Has anyone had frost yet? My window boxes and tender annuals all froze Saturday night (Oct. 7). That's always a turning point in a gardener's life. Not necessary sad, just a change.
When does everyone have their first frost?
I awoke this morning in Atlanta to find a very thin light frost covering everything. I'm not sure if it was truly a frost, but it looked and felt like it. The weatherman on TV was calling for a frost here over the weekend...
I actually thought we'd go longer without frost here. In Texas we often waited until December to get frost.
We have been having frost for a week or two here, but we finally got a pretty hard frost here the day before yesterday. My bachelor buttons is one of the few plants that is standing up to the frost.
I heard on the news tonight that today in Atlanta was the record low for this date since 85 years ago!
Had the first frost, a light one, about two weeks ago, September 20 something. Had a much harder frost (13 degrees)last week and average frost (28-30 degrees) every morning since. I spent saturday planting 150 bulbs, narcissus and scilla - my arms are sore. Also I divided dahlias for the first time. So, I was actually anticipating the frost. Now that I have that overwith, I'm ready for spring :)
I heard on the radio this morning that Tampa broke record low last night set back 58 years ago.
This is the season for saddness I believe, I hate fall and winter just because of the cold!!!! We had our first frost in Jersey last weekend. Must not have been a hard one because everything is still alive and kickin'!!
Just dug all my cannas and glads up today.
Kim
I see the problem, Kimy. You live too far north. Here in east Tennessee, we have 3 months for each season. I grew up in Wisconsin (the only seasons were winter and July), lived in Texas for 5 years (... summer and January), and now I enjoy all the seasons equally. Just too cool!!
I would love that. I live up here in the north and really dislike the cold.. I loved playing in the snow when I was a kid, but now that I have to drive in the stuff to get to work, I don't like it so much. I think it would be beautiful to have all the trees that change color in the fall, have a short mild winter to get the plants ready for the next growing season, have a spring where everything starts poking it's way up through the ground that smells so rich, and a summer that isn't too unbearably hot (with all the beautiful flowers and birds). Any place like this?
Come on down to Tennessee. You and Kimy pack your bags before you get snowed under!
Wow, I didn't know we had someone from Ireland here! How fun!
We had frost the last couple weeks of September. I work as a gardener (on grounds and in a greenhouse) locally and had to start covering some of the outside plants just to help them last a little longer. At this point, everything is pretty much dead, and almost all our trees are bare. YIKES! Where did my summer go???
Well, parts of MD have had frost but fortunately for us we live right on the bay and rarely get frost till mid November. Although it has been cooler this fall than most, hope we don't get one sooner. :)
You just discribed the pacific north west! But we do get alot of rain too! :-)
The situation in the Netherlands is rain, rain and more rain! But no frost yet, althoug the night temperatures are dropping pretty fast, about 5C or 41 F. I've wrapped up my greenhouse in bubble wrap last weekend, so when the dreaded frost comes I'm prepared (I hope anyway!).
I'll keep you posted!
Agnes
here in mid michigan we had a early frost in september then warmth and then we had 4 days of hard frost! i watched the balsam impatients and the canas wilt with each night. it doesnt look like a warm up again till MARCH- the high this saturday will be 48.(YUCK)i will be looking at the garden from the window and starting plants inside. going to keep some morning glories growing indoors this winter..and more!
HAPPY HOLIDAYZ
dori
Hi again! It has been raining for a week or so on and off. It rained hard all day yesterday and turned to snow in the middle of the night. Now we have icy roads (YUCK!) and high winds (single digit wind chill). I can't complain too much though because Rise Ann has gotten dumped on (snow-lots of snow) a couple of times according to our weatherman.
I wish it would rain here in Florida, been over 5 weeks since the last time it rained. I heard there is a 20% chance of showering on Friday. WoooHoo!
rain rain rain here in Atlanta. It started raining yesterday afternoon and hasn't stopped yet.
It's mostly a slow drizel, occasionally picking up for a few minutes, then back to drizel. Regardless, at least moisture is falling after about 2 months of /NO/ rain.
I live in Ohio, and we had our first frost the last of September, I too hate the cold winters, I am a born leo and simply freeze during the winter months, can't wait until Spring!!!
Our frost came in September too. As much as I hate the cold I need the break that winter gives us. I depend on the time to recoup...regroup...re-think...and re-plan. It's almost a relief when the frost hits. I can't imagine gardening year round. Spring just wouldn't be the same if it didn't follow the months of cold and snow. I suppose if you were to ask me at the end of March ~ I'll probably be singing a different tune.
