WalMart had all their "perennials-in-a-box" marked down on clearance today. They had lots of Dicentra/Bleeding Heart; Cannas, Dahlias, Gladiolas; Baby's Breath, Montbretia, Clematis, etc. Everything was marked 1/3-1/2 off. (And the prices on boxed plants are usually much cheaper than container grown plants, even before discounting them.)
I'm sure a lot of the big discount/home improvement stores will start marking down their spring and early summer items pretty soon - this is a good way to get some bargains to fill in those bare spots, especially with caladiums and glads, which will still bloom in most parts of the country if planted now.
If your weather is too hot for some of these spring-flowering perennials, consider starting them in pots in a protected, shady area, and planting them out this fall when things cool down a bit. With a little advance planning, you can have some beautiful plants next spring, at a great price!
Start checking the Clearance Racks
I got some bulbs from Wal-Mart the other day on clearance. The bulbs that were $3.xx were marked down to $1.00 and some were a bit higher but the prices were similar. Just make sure the bulbs ore rhizomes are firm. Some of them were falling apart.
I bought some dahlias and love them! They were something like $2 a box of 2 or 4.
I got 6 ferns from there yesterday for 4.50 that were almost $10. I can't wait to plant them.

MzMunchken...It sounds like you talked to bad manager or a wanna be. If you had a receipt where you paid full/reduced how can they dispute that and why are other stores of the same chain different in their policies and procedures? I used to work retail and employee theft has been documented to be higher than that of the public. I have a feeling that there are some dumpster divers with beautiful flowers/plants in their landscape. Once they are placed in the dumpster they are written off. I'd send an email curiously asking why is your store different from all the others. Good luck. Carol
I agree with Carol; if I don't have a receipt, I don't expect to be refunded the full purchase price if it's now on sale....and that's the way my local WalMart has always handled refunds, to the best of my knowledge.
P.S. - if what you were told is true, I'd be scoping out the dumpsters in bright and early, especially on Mondays, to see what I might find!
Unfortunately Wal-Mart uses secured dumpsters but seriously... they only refund current price without a reciept so when you decide to write that letter send a copy to the district manager and regional manager too. Be sure to put a 'cc' at the bottom so they know you are doing it. Maybe that will get a reaction.

The wallyworlds down here went through the clearance back in mid March.
I went to Wally-World today hoping to find some marked down plants, but it hasn't happened in this area yet. Somebody moved the hosta's to a shady spot, so no deals yet there either. :o(
Go_Vols...I wished you lived nearby. I know I can get in the dumpster, but I may need some help getting out! LOL
Carol, I can guarantee you that Go Vols would have the situation figured out in just a few min. This gal is "Little Miss Fix It". Nothing stops her for very long. I have been considering trying to adopt her but don't figure her parents would like that too much. ha!
Have you ever the piles of plants, dumped on each other, at Wal-mart? I came across these one day, realized they were being discarded, noticed the pots were nice.
Yeah, I asked for a few! The plants probably could have been saved, but I was mainly interested in the nice oval, terracotta pots.
Nope! Not allowed to let people take them, they must be destroyed. Does this make sense? Some things just leave you scratching your head!!
To early here for mark downs-we are just getting the plants set out at the wal-mart here! *sigh*
I bought some climbing Iceberg roses for $6.97 - couldn't believe my luck and they are so healthy looking.
We popped into Sam's Club to get DH a card (gas is about $.16/gallon cheaper at Sam's with a membership card than anywhere else.)
They had their perennials in a box marked down to $5.99 each. I picked up boxes of 8 Dicentra spectabilis, 8 Platycodon, 8 "Eenie Meenie" daylilies, and 30 Crocosmias for $24 total. They had plenty of hostas, anemones, daylilies, cannas, and lilies and other things even after I got through pawing through the racks.
Well, I just went to a super wal-mart and they didnt have any clearance but for a change not everything was dead. They had an assortment of fushias that most were dead but I managed to find two different ones that looked pretty healthy and not compleatly bloomed out. They also had some very nice New Guinea impatiens. I bought one and a healthy Mexican heather. I am putting them all in a pot together on my front porch that is pretty sheltered. I also got two miniature named (although I am not so sure I trust their names to be correct) roses. I had to pick through them but these two were very healthy and a nice size for $3 each. Well I am off to do some repotting and planting. It is really cool here and has been raining a little bit at least every other day so the conditions are wonderful for planting.
Have a fun and safe holiday weekend. Blessings! Angel
Hi Went to Lowes in Uniontown PA today and came home with 14 hosta sieboldiana=13 bonanza lillies=12 pink lace lillies=16 aureo marginata hosta on top o f the 39 hyacinyhia hosta and 15 bonanza along with 6 primula and 2 gerberas I bought yesteray. The total bill was 20 dollars. All had good root systems and were sprouting in the bags. Two months ago I stopped in Lowes in another town in Md and there were houseplants (aphelandras( marked to ten cents apeice along with many others. I left with three full carts full of markedown plants some six feet high and al in decent condition for 80 dollars. Palms included. Right place at the right time. Also at Lowes todqay were bags of nicce size glads mixed for 2 dollars for 60 corms.
Last year, our Osco drug store (owned by American stores) had a plant tent set up out in the parking lot earlier in the spring as there was no room in the store for all the plants. Around mid june, the plants were marked down to half price. July 2nd or 3rd, there was a sign outside the tent saying FREE plants. Take all you want! A lot of them were leggy but I filled up my trunk. Went back the next day, but the workmen were already taking the tent down and the remaining plants in the dumpster. So this year I am going to keep an eye on that place! Doris
My husband bought me a Tropicana Rose Bush at Lowe's for $5.95 that was discounted. It had very nice large stalks and about 8 buds starting to open. Is there a rose that gives more? Even the fading blooms still smell great!
Marclay, what a deal! I am so jealous!
wow i just love to get a great deal too. nothing yet for me here in massachusetts, but i always keep my eyes open and my ears tuned to "clearance". my dh says hes going to ask websters dictionary to change that word and not tell me. :-) but i'd know, it's in the blood. :-) actually he loves that i'm a bargain shopper.

Hi Went back today and got 800 yes you read right hosta (4 different kinds and 4 different kinds of daylillie-happened to overhears the man say they were going to have to do something about them. I also got 160 jiffy pota with the pellets inside and 3 mini geenhouses with 32 pellets ready to go al for 50 dollars. Gave a lot away already and before you say is this woman crazy==I was having a neighbor farmer plow and harrow me a good sized bed this week to work on over the next two or three years-these are rooted sprouting starts and they will go in ths large bed much closer together then one would think of planting to get a little growth this year and next year I will have plenty of planting out=trading-giving away material to work with as well as plenty of cover for any of my acre and a half. Another friend gave me a ton and a half of very old rotted sawdust and the local concrete man told me to come get a pickup load of sand for five dollars so it will be some good soil Ill have when I get through. Bargain day again.
I hit the clearance at Wal-Mart (I was a little late - there wasn't much left) But for $5 I got 3 bleeding hearts, 4 Dahlias and 1 Astible. Looks like I need to go to Lowes next. Julie
i hit the jackpot tonight at HomeDepot. I got 30 bags of Anemones (30 bulbs per bag) and 10 bags of Acidanthera) 30 bulbs per bag). each were 25 cents. yes that's 40 bags of bulbs,1200 bulbs for $10.00. YES!!!!! :-) that's less than 1 cent each. unfortunately i got there too late for the daylilies, cannas, and more that were in that display case too. So massachusetts is starting to discount and i'm a happy gardener. :-)
question. The bags are marked Peacock Orchid, Acidanthera Murielae. I looked this up on a bulb site for more info and they had the name Abyssinian Gladiolus. It is the same flower. white with a mahogany center. What's with the 2 different names?

Debi - Yep, they're the same thing. That's why botanical names are so important. Kinda like sweet william or phlox or pinks...there are so many kinds and the names vary across the country (and the world!). You'll love these little flowers...They will reward you in late summer with the most wonderfully sweet-smelling blooms. I love them!

I work in the Seasonal Department at Lowes and we are always marking plants down to half price. Some of our customers don't realize that they are still good plants that just need a little T.L.C. They see a little yellowing or wilt and they don't want it at all. I have really expanded my flower bed with lots of half pricers. We also mark down "bagged goods" like potting soil, mulch, fertilizers, etc...50% off. Ask around when you're there, they are always willing to get it off their hands. We don't make any money on these items, but to see my customers walk away happy is all that matters.
Susan I always get excellent markdown bargains at our local Lowes but never seem to see much t the competition her which is walmart and kmart. Both have big garden centers and are n the same mall.s Yes the plants I buy may be wilted or yellowing or have already bloomed and be priced at 10 cents but a little care brings them back. Good for the people at Lowes
Oh man...payday is tomorrow.
Guess I *have* to hit the clearance racks for bulbs and such. Better not take hubby tho...he is actually worse than I am! rofl

Freebies today. I went to visit my daughter and happened to glance alongside the interstate and thought I saw hanging baskets lying alongside the road. I hit the next exit and came back and sure enough there were three good size aloe vera plants on the berm. Out in the country-no houses around and at least six feet off the berm so they couldent have fallen from someones vehicle. In fact one was a hanging basket and one a ceramic pot-none broken and plants intact????
Wow- Marclay, what a find !! Congrats.
