my arbor is totally covered, rain doesnt have chance to pass through it, we feed it regular, will have to see the name of the nutrient and post it later, it is absolutely increadible, I can not bare the thought that it is a perennial, cant see mine ever dying? this forum is great...live in Hollywood, Florida

Glad someone resureccted this old thread - I had just posted a request for some cuttings or seeds or something to get mine started again - the blooms are so exquisite. I tried to root some over the winter but sadly lost them.

I am now on the requesting end of this thing again this year! I gave away lots of cuttings last fall, maybe one of those folk's will have one to return to me!!

I guess I better go post a wish list!!! I saw one of these vines in a picture a few years ago & have been looking for them ever since. I don't know any other name for them except Blue Sky vine. Couldn't find them in my plant books. I think they are beautiful, & Vines are one of my passions.

Clock Vine is another common name. Hope you find them.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Me Too. They are such a beautiful blue. I didn't know they could be propagated so easily. I'll be on the look out for those!
Anyone know what type of tulip this is? It is from a box of cheapies. I'd like to get more of them.
Happy Spring! Bj

Thunbergia grandiflora
Here in S Texas it is called Blue Sky Flower vine & also comes in white.
Ck Antique Rose Emporium's website, then go to Coming Events. They have a great pix of it with a rose.
:~)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey y'all. I too saw these at TX RenFest and fell in love with them. I bought 3 small thunbergia grandiflora plants in the spring, planted them next to a trellis, and they've just gone crazy. They're topped the trellis and are now trying to climb my roof. But no blooms yet--do they bloom in the first year? Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

It should be bloom time for them - that's the discouraging part here - they will bloom til the frost gets them. Maybe it is tropical enough in Houston that they will not get nipped. I lost mine the only year I had one, It was so pretty for a short time and it froze out in the winter. I tried unsucessfully to root cuttings and I got no seeds. Would love to have another next year.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the info. I checked this morning, and there seem to be some pod type things on the ends of some of the new growth. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I'd be happy to send you some cuttings if you like.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

That's very sweet of you Corky! I will send you postage or a trade. Look for DM.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Woo hoo, I finally have blooms!!!

Oh, I wonder if this vine could grow this in a pot? In the southeast corner of Iowa, don't see how this sweet vine would last. But, considering its name and beauty, I'd love to have it growing here.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

I over wintered mine in a pot outside. It died back to the ground but it came back and has almost filled the trellis I have it against. Alas, I haven't had any flowers this year though.

Fairfield, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Jeri11, If I can get a cutting, perhaps I'll try it in a pot that can move inside for the winter.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Hello Everyone,

My blue sky vine had one bloom yesterday. Maybe there is hope yet.

Jeri

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Mine has had at least four blooms at a time on it since July, and many buds yet to mature - it is a gorgeous vine.
