Black Wiegela is green

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

I purchased a Black Wiegela at a farm store which is growing like nuts. The only problem is that now it's green and kind of uninteresting. Anyone know anything about these plants? I now feel that my 'stunning little shrub' is just taking up space.....

Help!

I have one too. It is 'Wine and Roses'. It doesn't look very good, and hasn't all season. I have never seen it flower. It was mauled by the deer last year and also probably underwatered, so I moved it in a shadier part, but it hasn't improved much. Maybe it is just slow. I have room, so I'll give it another season to look good before it makes it to the compost pile.

Tina, I have what is supposed to be a purple smokebush that is sort of smokey green. I recently consulted my local guru, who insisted that somehow, sometime, it died above the graft and reverted to the rootstock. Checking it, it appears to be growing from above the graft area, but he may be right that the growth is from the rootstock anyway.

When I got it 3 years ago, I didn't know much about gardening... certainly not enough to check the graft. For all I remember, it may have been this color then and some clerk may have told me it was just the time of the season! The current color would indicate the problem goes back before my ownership, since I didn't buy it bareroot. Last year I noticed it was greenish and thought it wasn't getting enough sun and moved it. Full sun now, same color. Guess I "got took"!!! Sigh.

In my area (hot summer) the purple smoke bush turns greenish in the heat of summer, then spectacular fall color. In spring until about August is is a dark smoky color, darkest in the beginning of spring.

From the sounds of it- no one's having any luck keeping the plants purple. I will check the graft and I will also look forward to fall and spring to see what happens with the color.

Thanks!
