Jcf: The seeds would be in the plumes. Maybe your seeds are not mature enough to see yet.

how old do they have to be to make seed

jcf: If they are making plumes, then they would have seeds in the plumes. I was told to wait until you could pull some of the plume off into your hand easily, or when you see some of the fluff flying off the plumes. Maybe someone else has more insight into this.

jcf,
I have had the same problem with my pampas grass. I have pulled the plumes off several times late this summer and none of the seeds have germinated. So I am going to try again as the plumes turn darker. By the way, where is Brooklet? I live in Dacula.

I haven't grown Pampas grass successfully (slightly too cold here to survive winters well) but I have read often that they are male/female plants. Most of the ones sold are male plants that do not set seeds. Might be worth checking into further? I will get a couple of reference books at the library tomorrow and check.

I checked earlier, and according to Steve Bender, author of Passalong Plants, the Pampas Grass is either male or female flowering. The female ones are bigger and showier blooms; if there is no male clump close by, they will not set seed.

Hope this helps.
